A Diamond in the Rough

The sun shines bright over the three young men as they enter the small shop. They step in, walk up to the counter, and raise their guns for the hit. They've done this before. They do this everyday. This is their living. However, this one seemed different. Something didn't feel right with Zishla. Just before entering, he spoke with his "associates" about his feelings hitting up this shop, and they just brushed it off. Perhaps this was just a bad day? Feeling sick? This was their territory, no one was going to mess up the hit for them. So, Zishla brushed it off, and continued the robbery.

Grio: Let's go punk, hand over the cash in the register. You didn't pay up yesterday, or the day before, so we're TAKING IT.

Grio places his gun firmly against the cashier's forehead. Zishla walks around behind the shop and looks around. He finds a small, bright silver box in one of the corner across from him. He walks over, opens the box, to find the largest diamond he had ever seen. It completely filled the box. Zishla quickly placed the diamond in his pocket and walked back out to see his 2 buddies on the ground. He sees the cashier coming towards him and shoots him. He quickly sprints out the front door as 2 thugs from the back room start to chase him. He gets to the car, jumps in, and drives off.

Zishla: Fucking hell. I knew it wouldn't be a good hit. Now they're both dead. Shit.

As he drives, he looks down his pocket, and rubs his hand against the diamond. He shoves it back down into his pocket, rests his head against the seat, and thinks to himself what he should do. He thinks back to when his father got him into the business, and when his father was killed. He thinks about his first hit, his first block of territory, his first donation. He runs everything that has ever happened in this organized crime life through his mind, and comes out to one question. Why do we protect the family? He says the question out loud to himself, then another memory of his father returns to him.

"True and honest protection can only happen when you believe what you're protecting has precedence over your own life."

So, now that you've heard my story, Why do you protect your family?

Mane gives a chuckle as he contemplates the thoughts flooding through his head in response to this.

At first, the answer seemed glaringly obvious and I sarcastically thought, "Maybe because they're my family?" but having stopped thinking along those lines I gave it a few minutes to come up with a variety of answers.

The first one will be what I've already brought up - simply because they are my family. What more is needed? The way I was brought up, the socialisation that took place taught me that family comes first, before anything else including yourself. But aside from how I was brought up with my priorities laid out like this for me already, I came up with another answer.

Mane plays with his Clan OMalley pin idly and pauses before he elaborates on his next point.

I remember when my rank was lower, when I was a Thug, Gangster and Goomba up 'til now, and I asked myself what kept me alive then? It was my family. The fact that Bi-Polar_Bear took me into Clan OMalley and I had this tag attached to me. My family's protection kept me alive up to now. I owe my family any protection I can afford them, including my life. Had the Bear not given me an opportunity in his family, then I wouldn't be talking to you now. I'd be swimming with the fishes. So I already owe him my life for that favour he offered me.

Smiling, Mane nods at Zishla and moves away from the soapbox.

It so just happened that as Zishla asked himself this question out loud, he had just stopped at a street corner where Oops had been frequenting for the happy hour specials at a popular bar

Interesting question Zish. Many in my eyes don't do enough for their families. Sadly, times of war tend to show their true colors. I have heard that "If I donate enough to my boss or do enough crimes and rake in a lump some of earnings for the family - My promotion will be in the bag"

Yes it is rather sad that many are in it for themselves. But there are many out there that would die and their children would take the same fate in striving for the betterment of the family.

Everybody has their own jobs within their family structures and the scheme of things.

My bloodline have made the mistakes of being in it for themselves. But before I'm judged for that comment let me explain why. You see, my great great great grand daddy fought for what he believed, fought for his family, a real hard worker. He was killed along with his associates in a time of war. A complete wipe. The next generations that came still kept in contact with the generations of his associates until it seemed that everything had dissolved around them. No contacts, no one to trust and sadly enough - they lost themselves.

I have established a few meetings with some, that had been linked through their bloodlines with my own and to be honest, knowing that you are not alone makes a world of a difference. And thats the point in having a family. To be surrounded by people you can count on and more importantly, you can be counted on.

I have no trouble in following my orders through to the letter. I trust my boss, her RHM and the rest of the crew "with my life" though my life is not the bigger picture, its the lives of those who need to stick around to ensure that things keep on going.

Should anything happen to me in any event, instructions have been left to my son to follow religiously.

Oops glances back at the bar to see if had opened already

Gotta run Zish.

As he heads towards the door, he stops for a moment and looks back

Just remember, when a crew becomes a family - everybody becomes a shield for each another.
