Chapter 1:Another day, another idiot "I told you to wear the other shoes!" my mom hissed at me. "There is nothing wrong with my shoes!" I snapped as I got out of her SUV. Point at anything thing and assure you that my mom would find a way to argue about it. If a car was blue my mom would say it was orange to her. But my mom was only this way with me. My brother, Darris, was perfect my mom just gave up on and my sister, Victoria. Throughout the entire campus the sound of my heels bounced off the walls. Thousands of eyes fell onto me as I past the main building. I wasn't hated and I wasn't the most liked person in school, I was the goth chick who was gorgeous but was extremely nice. I lived in Washington with my mom or my godfather depending on the day. Luckily they lived in the same small town. I snapped out of my train of thought and saw one my best friends, Rita. She was like those little dogs that never shut up when you pissed them off. Even though she nagged about anything and every thing, we had gotten used to it. Her long black hair passed her shoulders leaving her bangs behind to cover her right eye. With a proud smile Rita towered over most of her group. The layers of black she wore made the world around her that much brighter. Rita had a unhealthy obsession with Hello Kitty. Like today, Rita and I often walked around the campus venting our feelings to each other. Now the February air clung to our skin creating goose bumps along our arms. Rain also poured in bucket loads over us. Of course this only added to our chronic whining. I learned to deal with the rain except when it came to the smell of wet dog. I peered at the fuzzy numbers on a nearby wall clock. " 7:20 . Rita, its almost time for class to start so I'm gonna head down to the pool." We exchanged hugs and set off for first period. I was a life guard for an hour which basically meant I could sit on my butt while 8th graders splashed around. My heels splashed in the puddles lining the steps. Swishing of rain zipped past my ear and a quick motion making the space around me so much clearer sound wise. I was out of the way of traffic now off in space letting my inter monolog run on and on. And along came Margarita. She popped up like a hyper daisy, " How are you Raven?" "Damn it Margarita! Don't do that!", heart attack was a complete understatement of what I felt. Forcibly I restrained myself form strangling her into a pulp. She laughed," No need to freak." The second tallest and second smartest, Margarita was two grades behind the rest of us so I was the only one who saw her on a regular basis. She had a strong German structure she even was brown as toast. Her chocolate brown hair and caramel colored eyes could have put her on the menu at dairy queen. Her curves were a little shocking for her age but when you took a look at her she looked perfect just the way she was. Margarita was like my little sister who looked absolutely nothing like me. We passed into the muggy girls locker room with our noses wrinkled. Oder, perfume, and burnt hair were the smells that line the sad excuse for a locker room. The floor was squishy and the locker hung on the rust they had gotten from being so close to the pool. We stripped down, got dressed and headed down to the pool deck. Girls and guys a like separated into two teams for battle of the sexes water polo style. I was perched on top of the lifeguard tower when the whistle was blown and the 8th graders went after the ball like fish after fish food. Girls were losing and none of the guys were getting hurt so I lost interest. I tried to stop myself from falling asleep but between the warmness and my loss of sleep last night, I just could help myself. A while passed until a polo ball slammed my face. I blew my whistle, "Fowl! Flow!" "You plan on staying up there all day?" Margarita's words were thrown as hard as she threw the ball. Scrambling down the tower wasn't enough to get me to Mr. Lewiston's geography class on time. "Damn it!" I yelled luckily the bell had rung just as I said it. My fishnet leggings were not put on right and my heels were hardly on my feet. Rita was almost crying in laughter by the time I had wobbled to my desk. "You sure know how to make an entrance!" she howled. I gave her a little devilish smile. As soon as Mr. Lewiston turned his back to explain Hawaii's vegetation I took my heel off, hit Rita in the back of the head, and put my heel back on. "What the hell?" she lowly hissed at me. I sweet victory I simply replied. "You had it coming." Rita raised her voice, "Bull shi..." Mr. Lewiston's bass voice boomed, "Miss