Moot Suit Dispute Started by: MacLeod on Jan 05, '09 00:23
Strolling down the streets, MacLeod walked past a veritable sea of important mafiosi, greeting them individually and nodding as they passed. "Sir". "Ma'm". "Sir". "Boss". "Sir". "Ma'm". "Sir". "Boss". "Ma'm". "Don". "Sir". Stopping short, MacLeod tipped back his hat and his brow furrowed in thought.

One thing I've noticed in the past few weeks, and forgive me if someone else has raised this point elsewhere, is the dramatically increased ratio of "Important People" to the general population. Based on my limited research involving a blindfold and my hands, if you are to reach out at any moment and grab a random mafioso walking around you have an 18 to 25% chance of grabbing either a CL, RHM, or LHM.

(Side note: my research has also cost me a great deal of slappings, some superficial bullet wounds, and a public chastisement by MickeyRourke about "not groping important members of other families" or something. All pity donations can be directed to MacLeod Science Inc., care of MacLeod)

Anyways. As you're all aware, we seem to have currently found ourselves in a time of peace. This is certainly good for business- the increased stability means that there are many crews currently being run in the seven cities. By my count, there are 13. With CLs, RHMs, and LHMs all custom fit for suits (and with additional people sharing those suits) that means that there are roughly 3 to 4 dozen men and women that are discernibly "Important People".

I certainly am not raising an issue about the current number of crews or the importance of the position of LHM, but I would like to pose a series of philosophical questions on the issue: How is the perception of power different in the world as it is currently constituted as opposed to the previous state of less men and women wearing these suits at any given moment? Does the position of RHM and LHM still get the same amount of respect in extra-familial interactions? The tenets of supply and demand seem to suggest that the more "slanty suited" men and women there are, the less likely it is for a random mafioso to demonstrate a depth of respect. What effect does this have on this thing of ours? Positive effects? Negative effects?

Again, I'd be interested to see what people have to say about the perception of power. Is it diluted? Or am I deluded?

"Too many chefs ruin the stew" This saying has been around for many years, now while it pains me to call MacLeod deluded he raises an excellent point. I think it has gotten to the point where "important" people are not very important as there are another dozen "important" people. I would also mention half of the important people barley even have half a brain but that is just opening a whole new can of worms...amirite?

It is stranger than what is considered normal, I will give you that.

However, with that said, this is the path the leaders chose (and therefore, passed on to me).

Yes there are a lot of leaders, right hands, and left hands running around, but I don't see how it's a bad thing. It is still an honor either way. So you find yourselves bumping into a few more bold suits. Ideally, only good can come out of that.

I know many of our mothers and fathers before us have seen the cities damn near empty. Even within your own family, dying for someone within the leadership to make themselves available. I for one find this period of peace refreshing, as it can only last so long. This period of peace is a direct reflection upon the number of "important" people seen on the streets. The longer there is peace, the greater the chances are that new faces will make their way to power. And of course you will always have the bloodlines that always work hard and make their way to power.

But to get to your question. As a RH myself, I do not feel as if the position has lost any respect. Nor should it. Having interacted with CL's across our seven cities and even with our fair Godmother, I have never in anyway felt disrespected, as if my position within the family was not important. Now granted, when dealing with the leaders of our cities I always act in a respectable manner. And in my opinion anyone in my position should act that way. Do they all? No. Maybe that makes the difference.

Anyone given the honor of right or left hand should treat it as that, an honor. Their actions are a direct reflection upon their leader. I do not think our level of power has been diluted. Because as day turns to night, this high number of leaders will not last.

on a bright note on this topic, there is a far better chance of a newcomer to these shores of finding a family.

"I certainly am not raising an issue about the current number of crews or the importance of the position of LHM"

Infact, that's ecatly what you're doing... When you come to any street asking questions regarding the validity/perception of LHM etc.

I'm not saying that you're raising an issue about your personal beliefs on this matter, just an issue.

With regards to the ammount of LHM/RHM, they should be perceived and treated no differently as a Crew Leader - that's what this thing of ours is all about, La Cosa Nostra...

My apologies for misspeaking, Vincent. I only meant to say that I don't see any major problems with the way things are and I have no complaints- rather, I had only made an observation and hoped that a discussion would ensue.

After correcting himself, MacLeod turns to the other speakers.

Necrosis, I think the "too many chefs ruin the stew" statement has some merit. Though I wouldn't say that the abundance of families lowers efficiency; if anything, it's the opposite.

Phantom-Ghost, that's certainly a good point. Though I've thrown out any real concept of "normal" when it comes to our world here. There are certainly positive effects of the high number of families as well. As a leader yourself, sir, have you noticed more diverse bloodlines, or even new family lines, have an opportunity to experience a leadership position due to the higher number of families?

Nicky, thank you for your insight and foresight. I myself always chuckle at the people who clamor for more excitement in times of peace, yet beg for stability in times of war. One must appreciate the ebb and flow of this thing of ours, as the current situation certainly won't last forever. It is good to hear that those who have risen to power still get the respect they deserve from other leaders- the alternative would be untenable. Do you see this attitude reflected in the larger Non-CL/RHM/LHM population as well?

SelectiveTourettes, that's quite the nice silver lining. Having such diversity of leaders and organizations can only benefit those who newly arrive on our shores.

Ares listens closely as MacLeod gives his speech. After thinking to himself for some time, he stands up to give his thoughts on the matter.

You asked a couple questions, so I'll take them one-by-one and try my best to add my intelligence to this colloquy.

How is the perception of power different in the world as it is currently constituted as opposed to the previous state of less men and women wearing these suits at any given moment?

Due to the fact that I am one man, amidst a sea of mafiosi, I cannot tell you how the power is publicly perceived. However, I can give my speculations on the subject. If I am not mistaken, the "LHM" position/suit was created by the gods, so that a Crewleader wouldn't need to change his RHM between two different people to accomplish tasks within the HQ. In pre-LHM times, a Family Leader might want to have someone within the family track "earnings", so he would give that person "RHM" for an amount of time, and then change it back. By introducing "LHM", we have eliminated that need for "switching". In light of the above information, wouldn't you say that the "LHM" be treated with the same respect as a "RHM"?

Does the position of RHM and LHM still get the same amount of respect in extra-familial interactions?

Once again, I cannot speak for this world of ours, as a whole, but I can offer my thoughts. On IRC Avenue, there is a place where the Crewleaders and their RHMs would gather to discuss various topics. A CL's LHM is not allowed to enter said place, otherwise you would have "3 or 4 dozen people" each trying to give their thoughts at once. It would be chaotic, and the LHM of a family *should* follow the same ideals as the CL and RHM. Another example would be when someone in Family A killed someone in Family B. If the killer/victims aren't made man+, the usual action would be a request for "HQ Wack" of the killer. This couldn't be handled by the LHM, therefore he wouldn't be involved.

As far as respect goes, I respect each member of other families with respect, especially those with "slanty suits".

Ares skips away...

I agree with Ares.

No need to apologise, it's a very intresting subject, more to the point... it's got people speaking on the streets.
