Govt Shutdown Started by: _Izzy_ on Oct 04, '13 03:16
So the US govt is currently shut down.

Republicans and Democrats couldn't agree on a spending plan for the fiscal year that started Tuesday as they wrangled over Obamacare, leaving federal coffers short.

Why did the government shut down?Congress has one key duty in the Constitution pass spending bills that fund the government. If it doesn't, most functions of government from funding agencies to paying out small business loans and processing passport requests grinds to a halt. But some services, like Social Security, air traffic control and active military pay, will continue to be funded. Oh, and Congress still gets paid, too ain't that some shit.

What was the holdup?House Republicans insist any new spending bill include provisions to either defund, derail or otherwise chip away at Obamacare. Senate Democrats are just as insistent that it doesn't.
So how is Obama care tied?
The health care law isn't directly tied to funding the government, but it's being used as a bargaining chip. A group of Republicans, led by freshman Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, believe the president's signature domestic policy achievement is so bad for the country that it is worth disrupting government funding to undercut it.

.What are some of the objections to Obamacare? The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, the actual name of the law, requires all Americans to have health insurance. Opponents say it'll hurt employers and amounts to overreach by the federal government. Some have also criticized the medical device tax that's part of the law, saying that by imposing such a tax, it's basically sending jobs overseas. Though in my opinion it was happening anyway.
What's the Democrats' defense? They say the law will expand access to health care and help rein in the rising costs of coverage. Obamacare prevents those with pre-existing medical conditions from being denied health insurance, and proponents say those who have health insurance will no longer have to indirectly pay for those who show up in emergency rooms uninsured.
What happened with the spending bill over the weekend? The Republican-dominated House passed two spending bill amendments Sunday morning -- one that would delay Obamacare for a year and one that would repeal the Obamacare's medical device tax. The bill went back to the Senate, where Democrats who control that chamber have consistently said any changes to Obamacare would be a deal-killer.
What happened Monday? The Senate rejected the latest House proposal, prompting the House to approve another spending plan that would remove the Obamacare individual mandate. The Senate rejected that, too, setting the stage for a shutdown.

congress still gets paid for being shit as a whole?

well isn't that low

Has this happened before?Yes, this shutdown is the first since late 1995. That one lasted 21 days, into 1996.
So this is as much I could keep up with. Sounds like we have a pickle with over 800, 000 people now sitting at Home not being able to draw checks. Countless govt services and sid cut off. Have you been affected and what are your thoughts.

Isn't there another matter ummm the debt ceiling?Ah yes, that's the next battle brewing. Remember that time when you maxed out your credit card? That's what the debt limit is all about. The U.S. is on the verge of maxing out its $16.699 trillion credit card. And the president must ask Congress to raise the country's credit limit. But the debt ceiling debacle won't come to a head until October 17.Then we can say " boy we sure have a pickle here" Perhaps it's best to deal with one showdown at a time.

wonder how many generations will be covering that debt

Lol quite a bit man
Report Post Tip

we have the same debt problem in UK, but whichever party is in power the bill still goes up for some and down for others, both ways ending up in debt and unemployment

Report Post Tip
How bad is the uk debt? And who is yalls lender? Like most of o ur debt is owed to china.
And I just....it baffles me how people haven't been impeached or shit out of congress these are the same people in Obama's, bushes, and further era. And they have seem to do nothing but cause woes. I don't think its right that you can be in congress until you die. It should be limited to terms.

The leeches and rightfully disabled are still collecting checks. Shutdowns have never affected ssi or welfare recipients dramatically. Federal parks and landmarks are suffering the most, along with federal employees who are not deemed 'necessary' or vital to everyday operations.
Report Post Tip

about 1.377 trillion and spread all over.  we didnt finish paying our ww2 debt till 2006

Report Post Tip

Looks like many governments are having trouble nowadays. The US government has shutdown. Next, a 10 billion peso pork barrel scam was just unearthed here in the Philippines.

Report Post Tip

Why point to the Republicans? It is still Congress and both parties are equally responsible for what is being funded and what is not going to be funded. Im so tired of the "he did it" mentality that the political theater puts on. All they do is write law, they only have 1 job. Im tired of this looming fiscal cliff and government shut down bullshit. You dont do your job, we go to the polls and elect people who can. Fuck the name calling, fuck the blame game. They have 1 fucking job, do it or you are fired.

Now when foreigners tell me my government sucks, I can say What Government?!?!?! lol

On a serious note, Obama Care is the worst bullshit I can think of at the moment. I wish the idiot would get out of the White House and stay gone.

Not quite the same problem. Our Parliament isn't so bizarrely organised that different parties control different legislative branch. Can you imagine if Labour had the power to say to the coalition 'no, we're not giving you funding until you drop education reform/nhs reform/tax pledges/revised committment to the EU'? It would be insane. Parliament would be in near constant revolt.

At the end of the day, I'm hearing all of this blame laid at the door of the Democrats but as an impartial observer I see absolutely no reason why Obama's administration or the Dmocrats in the Senate should cave to petulant, self-serving ransom demands from fringe lunatics in the House who are perverting the GOP as a whole and who are patently not acting in the interests of the people.

1. Obamacare was a central issue in the 2012 election, that really can't be denied. The 2012 election was a magnificent opportunity for the American people to have their say on Obamacare; and he was voted in with well over 300 electoral votes and the biggest % of the popular vote (not including his own in '08) since Bush senior in '88. I will agree that some people may have voted for Obama despite Obamacare; but the fact is that Obamacare wasn't such a big issue to the American people that it kept him out of the Whitehouse for another term. Even if people were saying 'Eh, I don't like Obama care...but he's better than Romney so I'll vote for him' may indicate a disapproval for the Bill, it doesn't indicate such a strong disapproval that justifies the Republicans dragging out the shutdown to pursue their own ridiculous agenda.

2. The figures agree with me. Whilst the support for Obamacare is pretty polarised, 72% of people oppose the shuttering of Government to block health care reform; and support for congressional Republicans is at 17% with over half of people who identify themselves as Republicans not in support of their actions in the house. I'm not certain, but I think that is the lowest figures have ever been.

the difference in uk cantona, is just block voting on an idea, where even cameron has been shamed by his own party struggling pushing something through or failing where he doesn't have cross party support on some issues especially with a shaky coalition.