Tewayo!" "What!?" "Why is the pineapple the most important crop in Hawaii?" "Cause the government is too lazy to import it?" His years of teaching classes had not prepared him for Rita's smart ass attitude. We could tell because his face looked like a grape until the thunderous bell broke the silence and dismissed us to 3rd period. I flew down the hall to Mrs. Scheorch's English class. I felt it much easier to get to my desk now that I was properly. On the blackboard a super long paragraph about a story we had just read. The paragraph had many false statement that we had to fix. I grabbed my pen and a blank sheet of paper. My phone vibrated in my trench coat pocket. This was weird I never got a text during school hours unless it was important. When I touched my phone I knew exactly who it was. My boss, Vulcan. Vulcan was a rich software designer who had been a good friend of my fathers. When my father died Vulcan became my Godfather. He was part of a secret organization of vampire slayers called the Royal Mejah. I became Vulcan's apprentice at a very young age. Now he was getting old and I took his assignments. Often I was given a level 5 Mission which was the highest rank of any mission. I finally got my phone out and a text message was waiting for me. Raven, I'm pleased to announce that the high council said that you may take a seven day action. There has not been any vampire actually in three weeks thanks to you. Have a great vacation. Vulcan A whole week without vampire hunting! What would I do? I didn't exactly have a normal teenage social life. I sat back slumping into my choir. Mrs. Scheorch looked at me from her desk. After I had finished the paragraph I shoved into my backpack full of my things. The roaring bell sounded and it couldn't have come at a better time. We all scrambled off to lunch like a pack of wolves. Harper, my best friend, and Ryden, my rival, were talking when I reached the top of the stairs. I exhaled trying to control myself. How could the person I enjoyed being with the most be buddies with the person I hated the most? Not to mention they were completely different. Harper was about 5' 3" and had short, spiky, red hair like some of those British models on TV. Her eyes seemed to be that of a navy seal's but after spending a few moments with her you would see the crazy, hyper person who made our day brighter. Ryden was the spiting image of a gothic goddess. Not a single hair was out of place. It was a short and black style. Two perfect emeralds lay in her eye sockets with big pupils to complement them. She had ivory colored skin that rivaled my own. Most of the time she wore black, as did many of us, with an accented color like green, red, or pink. Ryden was undoubtably beautiful but she fought like a commando. Ryden took off as soon as she caught a glimpse of me standing a few feet away. Harper skipped in her cheerful way over to me. "Hey Raven!" "......hi....." "Did you hear what happened to Ryden?" I glared at her obviously showing that I was getting tiered of hear her name, "No" "She found this fancy castle. She said looks really old but seems to be in working condition. Ryden looked, inside saw a bunch of rich people in a library type thing. She said it might be a country club. But you know what's the weird part?" ".....what?....." "Its in the middle of a dark forest." Old castle like buildings in the middle of the woods? A bunch of rich looking people? Either these people were insane, which was unlikely, or this place was a serious vampire hot spot. We approached our regular table right in the middle of the lunch. I turned to see Ryden in line buying a ham sandwich. I swallowed as much of my pride as I could then walked over to her. I smiled at her and in my friendliest voice I said "Hi, Ryden." Her greens didn't even turn in my direction, "Bye, Raven." Again I swallowed my pride even though it wanted to come out and slap her with the back of my hand. I fallowed her strait to her table. She threw her bag down and at last looked up to glare at me. "OK WHAT THE HELL DO YOU WANT RAVEN?" "I heard you found this awesome country club yesterday." "Yeah? And?" "I was wondering if, well, you could show it to me." She sighed, "Look, Raven..." I glared into her eyes which was enough to cut her off. A heat wave rushed over me, I was not in the mood to argue with her. Ryden seemed to catch my message, "Fine I don't see why not..." I took in a breath, "Thank you." I was so glad I would have to beat the crap out of her to get the answer I wanted. Malaia then walked to the table where Ryden was sitting. Malaia was a fasionist, always