S.O.S. Birdman! Started by: Marietta on Dec 09, '08 14:48
The woman tilted her head to the side as she studied the icicle hanging from the street sign across the road. She stared intently, not breaking eye contact for minutes, until at last the post was bumped, the sign shivered in response, and the icicle went plummeting to it's death upon the sidewalk below. Marietta Rossi sighed to herself and muttered, Twelve, out loud to herself. That was, as she had stated, the twelfth shard of ice she had watched fall from a sign, building, or vehicle that morning. What else was she to do while she was sitting, on a disgusting public bench, in the middle of a patch of snow?

Her body gave an involuntary shiver and she wrapped Pedro's overcoat closer to her body for warmth. How long ago had the man left her there? "I'll be back in twenty minutes, I promise," was his bargain for leaving her there. "Twenty minutes? I'll be dead by then!" she remembered protesting, to which he tore of his coat and tossed it over her shoulders, placing his hand gun into her small, gloved hands and laughing. "Twenty minutes."

'Twenty minutes my ass', she thought bitterly. 'If I freeze to death I hope my blood is on his hands.

The Godmother thought briefly about the afternoon meeting she was supposed to be having. In her mind's eye she pictured Zoey, Aurora and Guardian, all gathered around an intimate table in Giovanni's- the ladies sipping tea and nibbling on biscotti cookies whilst Guardian stared at them in distaste and drank whiskey. She knew they would understand why she was late, but that was besides the point. *She* wanted to be eating biscotti, God damn it.

This is unfair, she sighed, tearing her eyes from the spot where the icicle had fallen instead to her cute, black little Dodge sitting next to the sidewalk before her. Her insides churned with upset when she imagined the cost of the bill the mechanic would send her. All at once her memory faded back to that morning; her asking Pedro if he heard that funny noise as they drove along Main Street. Him ignoring her, per usual. Him being *wrong* about ignoring her per usual, when her cute little 1934 model broke down in the middle of the road. They had managed to push it off of the main road and onto Henderson Avenue, but that was as far as they could get it in the mountainous snow that kept building up before them. It was then that Pedro had offered to run back to the headquarters, grab a few of the guys to help them.

And Marietta had stupidly believed he would be back any time soon.

Oh my, what's that? she said, rather loudly, to herself, fixing her eyes on another icicle hanging on the eaves of a bakery across the street. Let's see how long it takes for this one to fall... one... two... three...

Stuck in her own little hypnotic-like trance she did not see the man walking up the street towards her. Nor did she see him stop to stare at her, as if she were insane. "Miss?" he asked, reaching out his hand and touching her lightly on her shoulder. The sudden jolt freaked Marietta out beyond belief, and without a second thought she leapt from the bench with an earsplitting scream.

Inside the little bakery, Harvey Birdman cursed his boss and friend, Azuela.

Son of a bitch, sending me to friggin' Detroit for a loaf of rye bread. I don't care how good this bread is, it wasn't worth it.

The warm aroma of the bakery was a womb, protecting those inside from the bitter cold outside. Harvey sampled some of the marbled rye Azuela had ordered. Hell, maybe it was worth it after all.

The baker put the bread in a bag and Harvey paid him. Cheap bastard Azuela, expecting me to pay for his bread. And in this weather, no less. Harvey turned up the collar on his overcoat and stepped out onto the sidewalk. Realizing that there was no way in hell he was going to get another cab in this weather, he decided to walk. As he did, a scream cut through the cold winter air like a hot knife through butter. He turned toward the sound of the scream and a shot rang out.

Running down the street, the cold air slapping his face like a woman scorned, Harvey soon found a woman standing above a body, holding a smoking gun.

"Marietta? Is that you? What are you doing out here? And why'd you shoot a cop?!?"

She sat back down on the bench, tucking the gun into the coat that was obviously not hers. I had known the Godmother for years, but I hadn't seen her this rattled since the Sox threw the World Series. I kneeled down, checked the cop's pulse, out of habit, more than anything. He was very dead. Blood was starting to flower out into the inches of snow that surrounded the corpse. This was a piss poor neighborhood. That, combined with the weather, had kept people indoors today. No one had seen the shooting, at least, as far as I could tell. Marietta's eyes blazed, angry at the situation, at the cop, and probably herself.

Damn, Marietta, I need to buy us some time. Hold this.

I handed her the bag of rye bread and took off my hat. I used the hat as a shovel, to pile the snow from the side of the road over the corpse. It took a few minutes to cover him. It was obviously a body covered with snow, but if you were driving by, it would be hard to notice.

Marietta, get a grip. We need to go. Now.

She was stunned. There was no way in hell she had lost her composure like that. And in public no less! All she could do was stared, shocked, as one of her friends Harvey Birdman almost seemingly flew to the scene. Reflexes... she muttered as she sat back down on the bench. Reflexes.

