Cards on the Table Started by: Marietta on Dec 11, '08 23:06
Marietta steps out onto the streets, picking her favorite corner between her favorite two streets in Detroit. She pulls her coat closer to her and shivers from cold as Pedro uses his foot to scoot a soapbox to the prime spot. Flanked by many of her other associates, the Godmother turns to smile at Aurora, Zoey, Mickey and Thomas before stepping up onto the box. Only a small crowd gathers, most of the population hiding in their apartments and headquarters to stay warm from the winter's weather.

Hello! she called as brightly as she could muster, her throat erupting into a stinging sensation and sending a wave of pain through her body. Ah, my apologies for not getting out here sooner. I know that it's often protocol to grant the public with a speech after an occurrence such as a war or take-down, but I've been rather under the weather. The blond woman smiled, sniffling a bit in demonstration before crossing her arms across her chest.

We're not here to discuss my flu, however. I've heard the cry for an explanation on the matter of Philly and New Orleans so I am here to give it. I suppose it's best to just start from the beginning.

Pausing briefly she turned her head to glance once more at her associates for affirmation before facing the mobsters before her.

First and foremost I'll start by saying Mane was not a horrible leader. No, he was not removed from his position for "being a bad crew head" or "being a threat". The decision to have him killed was not one that was deliberated over for weeks on end, so all of you conspiracy theorists can fork over whatever money you owe on whatever bets you made over this instance of war.

Mane was given his chance to run a family; that much I can say with true honesty. His bloodline was one that had wished for auth long and hard, and when we were left with an open spot to fill in an open city I talked to several people, including the late Bi-Polar_Bear, before we all made the decision to put him up in Philly next to Jimmy. At last he had his shot, and boy was he ever eager. A little too eager at times, one might say.

I looked the other way when he did things to annoy me, such as question my family's wealth statuses and allowing members that were becoming threats to the community to remain alive were just some instances of little annoyances over the man's reign that rubbed me the wrong way. Perhaps I was too harsh or being too much of a perfectionist, so I merely shook my head, chalked things up to inexperience, and went along my way.

It was a little over a week ago that I started getting people coming up to me over my morning newspaper and muffin, telling me different tales of how Mane was looking to war Los Angeles over some flippant comments made in the coffee shops, and how he and his cohorts were trying to create bad blood between New York and Las Vegas. Now, I'm usually not one to buy into the masses and the rumors. I've been around long enough to know better than to get involved. It was when Mane himself approached me, as well as a few other well known Mob Bosses to confirm the stories, that I started to get a strange feeling about the man. Yet 'bad feelings' alone were not a good enough reason to remove the man from society. So I left it alone, despite the sinking sensation that leaving him alive would plunge half of Crime, USA into peril.

Marietta paused, glancing over at Zoey and nodding her head towards the woman before continuing.

Then how did Zoey and myself arrive at the decision to war? I suppose that brings us to the part of the story you're all wondering (or care) about.

It seemed he and his fellow Brotherly Love associate were intent on taking out New Orleans. Yet Jimmy felt off about something, 'weird' as he stated it at the time, so came to me for my counsel. My aim has always been to support what was best for the community and the members within, so I gave him my honest answer and told him I didn't feel it was a wise move, seeing as how that would leave a hole in New Orleans that we would then have to fill- funny how things worked out in the end, eh? This was, by no means, my way of 'controlling the masses' or 'being Godmother of every city'. A man, my friend and a life-long friend to my bloodline, asked me for my advice and I gave it to him. I did not in any way fault neither him nor his partner in Philly Mane for their decision, nor did I try to sway them in either direction. Jimmy made his decision to call things off, and things went seemingly back to normal.