pointing out if someone had a fashion that wasn't "right." Her hair was brown and she had bangs that swung in front of her face. Malaia was around a lot but I didn't know much about her. I turned around and walked strait back to my own table. Rita was there sharing a plate of nachos with Harper and April. Every group had a person who was dumber than a door knob and April fit the bill. Sometimes April's flower pot head was filled with perverted thoughts. The sandy blonde thing she called her hair was anchored down by black tips. She was the one who always ended up with weird boyfriends. Chip brought his tray to the table, "What's up?" Chip was April's current boyfriend. He was lazy and quiet to everyone except our group. Curly black hair was piled on top his head. Chip was always sleepy no matter what time of day, what noise was being made, or where he was. April smiled and gave Chip a hug, " Not much. What's up with you?" He shrugged her hug off and replied, "Sleepy.." We all passed around a look as Harper, Rita, Malaia, April and I walked out of the cafeteria. Harper blushed a deep red when Nagako walked with us. He was in love with me and Harper was in love with him. Nagako was tall and his eyes were slanted. His hair was cut into a bowl shape and was black. There was no doubt that he was smart but he was distracted by the simple things in life. When approached our desks within the Japanese room Nagako smiled," Hey." "What?" "Are you going to homecoming?" 'Yeah?" "You wanna g..." "No!" He frowned and his forehead wrinkled, "But I..." "NO!" I growled. He sat back up terrified, breathing just hard enough that I could hear him. I saw Harper look at me. I looked back smiling but her expression was different. It was hating and loving. As if she was saying, "Thanks for not taking him but dam that was harsh!" Most of Japanese was just reviewing tell the bell. I burst out the door when the bell rang. Biology was one of my favorite and best classes. I plopped into my seat next to the one guy I trusted. Abe was huge! He was 6' 0" with giant hands and feet. He had muscle but he was skinny at the same time. He was April's exboyfriend who didn't want to move on. I didn't know the details but it was a clean, normal break up. I would care about him later, at the moment I need to plan my trip to this "library. I would need to get some good weapons together to deal with whatever vampires came after me. For long range, a rifle, I'd keep it simple for now. Then what if we got in a close range? The first choice I had was my 9mm Wolfsbane of course. Maybe I 'd take a few throwing knives just for the hell of it. But then there was the issue of Ryden. She would probably stick around which meant I'd have to protect her. The council of the Royal Mejah wouldn't be to happy about this either. Last time I took a mission with out meeting with the council Madam Bezique, the head of the council, was furious. If I did consult with them they would send other hunters with me and they would still my lime light. Abe shook me, "Time to get going." I got up shocked. Had I been zoning out that long? Either way it was the last period of the day, trigonometry. I stepped into the room, grimaced at the smell of math books and sneakers. My seat was next to my best friend, Jessica. Jessica was short . Her skin was extremely tan for a white person as if it was May all the time. She wasn't flat like a pancake but her physical abilities were amazing. She wasn't the type to read the newspaper with scones and tea. Jessica wasn't like the rest of us by eating small salads. She hair was brown, curly, and bouncy. She had been almost my sister but lately there had been a void between. Jessica spent most of her day like the rest of the class, spacing or thinking of who-knows-what. Some guy who sat in the back and I were the only people who understood what our teacher was saying. "Hey, Raven?" she said as she poked me in the side. I squeaked a high pitch squeak, "What?" "Do you know....how to do this?" "Of course...." I sighed. I saw the numbers and letters bounce around in her coconut like head for a while until they fell into the correct order Eyes were on my back when I turned everyone's eyes were down on their work. "Jumpy?" "Shut up, Jessica...." The last bell of the day rang at last. Everyone was so relieved. Walking slowly was the only way I was going to find Ryden in this crowd. But, of course, she had to prove me wrong and stand at the top of the stairs like Cleo-freaking-patra. She walked down the stairs still holding her regal appearance. "Ready?" I took in a deep breath in," I guess..." |
