tony approaches the unconscious body slumped over and tied to a chair in the middle of the warehouse floor. As he lit yet another cigarette his mind ran rampid with all that had transpired over the past 8 hours. "Let us handle it little brother they said, stay home and watch the house they said. Well we'll see who gets sent to the house for guard duty now!" tony exclaimed out loud. "Hey Antonio, you're talking to yourself again" tony turns to look across the dimly lit warehouse at Salvatore, his older cousin and accomplice on this unauthorized escapade. "I told you already Salvatore! I am to no longer to be called Antonio! You refer to me as tony or keep your fuckin mouth shut!" tony had long out grown his birth name, no longer the baby of the family though still the youngest of three boys to local Palermo Don Vito Capone. tony was now 18 years old, a man in my aspects for three years in Palermos culture. Often teased by his two older brothers, Vito Jr and Vincenzo and often left at home by his father or sent on protection collection runs with his aforementioned cousin Salvatore. tony was tired of being treated like the baby, tired of living in his brothers and fathers shadow. "Salvatore do you know what this will mean?" Salvatore looks up at tony from the overturned crate he's perched upon greasing his shotgun in front of him. "What's what mean Ant..umm tony?" "What this means, what we're doing. What its gonna bring us, how much respect we'll finally get instead of being the bullshit errand boys!?" tony broke from his nervous gaze and peered at Salvatore with an almost deranged smile. "No longer will we be put in charge of watching the house, no more shaking down shop owners or farmers for little to nothing! We'll be the ones who people give gifts to, no more paying for bread or fresh produce in town. People will cower before us!" tonys thoughts of conquest are interrupted. "Or your father will have us shot, or the militia will come for us for what we're doing." Salvatore doesn't even look up as he speaks as he knew the consequences when his younger cousin convinced him to come along. Salvatore wasn't looked at as an intelligent man. At 21 years of age he should have been expected to do more, his late father, the Dons only brother had expected more from his only son. But alas Salvatore was more muscle than brain and was good at using the stronger of the two. tonys father loved his only nephew, and respected that as his brothers son and his brothers wishes he'd allow him to live the life, but couldn't afford to allow his slightness of mind to effect his business. This is why his youngest son tony had been paired with Salvatore for shakedowns and collections. The Don knew that with his newphews braun and his sons intelligence and cunning they would make a good pair. It also was a way to insure his slight of frame son who he had hoped would move on to better things in life opposed to following along in his families foot steps would always be protected. The Don knew tony was more intelligent than his older brothers, it was clear from a young age. He also wasn't as hot headed and often the Don spent his days inside the house where they lived playing piano with young tony or walking him through the field that stretched far and wide near their home teaching him about the different rows and what they would yield. His brothers however in the meanwhile would be out doing whatever necessary to make a name for themselves and put extra money in their pockets even at the ages of 12 and 13. The old Don had saw more in tony, but tony only ever saw himself being the one to be like his father, to be powerful, to be respected and had become jealous of his brothers for he looked at it as favortism and as if he were being passed over. His trip down memory lane is quickly interrupted as the formerly unconscious begins to stir and moan. "tony, he's.." "I know Salvatore, I know!" tony quickly flips down another cigarette as he stamps it out and motions to his cousin while he walks towards the man tied in the chair. "Get the fuck over here!" "And bring the gun, come on whats wrong with you!?" He chastises Salvatore as he had began to stand and walk over without his freshly greased up shotgun. "Sorry tony" Salvatore grumbles soft heartedly as a child would while being lectured as he turned and grabbed the gun before making his way over to tony. They stood in front of the man as he awoke from his haze and began to thrash around a bit and yell for help. tony nods at Salvatore as he lowers the barrel of the gun and places it in the man's mouth despite his best efforts to squirm away from it. tony crouches down so that he is eye level with the man and peering into his eyes. "Now listen up and keep your fucking mouth shut! You understand me!?" The man nods his head frantically as tears stream down his face and mix with dried blood. "Now I'm going to have my friend here take the gun out of your mouth so that you and I can have a little chat. You understand?" The man again quickly nods his head again and tony stands up and nods towards Salvatore. Salvatore slowly removes the gun and brings it back to lay across his chest as the man in the chair gasps for air and spits a few times. "Do you know who I am?" tony speaks down to him. "N..n..no" The man replies. "Well before this is all over you'll know who the fuck I am!" tony breaks his calm demeanor and yells before coming back to reality and collecting himself. "Do you know who Don Capone is?" tony growls holding back his aggression. "Y..y..yes" The man answers once more. "Then you must know why you're here then! If you know who MY FATHER is then you must know why I've went through so much trouble to get you here! And you were not an easy man to get ahold of! Do you know how many people guarding your house my cousin here had to kill in order for us to get to you!? How tempted we were to just put a bullet in you and your family in your own house just to be done with your greedy, sticky fingers!? tony pauses to light up another cigarette. "I..I'll pay, ill do whatever you want just please...!" Salvatore nudges the gun towards the man again as he quickly leans back and closes his mouth. "Good