Werewolf Forum Game Sign-up thread Started by: CardboardBox on May 16, '13 20:26

Hi all,

This is a forum game which proved to be very popular on another similar mafia game which unfortunately got taken down recently and I'm hoping it will be well received here too, it's a fascinating game involving mind games, virtual killing and plenty of drama so hopefully it should interest a few of you!

The Rules

At the beginning of the game each player is given a 'role' at random and in secret by myself, the moderator, via PM. Those roles are Villager (good) and Werewolf (evil)

The villagers will greatly outnumber the werewolves — in a 21 player game for example there will only be 3 werewolves — and the aim of the villagers is to identify and kill all the werewolves before the werewolves can kill enough villagers so that (#of wolves = #of villagers).

How are players killed?
Each 'turn' of the game will last 24hrs and also represents one 'day' of gametime, thus a game will go on for several days before it is concluded. There are two 'phases' to every turn of the game;

Night Phase - 10pm to 10am: When the werewolves secretly decide amongst themselves, via a Back Alley thread, which villager (one per night) that they shall slaughter and kill and then each inform the moderator of their vote via PM.

Day Phase - 10am to 10pm: After the slaughter has been announced, everybody, villagers and werewolves alike, discusses and ultimately votes publically in the game-thread upon which player (one per day) that they shall lynch and kill.

Obviously during the day the villagers will want the group to vote for and lynch a werewolf, whilst the werewolves themselves will want not to be lynched; herein lies the fundamental strategy of the game; can the villagers identify the werewolves whilst at the same time convincing the rest of the group that they're not themselves a werewolf? And can the werewolves convince the group that they're not wolves at all and thus avoid being lynched?

Special Roles
To help the villagers out in their decision, some of them will be given special roles, there will be one of each per game. These roles are as follows:

Seer: the seer has the ability to PM the moderator once per turn and ask him 'Is X a werewolf?' to which the moderator will answer truthfully yes or no.

Priest: the priest will learn the roles of any players killed in the game.

Witness: the witness selects another player (has to be different each turn) to follow, if that player is killed during the night then the witness learns the identity of one of the werewolves. If the witness selects a werewolf then he/she learns nothing, because werewolves are too crafty to be followed, and if he ever does witness a killing then he becomes, for the remainder of the game, a normal villager.

Players given these roles can announce them to the group if so desired, as can any player announce anything to the group really (in a game of Werewolf lying and deception is encouraged), but beware, doing so would likely make you a prime target for slaughter.

Werewolf Etiquette
There are two main rules which everyone must follow in order for the game to run successfully;

KILLED PLAYERS MUST LEAVE THE GAME
If you are killed at any point during the game then you are no longer allowed to participate; you may not reveal your role or further discuss voting or anything to do with the game in progress, and cannot even post anymore I'm the game thread.

THERE MUST BE NO PRIVATE COMMUNICATION BETWEEN PLAYERS EXCEPT BETWEEN WEREWOLVES
Between non-werewolves, sending PM's or other forms of private communication concerning the game is not allowed.

Anyone found to be breaking the above rules will be banned from the next game, and repeat offences will result in being banned from all future games should there be any; please follow the rules and keep the game legitimate.

If all goes well I'll keep a league table between games: 10pts for each player if their team is successful + any other points from different personal achievements (new player roles can be added to increase complexity, and sometimes these can have personal victory conditions) as well as points for still being alive at the end of a game. I'll try to keep track of as much as possible regarding statistics, which will always be helpful during deduction as well as perhaps making for an interesting read.

Quote:
Voting
During the Day Phase players must vote for who to lynch.  To vote, message the moderator with the subject VOTE LYNCH

Upon the voting deadline (end of day-phase) the votes will be tallied by the moderator and whoever has received the most will be lynched and be out of the game: remember, once killed you cannot take further part; do not reveal your roles to anyone until the game has been concluded. The priest alone will be informed of the dead player's role by the moderator.  Who voted for who will be revealed to all after the lynch.

Any ties in voting will be decided by the moderator using a random number generator.

During Night Phase, werewolves must let the moderator know their vote in their Back Alley thread or via PM before the deadline (before the start of the following Day Phase). One wolf will be given leaders status and have the final decision.  Again, if they fail to do so, or do not agree and votes are tied, the player slaughtered shall be chosen randomly by the moderator.

The Seer and the Witness must inform the moderator of their day's 'target' via PM, if they fail to do so then they simply miss the opportunity.

Time Scales
As I've said, each 'day' in the game lasts for 24hrs in real life, 10am-10pm Day Phase and 10pm-10am Night Phase.

That's it really, that's how you play.

Sign up below if you want to be involved in the first game and we'll see if we can get enough to start the first Night Phase tomorrow night.

Report Post Tip

There's a version of this on IRC. Prat has to get the bot running, but it's about.

if you get enough players i'll play.

It's more fun in some ways in a forum format because you get to strategise and stuff over a long time, which you can't so much in real-time.

You can count me in.

Report Post Tip

I'll give this a go if anybody else goes for it.

i am in :D

We have 6 players so far, 8 is probably the minimum needed but it's a way more fun with more players obviously so don't be shy and sign up people :)

It might look complicated but it's quite straightforward really, and you can always learn as the game goes on.

sure count me in though with thoes Time Scales are we going out from Gametime or your timezone?

Gametime

Report Post Tip

You don't have to be there at those exact times

For the village lynch, you just have to submit your vote at anytime between 10am and 10pm, but obviously, the more time you have for discussion with the other villagers, the bettet

For the werewolf kill, the werewolves must pick a target between 10pm and 10am

Let me know what your preferred times are and I can find better times if needed.  It's difficult with a mix of Europeans and Americans and these are the best times I feel but let me know if you have any better ideas.

I don't think I will start this tonight as I want ti get as many players as possible and Sunday night might be better.  Tell all your friends, the more the merrier!

Is there a role for a were-pig?

Report Post Tip

What special abilities would a were-pig have?

On a more serious note, are you saying you're interested? ;s

Report Post Tip

I think a were-pig would have pretty much the same special abilities as a werewolf just more piggy like and dirtier

Report Post Tip

I'm in!

Also, this game is awesome to play IRL. I love it!

Report Post Tip

I'm up for it, count me in.

I played this in irc for years. I don't see how it would translate well to real time, but I'd give it a go. You can play a variant with only 5 players, but for the traditional game you really need 9, and then you only have a seer and 2 wolves, need more for other roles.
