A silent promise Started by: Telkin on Dec 03, '13 02:28
Telkin stood watching his cousin Snidely from afar. He didn't want people knowing they were related, with the nature of his cousins "job". Snidely had invited Telkin over to dinner a few months previous and explained to him what it was he did. Telkin was never a fan of the choices that Snidely had made, but when he'd heard that his cousin had reached Don, a milestone that had escaped his bloodline for eons, Telkin had to go and see the celebration.

There were groups and groups of people milling about, enjoying the party that Snidely had arranged. Carts with free popcorn and hotdogs were being pushed around by the hired help. Bottles upon bottles of booze were being opened and quickly consumed. Streamers were being thrown from the back of the crowd, covering the people who'd come to congratulate Snidely in colorful bits of paper. Telkin had just taken a step forward to speak with his cousin when he heard the shot. BANG! Most of the people didn't react in any other way except drawing their guns, aware of the war that was currently taking place. Telkin didn't know what to do so he hit the ground and covered his head. He felt it a reasonable response, and had decided to stay in that position until he was absolutely positive the shooter was no longer there.

Seconds passed by, feeling like years. Then minutes. Slowly Telkin lifted his head and saw that most of the people who'd previously been celebrating were now gone, presumably to resume their war and avenge his cousin. Telkin couldn't help but to cry. The noises of his sobbing muffled the footsteps that echoed behind him. He barely had time to start turning his head when quite abruptly, a burlap sack was placed over it. Squirming to get free Telkin began to kick his legs, but whoever his attacker was knew better. They must have been standing to the side, because none of Telkin's kicks landed.

"Get yourself together," a rough voice said, removing the sack from Telkin's head. Telkin looked up and tried to identify the man, but he had no such luck. He knew he should've stayed away from Snidely. He knew that he'd wind up in a bad spot. He never imagined witnessing his cousins death and being kidnapped, though. Trying to take in even breaths, Telkin spoke with a shaky voice,

"What...What is it you want from me?" Telkin managed to mutter, before the man burst into laughter. The man smiled broadly and responded eagerly

"I want you to follow in Snidely's footsteps. He's told us here at Dunder Mifflin about your natural talents as a thief, and how good you are at the casinos. We could use someone like you amongst our ranks. In return, we can offer you protection."

Telkin scoffed and if looks could kill, the glare he shot in the strangers direction would have left him dead on the floor. Right, like they could offer him protection. They couldn't even keep Snidely alive in a large group of people.

"As if! You couldn't even protect Snidely on his brightest day!" Telkin spit back venomously.

"You need to understand, there are definitely risks to joining this style of life. But the rewards...Ohhh the rewards. You ever wonder how Snidely afforded that new apartment, and that car? All money he made via working for us. Those bodyguards he liked to walk around with? Funded out of his pocket, with the money he made running crimes for us. Join us. Surpass his greatness if you dare, and we will reward you beyond your wildest dreams." The man said softly, with a twinkle in his eye.

Telkin believed him, too. He couldn't deny the idea of joining Dunder Mifflin wasn't a good one. It certainly had made Snidely happy the last few months. And my goodness, he thought...the money! Looking up to the man, he debated. Sure there was danger, as Snidely's death had proven, but the mental list of pros to cons was leaning heavily in the favor of accepting the mans offer.

It was on that day Telkin decided solemnly to surpass Snidely. Someday cousin, Telkin silently swore to himself, I will get Don just like you did. I will join the family you helped shape, and I will gain their trust. I will carry out crimes in your memory, Whiplash. And I will make you proud. I promise.
