Don't cross the river if you cant swim. Started by: Sal_Giaquinto on Jan 01, '09 20:44
Salvatore find himself enjoying the evening, as it was the birth of a New Year and it was an appropriate time to indulge in pleasure, but nevertheless business was at hand. A festive crowd of associates and friends of ours alike, momma's fine spread and Caesar's arsenal of grapes bottled for the taken all on the table.

He considered himself one of the old guard, and apparently so did his boss, given his post. The events of the past few days and the general trends he had seen on the street and the way things have been starting to shape. It was time to say something, let it be known how he felt.

He rose from his oak seat to give a speech. With his glass in hand, he sank the bourbon down his throat and warmly smiled, opening his arms to those gathered around the table.

"My friends, here we are... another year. Time has been good to some, and well, poor to others, but we are here to do business, Our Thing is still here... It's still strong and it must remain strong."

He began to circle the table and those present.

"We have a lot of tradition, a lot of values, we have ways of running things."

He stops behind the chair of prospective associate, a civilian. His presence slightly disturbs Sal, but he doesn't reveal concerns... yet.

"You see, lately... more and more, our prospects are getting lazy, they're getting weak. Should we open the doors and eventually the books to these people, who feel they are entitled to justice, to democracy, to individuality. My friends, we've been well off, our families have been feed, but at a price, we've the sense of security a civilian has for wealth, power and respect. The fruits of Our Thing, earned by playing by the rules of Our Thing."

"What I'm saying is, you let these guys, these outsiders, know if they aren't willing to be exposed to injustice that is sometimes carried with Our Thing, they shouldn't cross that road. Essentially, Don't cross the river if you cant swim the tide..."

He reaches over and grabs himself a shrimp, dipping it in cocktail sauce, tossing it in his mouth, he quickly chews and swallows it.

"Like this shrimp, an appetizer for thought. Happy New Years."

Ares stands up and begins to applaud Signore Giaquinto. After looking around at the faces of those present, he points at Salvatore and begins to speak.

"That's absolutely correct. When our bloodlines first began here, the traditions, values, and principles of that time were driven into us. After years and years, you'd expect us to get stronger, smarter, wiser. However, it seems this world has taken an alternate path."

As Salvatore takes a seat, Ares starts to pace around the room.

"As you put it, our new prospects have become lazy. Evidence of this can be found nearly anywhere. With this disgusting new "txt" language, people have mentally and verbally degraded themselves. However, this is not the place to rant on modern failures. However, I find the lack of intelligence found in the contemporary mind to be fascinating. You see, as with most creatures of the earth today, humans should become "better" with each generation. As each generation makes a mistake, the next learns, and takes a separate path. This is how humans have reached such a great extent of technology. Enough with the history lesson though."

"We have now descended into a state of de-evolution. It is where the new generation has decided either not to listen, or the elder generations have denied teaching. In either case, the younger generation is forced to learn things "the hard way" which, more than likely, ends with failure. With each failure, the person grows annoyed with his/her current situation, and decides to try and take an easier way out. So now, we have a large group of people without even the basic knowledge of how this world works."

"As we've seen, some new people to this world believe that things should be handed to them. When people don't give the new members to our society what they want, the untrained youth becomes frustrated, and quits. This departure of mafiosi is why we have gotten to this state. The leaders noticed the depletion in workers, and decided to offer "help" to attract more. This new "help" was also a major cause in the increase of laziness throughout our world. As it became easier, people worked less, and got more for it."

"So, how can we get out of this pit of apathy? Salvatore's got it. Let the strong lead us to a thriving mafia economy, where everyone is making money, everyone has a job to do, everyone is involved. Let the strong take this world to a greater era of prosperity through those traditions, beliefs, and ideals instilled into our bloodlines from the start. As we rise up, those who "can't swim" will be rooted out, and we can finally lift the lowest members of this world with us, as we climb to new heights."

Feeling pleased with all that was said, Ares takes a few more steps around the table, grabs a small plate of shrimp and sits across from Sal.