It was seemingly the only word that sprung forward to her mind. With cold, dark eyes, Marietta lifted her head towards Harvey. Her friend looked back at her, handing over a bag of bread from the bakery around the corner. She stared at it in confusion, barely registering the sound of the Birdman packing snow over the body. The body that was laying there because *she* had lost her cool, flipped out and started playing Shoot 'Em Up, Tex!

Hahaha, she began to laugh, standing from the bench when Harvey told her to get a move on. I'm fucked! Marietta threw her hands in the air, the bag of bread still dangling from her gloved grip as she cracked a sadistic smile. I'm totally and completely fucked. What is wrong with me? How could I even...?

Her words were cut short by the sound of tires on snow. Whirling around she saw a car approaching, slowing down as the passenger and driver both began to gesture wildly and point to the rose-colored stained blossoms on the snow. Oh shit, Marietta growled, her black cap falling off of her hair to reveal her long blond locks. You're right, we need to move.

Grabbing Birdman's hand she quickly dashed off down the road, the bag of bread still swinging from her fingers. Darting down an alley she turned, wildly to face her friend. I need to get back to my headquarters... undetected. I need your help.

Harvey was silent and merely flashed her a look, darting glances up and down either way of the alley. Don't give me that look, Marietta said lowly. I know I messed up. I just killed a cop in my own damn city. Who do you think they'll put the blame on? Me and mine. I lost my cool. Things haven't been easy lately, I just... She hesitated, closing her green eyes briefly and taking a deep breath before opening them again. Her mouth curled into a smile as she stepped forward and handed the rye bread back to Harvey. Remember that time I got your ass out of trouble in New Jersey? It'll be just like old times.

The expression on her face softened for just a moment as she looked up at the Birdman. Please?

From the alley, we could still see the corpse shaped bulge in the snowbank. A crimson halo had begun to form around it as blood leaked out into the newfalled snow.

"Ok," I said. "I'll help. Where the hell is that bodyguard of yours, anyway?"

Fucking Pedro. He still owed me twenty bucks from that card game in Denver.

"You know how to build a snowman?"

She looked at me like I was insane, but she started rolling snow along the ground, all the same. As she did, I quickly dragged the body out from the shallow snow grave I had created, hoisted him on my shoulder, and carried him to her. She had finished the bottom of the snow man.

She gave the "what the hell?" look that I was so familiar with, but I didn't have time to explain. I put the cop's feet in the big snowball and began to pack snow around him.

"Friggin' quick, Mari. We don't have much time."

We packed snow around the stiffening body. It was a stroke of luck that the cop wasn't very tall. The cold of the snow had stopped the bleeding from his chest. I went back to the curb, swept away any bloody snow, and returned to Marietta, who was staring at the snowman.

"Frosty, old pal, you need a hat and coat. And a face."

I took off my coat, ripped the buttons off, and made a face for the snowman. Then, I gave him my coat and hat. Marietta handed me Pedro's coat, which fit nicely. I figured it was worth $20, anyway.

"We have to get out of here. We can't be seen with this snowman, we don't need any connection. But this bought us some time, at least until Pedro gets here. Oh, don't worry about the coat and hat, I borrowed them from MFer."

We could hear a siren nearing. We both knew that we would have to move the body before anyone found it. The look of panic crossed her normally calm face again and she ran back to the alley as I followed, humming "Frosty the Snowman."

This was fucking insane. *Birdman* had to be fucking insane. One minute he was telling her to run, the next they were playing like five year old kids in the snow, hiding a body in a *snowman*? As strange as this was all turning out to be, Marietta knew better than to question the man's madness. She had known him for quite some time and knew that every little thing he did was apart of some greater scale plan. In fact, there was only a short list of about twenty-odd people she would rather be with in an emergency like this.

The guilt of still having killed the cop was starting to make her twitchy and nervous as the sirens approached. She glanced over at 'Frosty' one last time before darting back into the alleyway. Echoes of car doors slamming shut and crunching snow beneath someone's shoes as they halted, distracted by something out on the sidewalk.

Ohmigawd we're so dead, Marietta hissed to Harvey, stepping behind him in a childish gesture of hiding. The footsteps only hesitated for another moment before they began walking again, tentatively, towards the opening of the alleyway. Harveyholycrapdoyouhaveagunjustincaseweneedtokillsomeone?! the blond's sentence came out in a rush. "No, Mari, we're not killing another cop," Harvey whispered back, stepping back against the brick wall to hide and dragging her with him. Her breathing felt heavy as she saw a man step into the mouth of the alley, his head darting from side to side.

"I know you're in here," came a deep male voice. Holyfuckwe'resodead, the Godmother squealed, wringing the Birdman's arm in fear. With wide eyes she watched as the figure stepped further into the alley, walking seemingly straight towards them. At last, five feet away, he placed his hands in his jacket pockets and whispered, "Boo."

