Sometimes he cursed his upbringing.Today was one of those days. His Daddy taught him that the early bird gets the worm get the worm and made sure he learned that lesson good. Now no matter how hard he tried to sleep in...come 6am he was out of bed and dressed. Here in the Suburbs of Chicago it doesn't get light until after seven and he didn't see the railroad tie sticking out of the truck until he banged his knee into it. JohnnyNoSocks hobbled down the the dimly lit street toward his first stop of the day. He just didn't feel right if his fancy italian loafers didn't have a good shine. He sidled up to the stool, thankful for an opportunity to sit for a moment.
"Morning kid, can I get a get a good shine on these shoes?" Johnny Said.
"Sure Mister, why ya limpin'?" replied Tommy while skillfully applying polish.
"It's nothin' kid, just a bruise, and the names Johnny" explained Johnny.
"Can I ask you a question Mister?" Tommy timidly said.
"Sure, but only if you use my name and not Mister" replied Johnny with a stern look.
"Mist...err...Johnny, why do wear no socks?" Tommy asked with his face turning red.
Johnny laughed heartily."Well, let me tell you kid...I wear no socks as a way to pay respect to my betters. Whether they deserve it or not, it is a price well worth paying. If you learn that lesson kid you will go a long way in life."
Johnny stood as his shoes were shined to perfection. He flipped a coin to kid.
"besides" Johnny said "it looks so damned good!"
Tommy caught the coin and smiled as it was 3 times what he normally got for a shine.
"Thanks Johnny....JohnnyNoSocks!"
Johnny smiled and limped toward his next stop. It was going to be a busy day.