However, the next day my beloved associate Zoey approached me and told me of a conversation she had with Mane earlier that morning. It seemed he was quite angry with me for 'interfering' with their war plans, and even divulged that he was still planning on taking out Dante_Balboni and his associates, and had even started speaking about authing one of our own Riot/Ruthless associates in his stead without even a nod from myself or Don Zoey prior. That being the 'last straw' for me, piled on top of all my other annoyances, I decided to take a stand. Tired of hearing every other day that he was going to war someone new and now compiled with his angry rant towards my trusted friend that I was nothing better than a tyrant too busy 'policing the Seven Cities', Zoey and I took the information to Dante. We were hoping that having a forewarning would prove to foil Don Mane's plans, or at least surprise him and knock some sense into the kid.

In a sense this sort of kindness backfired on us. Instead of the reaction we had hoped for, being a relieved Balboni at having warning of a coming attack, we learned that the man instead approached Mane about these allegations. Mane instantly denied all knowledge of an attack and pit the blame on us, insinuating we were liars and were making up the entire farce. We learned, only moments later from a reliable source, that the two were 'plotting' something in the coffee shops and in other venues to get back at us. Amidst all the asinine rumors about us creating some giant plan to manipulate Philly into attacking New Orleans so we had a reason to kill the Don, Zoey and I merely looked at each other and sighed. Good for the community or not, we knew we then had to kill Mane for the sake of our own peace of mind. Many often say 'being dead is bad for business', and if the former Don of Philly and the Consig of New Orleans had mounted an attack against us it would've been bad for Detroit's business indeed.

Lowering her head in a gesture of mourning, she heard a clearing of someone's throat from behind her. Looking up once more the green-eyed woman blinked several times, trying to recollect her thoughts.

So that's where we left off in the early morning hours of the tenth. When it was all over and done with the Motor City took stock of what we had lost- and some damn good people we lost indeed. All because Dante_Balboni had chosen to take what was a gesture of kindness and twist it into some sort of ploy for war in Mane's favor; he even continued fostering rumors about our moment of goodwill towards him and his family. Knowing it was he who put our family and city into jeopardy, we had no choice but to remove him and the Devil's Advocates from New Orleans, despite my usual standing on keeping the community in balance and my personal liking towards the man before this point.

Marietta sighs, shrugging her shoulders and gesturing helplessly.

So there it is. Cards are on the table. There was nothing glamorous behind all this. I haven't grown a case of dementia (yet), nor was I gun happy. It is what it is. Take it or leave it. Thank you for your time.

Marietta steps down from the soapbox, kicking at it briefly before stumbling off to join Aurorahrah and Zoey, Thomas and Mickey following behind them slowly and Rourkishly.

I 1%'ed yer nan.

You mean to say, that this WHOLE time, i was convinced that this was about Sebastian? What a cruel thing to make us all think! Just playing Marietta, excellent reasons for the takedown(s) although you shouldn't have to explain yourself.
Report Post Tip
Thank you for this clarification.

We needed to understand all the fuss that happened
Report Post Tip
Damn, your straight beats my pair! You win again...
Report Post Tip
I TOLD YOU SHE WOULD MAKE A WHOLE CRAZY STORY ABOUT IT!

Admit it Marietta! This was all a ploy! To get me into Detroit!
Report Post Tip
You're really pushing that whole "WARS ON ME!" thing aren't you Sebastian?

Phantom smiles

Gambino took off his hat in a show of respect as he approached the Godmother. He offered her a handkerchief for her sniffles and a flash of good whiskey to cure that aching throat.

"Thank you for coming out here Marietta. You certainly didn't have to, especially in this weather and with that cold."
He placed the returned flask back inside his coat pocket, put his hat back on and tipped it to all in salute.

"If you'll excuse me, I have a flight to catch back to sunny Vegas."

I am Phantom. Let me have my moment in the sun!

Seems to be fair enough. In the end we did lose a few more families than would have been nice but hey. Gotta protect your own above anything else.

Ha, dear Skorpean and his comment in the coffeeshops. When my dear old dad seen then he didn't think much of them but well guess they proved his demise. But since I'm here I'll add a little to your clear up. What Dear old Dad found out is that Jimmy was the one who wished to war Dante and brought Mane in on it. Yes he called it off but still he was the one instigated it all. As I said to you privately it's not that my Da didn't believe you and Zoey, he just didn't feel that he was getting, how shall I say it all the cards?

