The start of something Awesome Started by: Awesome on Dec 11, '08 10:37
Awesome took a step off the boat and looked around the grand city of Philadelphia. It looked grand. As grand a city as a city can be. Turning towards the sound of shouts and screams he watched as a group of children ran around playing childish games across the dock. The thought that one of them might trip and fall into the sea brought a smile to his face. Fighting the urge to introduce himself to the children and then to them the bottom of the ocean, Awesome made his way into the city proper, making sure to bump into everyone who got in his way, and even those in who's way he got. He loved the way that so many are so unwilling to fight a stranger; always apologizing and seeking to quell any aggression in another. Indeed, one poor fellow tried to avoid Awesome as he walked determinedly across the street, but fell victim to a fairly obvious side-step and shove. And yet felt the need to apologize, as if he himself was being rude.

"I am so sorry, sir. I did not mean to get in your way. My mind must have wandered."

Smiling, Awesome cross-punched the man in the throat and watched him buckle to his knees. "Not a problem my dear fellow. Mistakes are but mistakes, so let's let bygones be bygones and be gone." Whilst whistling a little ditty he picked up from a street-worker who's business extended to that of boat-working, Awesome continued onwards towards the sounds of a busy city centre.

"Dum de dum. Awesome needs some money," he said to himself with his usual peculiarity of referring to himself in the third-person. He had but $1,000 in loose change in his pockets. Not yet enough cash to enable his inevitable city-wide takeover. But it would come. Oh, yes, it will come, he thought. And a good thought it was.

When he finally made it to the market-place, he took a look around at the swarm of people busy doing whatever it was that other people do. He notices one young woman walking about, all on her own, with a very fancy purse hung across her shoulder. And by "young" he was being ironic. She wasn't young. She was old. But thinking of someone as old is not a very nice thing to do. And Awesome wasn't a not nice person. His name is enough to suggest as such. Taking a step towards her, he extends out his hand in warm welcome. "Good day to you, miss. My name is Awesome, and I am in need of money. I have thus decided to offer you a business proposition. If you give me your purse then I shall leave you be. If you do not give me your purse then I shall punch you in the throat and take it from you." The look on her face was priceless. Shock and awe. And horror. And terror. And most likely a little confusion. 1, 2, 3, Awesome thought to himself, and back-hand slapped her after the third count. "Too slow. One more chance." She stuttered and stepped back before dropping the purse and running away. Awesome picked up the purse and took a sneaky peak.

"Success! You grabbed yourself $134." He also had this unusual peculiarity of narrating his own life. He was an odd one, in all honesty. "Score. That was fun. But let's not over do it." Picking up where he left off with his whistle-song, Awesome continued along his way, swinging the purse with speed and control, smacking people in the face with determination and direction.

"Time for me to find some friends. Can't get anywhere without friends." Awesome took another penetrating gaze around the square looking for someone of wealth and power. "Aha!" Over and across the way he saw the back of a nondescript person wearing an expensive and power-radiating suit. Man or woman, young or old, he could not tell. But he/she looked rich. And powerful. Perfect. Awesome made his way over to said nondescript person and tapped the young/old man/woman on the shoulder, hoping for a favourable response from a favourable person.

Waking up with a pounding headache Zoey slowly opened her eyes and didn't recognize her surroundings. It took her a few seconds to realize it was a hotel room. She moved slightly and felt someone next to her. She quickly sat up and opened her eyes wide in shock as she stared at MickeyRourke on the bed next to her.

Shit! Fuck! Son of a bitch! Damn it!

As Zoey swore her headache got worst. Waking up in a hotel room next to an associate after a long night of drinking was something she never did before. She felt like tramp and silently scolded herself for drinking so much tequila the night before. It took her a few seconds to look down and see she was dressed in the clothes she had on the night before. She looked over at Mickey and was relieved to see he had his clothes on too. She hoped that was a sign nothing happened between them. Pushing on his shoulder she shook him to wake him up.

Mickey, get up. How in the hell did we end up here? How much did we drink last night?

The night before the two leaders from Detroit had dinner with Don Jimmy in Philly. Although Zoey usually only drank a few glasses of wine with dinner the guys talked her into drinking more with them. They started drinking shots of tequila and she tried to keep up with them shot for shot. She had never drank so much alcohol in her life.

"Settle down, Zoey. Stop being a drama queen." Mickey mumbled as he stood up. He went across the room and put a cigarette in his mouth as he sat down to put his shoes on. Zoey couldn't believe he smoked as soon as he woke up and he didn't appear to be as hungover as she was. As he sat next to the table on the other side of the room he continued mumbling. "If you don't remember how we got here last night I guess you don't remember the rest of the night?"

Zoey was embarrassed to admit it, but she shook her head and sighed. She liked Mickey, but he wasn't exactly her type. As she looked across the room at him she struggled with the right words to question him.

Did we... I mean, what did we... um, I don't remember anything.

Mickey laughed and put his cigarette in the ashtray on the table. Zoey was annoyed at him for laughing at her. She wanted to throw something at him, but the only thing within her reach was the lamp on the table next to the bed. She was hungover and confused, but not stupid. Injuring him would be hard to explain to Marietta when they went home to Detroit.

"Get your mind out of the gutter. Nothing happened." Mickey was still laughing as he talked. He stood up and picked up his coat. "There's a bar downstairs next to the lobby. Lets go check it out."

Still sitting on the bed Zoey was relieved they didn't do anything crazy the night before. She stood up and shook her head at Mickey.