you're learning" tony smiles slightly. "Your wife and daughters are still alive. I have a tiny bit of a heart left after all. We did have to tie them up and tape their mouths shut, but someone will find them I'm sure before they starve to death." More tears begin to roll down the man's face. "STOP your fucking crying!" tony shouts. "As a man who wanted to use his city official status to to play criminal you don't seem much like you're willing to accept the responsibilities for your actions!" "You've been cutting into my fathers territory, arresting his men. Having them executed and then taking over his operations! Does that sound like something an city official does!? You've had militia fire upon my family, burn our fields and worst yet not because you're doing your duty. No! No! But because you want the money that belongs to my family name!" tony stops for a moment and takes a long draw from his cigarette. "You see we've always had a good relationship with city officials. You get your cut, we continue to do our thing. We protect you and the citizens of this land from the bullshit militia you've allowed to run their way where we kept them out. Everyone was prosperous and no one had to fear an firing squad! Unless of course you fuck with us then maybe my father has mercy on you maybe he don't. He does have a big heart, but not for treachery such as this!" "Answer me this, is it not my father who got you on as an city official? Is it not my father who financed your campaign!?" tony turns slightly and removes a gun from his waist before holding it in his hand as he turns back. "And this is yet how you repay him? You have the militia breathing down our necks. You have our men being killed, the same men who ensured you'd not be opposed in this city. My uncle, his father, the second in command in la familgia you have executed for receiving a gift in town center from a merchant whom without him, without my father would likely be out of work and out of land, raped from him by the ones you use to get ahead." tony kneels down again to be eye level with the man. "What you don't realize however is after you've helped them remove us from the city, after all the money is flowing to you and there's no one left to protect you, you'd be next! But you're a fool, a moron! However they won't get the opportunity!" tony slips the gun to the man's temple as the man squirms and sweats. "Don't do this, I can work out something for you, I can make you a wealthy man! I can do things with my connections!" tony kicks the man's chair backwards as it crashes to the ground he walks over him and stands pointing the gun down at his head. "I don't give a fuck how wealthy you can make me, or about any of your bullshit promises! Unless you tell me that you do a magic trick when I pull this trigger I really just don't give a shit!" The man begins to sob loudly as tony motions for Salvatore to come forward to stand over the man. As Salvatore approaches he points the gun down to the man also. tony looks at Salvatore with a slight smile before looking back down at the city official crying and squirming frantically trying to work his way loose. "You remember I said before this was all said and done you'd know who I am!? Huh, do ya!?" "My name is tony capone, and i'll see you in hell you piece of shit!" tony squeezes the trigger and with a loud bang blood splatters from the man's head as another louder shot rings out through the warehouse as Salvatore has fired into his chest. With the gun powder and smoke still filling their lungs the two men stand over, their guns still aimed at the lifeless bloodied body below as a pool begins to make its way to their shoes. "What do we do with him, where, what, ...?" Salvatore can't seem to focus his thoughts. "Grab that rug and get me a saw, I got an idea of what to do with this fuck." The hours passed as dawn began to creep near. tony and Salvatore had already made their escape and had left town on horseback so that they might make ship sailing for America in three days. They weren't sure how Don Capone would react to what had been done. This was not part of his plan. They also were just as unsure that the family could survive any more attacks from the militia as they now doubled their families numbers since the executions and attacks had began. His father had wanted to attack the militia first before dealing with the greedy official. But as his brothers led what was left of the families soldiers into battle more trained men tony had other plans. Perhaps by eliminating the official the towns folks would rise up and fight with the family to send the brutal militia away. He couldn't risk sticking around to see the results as he knew either way it went there was a possibility now that he would be killed. His father had always wanted better for him. Now perhaps as he was on his way to catch a ship sailing for America he could have better. His cousin Cassiopeia had already ventured to America and with Salvatore in tow, being his sister she would surely find them work and introduce them to the land of the free. As for the respect the two had hoped to find from everyone, his family, his people, as he had cut the officials limbs from his body and had time to quietly ponder within his mind what Salvatore unwittingly said earlier about being killed either way he knew that he had to move on. Perhaps in a few years he would receive word of his families triumph in Palermo and he could take comfort in knowing of their well being, or if he heard otherwise at least take comfort in that he had a life to live and a new opportunity at new money. To make a name for himself and no longer live in shadows. What happened to the mutilated body of the city official? He was found at day break in the towns center with his body parts scattered in different places throughout the center. A hopeful warning, a message for uprising, hopefully a prequel to success for the people, for his family. As tony and Salvatore came closer to the port at the shores edge two days later, they looked out at the waters with the sun seemingly rising from its grasp and smiled towards one another and said but one word between them, America. The end. |
