Awesome is Burning Bridges Started by: Awesome on Dec 28, '08 08:25
It was just before dawn, one miserable morning in black '34. Awesome was looking beyond the embers of a bridge glowing before him. A distant ship's smoke on the horizon. He was encumbered as always by desire and ambition. And that desire and ambition had led him to burning down the bridge to the docks. Yes. He had burnt down the bridge to the docks. Oh noes. What had urged him to commit such an extreme deed? Well, his desire and ambition, duh. I did say. And he liked to set fire to things. I know it's usually people, but he's not fussy. Well, not too fussy. So, there he was. Having burnt down the bridge to the docks. His eyes were shining and his mouth was smiling. Never before had he been the cause of such destruction. He'd burnt houses and children and the occasional animal, but never before such a construction as a bridge. And not just a bridge; the cars on the bridge, and the people inside them. It truly was a horrifically awesome event.

He could hear the sounds of sirens in the distance. Police cars, and fire engines, and ambulances coming to the rescue. Reporters swarming in. The enthralled public watching with a mixture of sadness, fright, and excitement. Awesome found this fascinating. That (sane) people could be so callous. He had once watched as a crowd gathered beneath a building upon the top of which a young boy stood. Whilst most of the crowd were attempting to reason with the boy -- have him step away from the edge -- a significant minority had urged him on. And on the boy had gone. Over the edge and into the floor. It was a mess. Awesome liked it, of course. Being a crazy person and all. But those who had bullied the boy into jumping? Well, they were as normal as anyone. Just goes to show, eh? There's a very thin line between the human conscience and an insane morality.

Awesome himself had retreated back to the nearby park, atop a hilltop. To witness the scene in its entirety. The light. The heat. The sound. It was an atmosphere to behold. Nothing quite like it. He had always hoped to leave his mark upon the world. But he hadn't thought that that mark would be quite so literal. True, his name would not be recorded and remembered. He wasn't going to go public with this. He wasn't stupid. Just crazy. But, he had his whole life ahead of him. Plenty of time in which to secure a pseudo-immortality. Even if he died trying. I would like to say that the irony of this position wasn't lost on Awesome. But it was. He was, after all, a very naive and oblivious kind of guy. Like a child, really. Albeit a psychologically-chaotic and psychotic child. But a child nonetheless.

For a few hours Awesome sat there. Just watching and thinking. Thinking and watching. Slowly but surely, the flames died. The crowds dispersed. But the rubble remained. The river had come to a halt. Boats could neither leave nor arrive. They were in a right pickle. Awesome's weary eyes strayed to the horizon. Into the distance a ribbon of black stretched to the point of no turning back. The fire may have gone, but the smoke remained. Onwards and upwards. Tired, Awesome decided to head back home. He headed across the field, went through the gate, and then down the road he's been so many times.
Report Post Tip
Awesome, in life we burn bridges, be it for better or worse. Sounds like the bridge you burned today, left quite a cloud in its wake. Will this cloud clear do you think?
Report Post Tip
This cloud will clear, but this city will remember this dark day forever and ever more. Never shall this be forgotten. It'll be considered a turning point in history. The day the world stood still. The war on organized crime will soon commence. Because the authorities know that the perpetrator was a member of an organized crime syndicate. Because said perpetrator left a note for the police to read. Stating that he is a member of an organized crime syndicate. True story.
Report Post Tip
So this perpetrator, left this world, and took with him his promise to uphold our sanctity through it all, or is this man still alive?
Report Post Tip
This man is alive and is a crazy person out looking for excitement.
Report Post Tip
Well awesome, i will be sure to keep an eye out for this man you speak of.
