Me? A Crook? The huckster feigned outrage at the whispered accusation from the well dressed man who was trying his best to not draw the attention of passers-by as he confronted the man whom he was starting to suspect was nothing more than a common thief. Of course I'm a crook, good sir! You wanted a crook, didn't you? Larry was decidedly less worried about appearances and subtlety, as he let his voice rise whimsically, and gestured wildly as he spoke. This was only adding to his accuser's frustration, making him lean closer, and whisper lower, hoping that the huckster would follow his example, and not invite all of the people browsing fruit on the sidewalk into their conversation. You do know that you came to me, asking me to get you something that is entirely illegal in the United States, right? We're not talking about a plane to Cleveland here. You needed a crook, sir. You hired a crook. You hired a damn good crook. He turned to look over a selection of apples, as his customer steeped in his own anger and muttered something about getting a job done when you say it will be done. You're right sir, and usually I'd be jumping through endless hoops to accommodate you, but... The huckster turned back to the man, discreetly tucking an apple into his coat pocket. You've got me dealing with people in Africa. No shit, Africa. Do you have any idea how many contacts I have in Africa? Not a fucking lot, okay? In fact, it was sheer luck that one of my usual guys even knew a guy who knew a guy with hand in the continent. And nearly a miracle that I was able to arrange what you asked for. Now, one of my guy's guy's guys got locked up on your job. We don;t expect it'll be too much trouble, I mean, he's a felon by trade, and he knows how to work the system in Congo or where the fuck ever. However... He turned his attention back to the produce, almost dismissing the fact that his associate was getting hotter under the collar with every word he spoke. ... They have to bring in another guy, you understand. The fatcat huffed a bit and let out a long sigh. The huckster turned to face him yet again, with as charming a smile as he could manage. And, of course, he wants a cut. But he's not one of the main men, you know... $3,000 ought to get him. The well-dressed man allowed his face to sag in disappointed surrender. He had already pumped enough money into the deal that he couldn't bring himself to fully entertain the notion that he had been had-- tricked so completely and repeatedly. He reached for his wallet. Oh, the starving children of Africa thank you, sir. Expect a call in a few weeks. I apologize for the delays. I personally will not stand for any more, my good man. Even if I have to fly to the jungle on my own dime next week to ensure proper delivery. Larry accepted the bills from the man, looked them over casually, but carefully. You shouldn't carry this much cash on hand, sir. Plenty of unsavory characters on these streets. Someone might take it from you. Have a nice day, sir. He flashed an even bigger friendly grin than before and nodded a farewell to the rich man, as he turned to march irritatedly back to his part of the neighborhood, or at least around the block where his driver had parked the car. The huckster chuckled quietly to himself as he turned his own way and started down the sidewalk. Bye forever! He crossed against a light when he came to the next intersection and matched stride with a young girl coming from the other end of the avenue. He pulled the apple from his coat pocket and tossed it to her. Say little girl, been bit by any rabid dogs today? |

VictoriaValium leaned on the side of the door and gave the wood a nice knock. She could hear someone walking towards it within the house, so VV stood up properly and fixed the vest she wore. The door swiftly opened with a women towering over the stoop. Hiya! Victoria said, her face plastered with a bright smile. I'm walking door to door today to raise money for St. Anthony's orphanage. We'd love a donation from you today, anything helps! She stuck a tin can out in the space between herself and the housewife. Rotating her wrist back in forth to make the coins inside the cup jingle. VictoriaValium hoped other peoples hope for starving naked children gave this women hope. If yes, then she would also donate some spare change. The look on the women's face wasn't going in the right direction, VV put in a big pout. Her lower lip folding into her chin and her eyes became a little droopy. If she needed to she could have sparked a tear, but as soon as the women saw the puppy dog eyes she was rushing back inside for her coin wallet. VictoriaValium smiled inward to herself. Success! She was proud of herself and that extra fire soot on her cheeks helped a lot. She told herself to do that every time. The housewife swiftly came back with a few coins and a dollar bill. She plopped both of them into the cup and also produced a hankie. Inside of this soft fabric were two freshly made buns. They smelled delishes, she urged VictoriaValium to take them. Thank you ma'am for all your kindness today. All the children will tell the lord of this and he will grant you many gifts in your long life. The woman smiled down at her and then shut the door. VictoriaValium pulled the dollar bill out of the can and then poured all the change into her coat pocket. She then threw the tin can in the bushes. Honestly, it wasn't like she was stealing from anyone if there wasn't really wasn't a orphanage. VictoriaValium didn't feel bad either, if that women didn't understand what was going on then she deserved to be taken from. Wasn't like she was robbing a bank. VV started walking towards downtown and soon fell in line with a tall man a few blocks down from where she had dumped her ever so prized tin can of goodness. He smelled like booze and looked like he had just come from an all night party. VictoriaValium smiled walked with him in silence for a few seconds then turned her head and cocked a smile at him. His shirt collar unbuttoned and he threw her an apple that he pulled out from his tailed suit coat. "Say little girl, been bit by any rabid dogs today?" Her smile quickly turned into a smirk and she laughed. Not yet, did ya have somethin' in mind? |

Well... The Huckster, who's middle name happened to be Rudiger by the way, raised an eyebrow, feigning contemplation as he pulled a cigar from inside his coat and clutched it familiarly between his fingers. I do know of a pitbull on 42nd street who's looking for work. Belongs to an old couple who I hear are sitting on a pretty big banknote-- what you might call a quarter note. And when they get off it, it'll be a flat note. He smiled, self-approvingly and placed the end of the cigar between his teeth. I've been trying to think of an angle to get at that money since I heard about it. I was starting to think I'd have to marry their daughter and move in with her folks. But with the way she looks, I'd rather marry the dog and move in with her folks. There'd be less slobber to clean up that way, anyhow. He took the cigar from his mouth again, and hooked his thumbs behind the lapels of his coat. So how much did you bring in today? Maybe we should step into a speakeasy and tally up, and maybe I'll stop for a drink, and hope a drink stops for me too. Hey, what am I saying? I can't take a kid into a speakeasy. You're much too loud for that. |