Now don't get me wrong, I'm not gonna complain about dear old dad dieing, he was well past his sell by date. But dear Godfather please when your going to spin a tail to the masses do try and be sure that you have all the facts, that private conversation that Dad had with Mane, well plotting no getting to the truth a little. Laughing mostly about other worldly stuff that was the main bit.
Report Post Tip
Manes demise was one i was for and agaisnt. You mentioned him not taking out threats to the community when he wasn't the only one not doing his job there are many others. I know I am just a petty gangster and not one of you will take my opinion but there was and still are bigger fish to fry than Mane.
Report Post Tip
Hears his name being brought into the situation at hand

"Skellington, Did I hear you say my name? What did I ever have to do with this?"
Report Post Tip
Doubling back, and curing at herself for walking away in the first place when obviously she should've stuck around to answer a few queries or two, she smiled at Jack_Skellington and clasped her hands together.

Spin the tale in my direction? Leave some things out? Sir, if you had listened to my entire speech I had mentioned it was JimmyTheLionHeart who had brought it up first. I'm not denying that incident. In fact I spent a good chunk of my delivery on that point. Still, I suppose I speak so much you simply just dozed off during that portion.

In regard to my 'getting all the facts', there was no possible way for me to confirm or deny what happened during that conversation of Don Mane's and Consigliere Dante's. In fact, unless I dig them both up and reanimate them to ask them myself, I highly doubt anyone will know what was said. However, at the time, a few reliable sources passed on information of their secret meetings, and in light of the situation Zoey and I put two and two together as to what the subject of matter was. I'm sure had we known that they were just 'laughing about other worldly stuff' we wouldn't call the whole darn thing off. Unfortunately we took a stab in the dark and moved quickly to protect our own.

As for the 'Skorpeon' comment, which has now piqued the man's interested himself, while I'm sure he's a fine mobster in his own rights he wasn't one of these reliable sources I speak of. No offense, Skorpeon, I'm sure you understand. Many apologies.

Marietta smiles once more, unfolding her hands and instead putting them behind her back, crossing her wrists and rocking back and forth upon the balls of her feet. She knew better than to try and leave again, silly woman she had been in the first place.
Report Post Tip
Ah well Godfather I'll say one more thing to you and then I'm off. Through out his time Dante was always open with you on matters that you discussed even though these were rare occasions. If you'd have asked you'd have got the truth as always.

Shame that you and Zoey were so quick to talk to him about his family being in risk, yet when certain parties came you decided to take a stab in the dark.

As for yourself Skorpean, my apologise.
Report Post Tip
Skorpeon listens to the responces

"Marietta, I completely understand. Who could rely on me?" He says with a smile "Your still my co-tyrant!"

"As for Skellington, His father didn't like my ancestors, therefor he is trying to use anything he can to get me a bad reputation. I am simply here to earn my respect, as for what was said, it quiet frankly was a joke and I know for a fact they didn't take what I said into consideration.

So please don't try to blame the WHOLE thing on me Skelly. I mean, even if they did believe me, you saying the rest of what our Godmother has said is my fault to? I don't think so."
Report Post Tip
As skorpeon gets all bent out of sorts, he realizes something

"Sorry I was so bent out of shape, I didn't hear you apologize. I accept your apology and wish nothing more should happen beyond this point."
Report Post Tip
I believe the most important point in this entire discussion was overlooked. My nan was 1%'d and now I am aware of the culprit's identity!
Report Post Tip
Who was your nan, and what makes them so important Mr RourkeyRourke!
Report Post Tip
Swoll listens to the explanation and nods his head

You must always protect your own. I am wondering about these threats to the community that you spoke of, however. I did not notice any hostility from any members of Mane's family, but then I keep to my own family. What was the assumption based on that these people were threats?