YOU ASSHOLE! Marietta screamed, darting forward and punching the man- Pedro- square on the shoulder. Twenty minutes?! TWENTY MINUTES?! Do you even KNOW what I've been through?!

Pedro merely ignored the woman's rant, turning to face Harvey. He nodded and smiled in greeting and gestured back towards the main road. "I saw the blood. What happened?" he asked of his old friend, ignoring the pounding of Marietta's fists upon his chest and back as she bounced around him raving and shrieking.

The sirens neared as Marietta pounded on her bodyguard.

You should know by now you can't let this one out of your sight. I bet you hadn't been gone five minutes before she shot a cop.

Pedro stopped Marietta's fists, catching her mid-rant. "You killed a cop? What the hell? What were you thinking?"

Marietta stopped talking altogether, in a sort of pout. She tucked her hands deep into her pockets and kicked at the snow.

I hope the hell you brought a car, Pedro, or this might get interesting.

Pedro nodded and motioned toward the car. Marietta stomped by us both, toward the waiting car. Another car slowly drove by on the snowy road. The weather was probably slowing the cops. More than likely, the first people who drove by had called them. Detroit cops. It would take them an hour or so to find the body in that snowman. Hopefully, we would be gone by then.

Marietta. Stop. The gun. Give me the gun. And the bread, if you don't mind.

She sighed, turned, and handed them both to me. I pulled the loaf out of the bag and shoved the pistol inside the bread. I put the bread back into the bag, then tossed it all into the dumpster. Detroit cops. If they found the gun, it was because one of them was hungry.

Let's get the hell out of dodge. And I'd appreciate it if you'd stop by that bakery a block or so from here, I need a new loaf of bread.

We climbed into the car and Pedro started to pull away. As he did, I turned to look at the wonderful snowman we had built with MFer's hat and coat. Marietta was still fidgeting, turning to look for the oncoming cops, mumbling about the car we were leaving behind... We had the same exclamation simultaneously.

Shit!

Pedro jammed on the brakes and skidded to a halt. He turned and looked at us both. "What now, smart guys? Build a damn snow car?

Well...

Marietta punched me in the gut. We had to get that car out of there, or we might as well have signed Marietta's name in the cop's blood.
Report Post Tip
Get out of the car.

Marietta wasn't used to taking orders. She gave me a quick look and climbed out of the back seat of the car after me. I leaned back in to talk to Pedro.

Back up, hit the other car. Not too hard, but hard enough to keep it from moving.

Pedro shrugged, put the car in gear and started backing up. I grabbed Marietta's elbow and pulled her to the curb. Pedro kept the car in reverse and rammed the front of the other car. The sound of crunching metal and breaking glass split the icy silence.

Marietta was saying something, I wasn't listening. Pedro climbed out of the car. "Now what?" He was annoyed with me, that made it easier.

Come over here a second.

I was standing about where Marietta had shot the cop. When Pedro got there, I hit him with an uppercut that would have stopped a charging bull. He didn't flinch, but he was obviously stunned. I reached in my pocket, pulled out my gun, and hit him in the face with that. His nose was bleeding and, as he clutched it, I hit him in the head with the gun butt, and he fell, unconscious.

Marietta was screaming at this point. I tucked the gun back into my pocket, quickly, and the cops finally arrived.

"What the hell happened here?" Detroit cops. Marietta was still screaming obscenities at me.

This asshole backed that car into me, then got out screaming at me. He threw a punch, I knocked his ass out. And that bitch won't stop screaming at me, either. Like it was my fault.

One of the other cops walked over to Marietta. "Calm down, ma'am. Just an accident. Stop screaming." Marietta stopped, but there was still fire in her eyes. If I hadn't taken that gun from her earlier, she'd shot me dead.

My damn car is destroyed. It's about time you guys got here, I thought that bastard was going to pull a gun or something.

"Sir, the weather slows us down quite a bit. We got a call about a body lying here, I guess they weren't kidding." Pedro began to stand and I started yelling.

Tell that asshole he owes me for the car!

Another cop walked up to me, hand raised as if to stop me from attacking Pedro again. He talked in a lowered voice. "Sir, you best drop the whole thing. The lady over there has, well, connections, if you know what I mean. If you value your life, you should probably let this one go."

Son of a bitch. This damn car isn't going anywhere. Something is broken, it won't even run. Damn it. Shit. Alright. I'll get a cab.

I walked away and the cops explained to Marietta and Pedro that it was over and they could go home. She and Pedro drove away in a slightly damaged car, and I walked back to the bakery to get another loaf of bread. The storm had set in, so the cop wouldn't melt for a few days. Hopefully, Marietta would have someone take car of it before then.