I'm never drinking with you again. Go enjoy yourself in the bar. I'm going to take a shower. I'll meet you outside in front of the hotel in a hour. Don't be late. I don't want to miss our flight home.

Exactly one hour later Zoey was outside waiting for Mickey. She looked at her watch for the third time and sighed. She was about to walk back in the hotel to pull her associate out of the bar, but felt a tap on her shoulder. She turned around and saw a young man standing there. With her hand rested on the gun in her coat pocket Zoey greeted him.

Hello

Awesome gazed into the face of the woman standing before him. A hand lay hidden within the folds of her coat pocket. The subtleties were not lost on him. Ooh, I wonder if that's a gun. Probably not a water pistol. Or an orange. Not many people carry water pistols and oranges around with them. Especially not rich-looking and powerful-appearing people. Would seem a little strange. Awesome fondled the bulge in his pocket. He was starting to feel a little hungry and decided to succumb to temptation. Reaching into his pocket he takes out the orange, and with the other hand in the other pocket, his knife with which to cut it up.

"Just an orange. Hungry, see? Oh, and hello. I'm Awesome. Pleasure to meet you."

Awesome puts the orange in his mouth to spare a hand free for a handshake, which he readily extends to her in welcome. He looks a bit like a chipmunk. Not a very intimidating look at all. But then he's not a very intimidating-looking person in general. Looks innocent and naive, to be honest. And he is. But in a guilty kind of way.

The Don from Detroit didn't judge a book by it's cover, but with one look at the young man in front of her she sensed he was one of her kind, a criminal. She wondered what his specialty was, drugs, mugging or killing? Maybe all of them.

If you're looking for work there's someone inside you should meet. Follow me.

With the man walking a few feet behind her Zoey went into the hotel. She lead him through the lobby to the bar. It didn't surprise her to find Mickey sitting on a bar stool with his hand comfortably rested on a half empty glass in front of him. Zoey checked the time on her watch then approached her associate.

Mickey, we're going to miss our flight. I'll call and reschedule us on a later flight. First class tickets you'll be paying for, of course.

With a gesture to the young man near her The Don continued talking.

This is Awesome. I think we should take him home with us.

Mickey barely glanced at Awesome before he complained to Zoey. "For crying out loud, Zo. You make him sound like a stray animal."

Zoey smirked at Mickey and pointed to an empty table nearby.

Shut up and buy us a round. We'll be waiting over there.

The woman led Awesome into a bar and over to an empty table, meeting a man somewhere in between. Busily eating his orange with glee, Awesome didn't register much of this. He just kind of followed along blindly as he often does. Mostly ends up with him falling over things, or if he's lucky, walking into people. He wasn't so lucky today. It seemed those in the bar were avoiding either the woman, or the other man, or even maybe himself. They seemed nervous. Or scared. But he didn't notice much. He was too busy eating his orange. When they reached the table, Awesome took a seat. And by a sheer luck of coincidence, finished eating his orange. It was good.

"Yum. That was good. I like oranges. Right. What was it that I wanted? Oh, yes. I remember."

Awesome looked up at the woman sat in front of him and tried to adopt a serious expression. It didn't suit him well. No doubt this showed. But surely the effort enough should count in his favour.

"I'm new to this city. And to this way of life, to be honest. You, though, look kind of established. I can't see you affording clothes like that on a legitimate salary. Especially you being a woman and all. So, I was hoping you might help me out. Give me a place to stay, perhaps? Protect me from the bad people, maybe? And, of course, those goody two-shoes police fellows? It would be so nice and lovely. Awesome likes nice and lovely things."

Awesome looked at the woman expectingly. And then thought about those children down by the docks and wondered hopefully if any of them had succeeded in falling over the edge and into the water. Would be a funny sight, as is usually the plight of the young and timid.

I like nice and lovely things too, like rainbows and kittens.

Zoey impatiently strummed her fingers on the table as she waited for Mickey to bring drinks to the table. He finally walked up with a martini for her and glasses of scotch for himself and Awesome. As he sat down Zoey took a sip of her drink and continued talking to Awesome.

If you're interested in working for us Mickey can give you a home and protection.

After another sip of her martini Zoey picked up Mickey's pack of cigarettes off the table and took a cigarette out.

What can you offer us for our protection? We expect our members to work hard for us. You take care of us and we take care of you, understood?

A look of happiness spread across Awesome's face as he heard Zoey's provisional acceptance on behalf of Mickey. He rubbed his hands together in glee.

"Why, that would be most awesome, Miss Zoey. I would feel all good inside if I were to work with and for Mr. Mickey and his family."

He took out his wallet and counted all the cash he had stored away. There were lots and lots and lots of notes. It was good to hold such a large amount of money. He felt rich. T'was a nice feeling.

"Well, as for what I can offer; good, hard, honest thievery. Well, as honest as thievery can be. I'm good at it, too. Why, in just over 27 hours I've made just over $50,000. From stealing alone. I could make much much more when I begin to deal in drugs. And even more when I start committing even more serious crimes. Oh, and I love to kill things. So that might come in handy some time. And I think I'd be a pretty face and an even prettier mouth for the family. I have, after all, a lack of shyness. Why, I've been shouting my mouth off everywhere! The streets, the back alleys, the bar district, and even the jail! I'll talk for hours on everything and nothing. And do it with a smile on my face and an orange in my hand."

Awesome's head begins to sway from side to side as if to music. But without the music. He just has lots of energy and likes to dance. Anywhere and everywhere.
