A Tale of Two Cons Started by: Kizzy on Nov 08, '13 23:59

Kizzy hung out the window, watching the crowd below. She was looking for just the right sort of guy...no, that one's too old, but certainly well-dressed enough...She might do, but looks like the type to scream for the cops at any moment...Oh, there!

She slipped away from the window and hurried down the stairs, her fingertips barely gliding against the railing in her rush. She burst out of the door and swung her head around, looking for her mark. There—black suit, top hat...and that incredible mustache. She walked to him briskly, a warm smile hitching itself onto her face. She touched his arm gently, but it was enough to make him stop and turn around. She startled and blushed.

“Oh, I apologize, sir...I thought you were...well, my banker has that exact same suit, and I needed to talk to him about...” She swallowed, tears prickling in her eyes. “I'm sorry, it's...well, just my sister is sick, and I so badly need to talk to him about lending me money, but he's been avoiding me since I...God, I'm sorry, sir. I just...got my hopes up for...for nothing.” She pulled out an appropriately ragged silk handkerchief out of her purse and wiped her eyes, smearing her mascara. She watched the man from the corner of her eye. He wasn't the type to get flustered, like some men. Good. Those men usually just patted her awkwardly, told her it would be all right, and walked off quickly. No, no, she needed to intrigue them. And this man did seem intrigued. He was raising a single eyebrow and watching her carefully. She gave him a weak smile and dabbed at her nose daintily.

“Well...maybe you could help me, all the same. I...I have a little jewelry shop, I took it over from my parents last year. I promise we sell only the highest quality jewels—you can examine them yourself.” She managed a wet but somewhat flirtatious smile. “After all, you seem like the type that's able to lavish a little gold and diamonds on the women in your life.”

Snidely was minding his own business, fretting over the previous days events as he made his way down the street. He'd lost out a nice chunk of change gambling at an underground casino his buddy owned, and he was looking for a way to recoup his losses. Just as he was about to turn around and head to the bar, he felt a light touch on his arm.

Turning around, he saw a lovely young woman who seemed quite upset about something. Not having to wait very long at all to find out what it was, Snidely listened to the woman's tale of woe.

Twirling his mustache contemplatively, he shrugged his shoulders and decided it couldn't hurt to at least pretend to help the girl out. She was very good looking, after all... But would she fall for it? Only time would tell.

Getting the plan all ready in his head, Snidely smiled warmly to the woman and stuck his hand out, introducing himself,

"Why, what an awfully upsetting story to hear, m'lady. My name is Snidely, Snidely Whiplash. I'd be absolutely delighted to peruse this shop of yours that you speak of, if only you'd tell me your name?"

She took his hand, sniffling softly as she shook it. "I'm...well, just call me Nell, sir." She blushed as he pulled her hand up to his mouth and kissed it. He was hardly a handsome man--a huge nose and jutting chin prevented that--but he had a clear charm to him. Despite herself, Kizzy felt her stomach get populated with a few butterflies. She slipped her hand out of his, looked at the ground and blushed some more for effect before motioning to the storefront down the street.

"I'm right down there. Fenwick's Watches and Jewelry. Just come with me and I'll be happy to show you some fine jewelry, Mr. Whiplash." She led him quickly through the crowd, using light pressure on his elbow to make sure he didn't slip into the crowd. She let him hold the door open for her, then motioned toward the cases of glittering, fabulously exquisite pieces. "I'll let you have some time to look for what you like. Just get my attention when you're ready to look closer at something."

The faintest hint of a smirk flashed across his face at the parting line from...Nell, did she say? There was, of course, "something" he'd like to take a better look at, but that would come later. Snidely tried kidding himself that he was only trying to get her to do sexy poses to make some money, but in all actuality she was quite good looking. As she walked into the back, he couldn't help but do a classic over-the-shoulder glance.

Taking a look around the shop, Snidely's eyes lit up like those of an owl having just spotted a plump mouse in a field. The arrangement on one shelf alone was enough to blow his mind; gold watches, chains, and necklaces. Gold really wasn't his thing though, so he decided to keep examine some of the other collections. The sapphires were nice, but they seemed like something his grandmother would've worn. No, no, that wouldn't do at all either he thought as his eyes glimpsed over a pearl necklace.

Hoping Nell wouldn't mind, Snidely lit a cigarette and continued his quest. He'd have to find something in his price range, to leave enough wiggle room for her to still pocket money while leaving himself enough space to still pull his scam off. Just as he was about to give up, his eyes spotted a white silver ring inlaid with the deepest red ruby he'd ever seen. Immediately he knew that there was absolutely no way any other item in the shop could appease him as much as this little beauty.

Clearing his throat, he raised his voice slightly and leaned over the counter.

"Ma'am? Miss...Nell? I think I've found the item that I'd like to purchase"

Kizzy peeked into the shop with a grin. He was hovering near one of the more high-end cases. Perfect. She restrained her grin into a weak smile and stepped behind the counter he was looking at.

"What did you have in mind, sir?"

When he motioned to the very modern ruby silver ring, she couldn't suppress the broad smile that crossed her face.

"Oh, of course sir! It really is a beauty--" She kept speaking as she chose a key from a small keyring and unlocked the case. "Very much in fashion, you know. I love how it looks like there are fans circling it, don't you think?" She pulled out the ring in question and set it gently on the counter for him.

Snidely twirled the ring in his finger, wondering how much this little beauty would cost him. He wasn't terribly concerned with the price, he knew he'd recuperate the cost of it when he convinced Nell to model for him. Turning to her with a smile on his face, Snidely asks

"Well, how much will this piece of beauty run me?"

Waiting for her response, Snidely inches closer to her and rests his hand on the counter, inches away from hers. She really was quite attractive, he didn't know how he'd gotten so lucky to run into her. Looking into her eyes, Snidely puts his best innocent face on.

"I want it no matter the cost, really. I'd also like to see how it looks on you, if you wouldn't mind?"

Snidely picks the ring up and holds it in his palm, awaiting her answer. He knew she would accept the offer, almost any woman would. Hoping that the ring would fit, Snidely formulates the rest of his plan. Perhaps if she was pleased enough with how it looked on her, he could convince her to wear it in a photo-shoot.

Of course Nell would have to make a large down payment for these pictures...But little did she know, she'd never see anything in return. His intentions weren't noble, and it almost pained him to be stealing from such a lovely woman. But as they say, money will prevail.

A real charmer, this one. And a sucker. Kizzy smoothed a smile over her face as she slipped the ring onto her right ring finger, explaining with a level, calm voice that bespoke years of expertise on the subject of jewelry.

"Well, this is actually a great ring for somebody with my skin complexion--the red really pops out against the pale skin. If your lady is more of a swarthy type, of course, the silver does the same job. A beautiful bit of flash for a romantic evening out, either way." She models the ring for him, making sure it catches the light just right. "This will run you..." She ran her gaze up and down the man somewhat furtively, calculating almost instantly how much she could charge him. "$55. That's almost what I bought it for. I mean--" She looked down demurely "If you bought it for even that, I would be able to cover my sister's doctor bills that have been piling up.
