Black and White and Grey? Started by: GoodFella on Jan 09, '09 11:11
Down a back alley of one of your favorite hometown streets, you notice a man well dressed in a custom tailored grey, beige, and white suit. However, you quickly realize he is not wearing the typical fashioned black and white. Instead, he decided to lose the tie, drop the hat, and forget the archetypal black and white pinstriped vest that normal men of his rank and stature wear everyday. A small group of your fellow La Costa Nostra, family enforcers and associates are gathered around the man who has with him, a very classic soap box to stand upon. As he begins to speak softly you find yourself a comfortable spot in the crowd from which to listen..

I don't often come to the streets and express my opinions for practical purposes, and likewise, I often hear so many Mafioso's in the streets drawing references from such abstract things as to only be found in close, tight-knit inner circles, that is impossible for anyone outside it to relate with. As a firm believer that the street is a place for open dialogue among everyone, an old gangster like myself can't understand why time and time again, these same people continue to obscure our understanding of the bigger picture. This correlates with my greater thought, which is that I can't help but feel as if I'm living in a world of black and white.

My friends, all around me I see things that stand out as clear as we often visualize these two colors. Black and white help us differentiate between rank, status, and anything else of importance that otherwise would have us constantly analyzing again and again; carefully measuring their significance in our thoughts. However, when everything is made so clear as to be put in black and white terms, we often find it easier to weigh our options and truly understand our surroundings.

Some individuals may even have a preference between the two, but will find themselves as often as I, carrying a form of the opposite color to carefully balance out their initial choice. Hell, some Mafioso's are so lucky as to wear far more flamboyant, even bolder varieties to really stress their importance in our society. Again, this necessity allows us to better visualize all of the people and circumstances that make this thing of ours what it truly is.

However my friends, I have also noticed in my many years as a Mafioso that there is a great rift between the black and white. No, I'm not alluding to a dark matter void, but instead the "grey" space between the two. It's in essence, where the two meet and become one and none without ever losing anything but clarity itself. Yes that's right, much like our thoughts, actions, desires, and consequences, what we truly see that distinctly separates the black from the white... is the grey.

Strangely, paradoxically, and perplexedly, grey has a nasty habit of molding our habits a particular way, much like that of black and white. This color I believe however, is far more vast in nature and expansive in thought as any color or "thing" in our society. Perhaps grey transcends from black and white, but alas, I do not want to argue any "chicken and egg" theories as it will only further discolor my intended black and white argument. Take that as you would.

I see grey everywhere to be honest and I'm not sure if I like it. I'm an old fashioned gangster and I prefer as any man of rank and stature does - weighted options. In other words, I like it when I look at a fellow mobster and they are dressed in black and/or white, regardless of the intensity of their ensemble. It helps me to pick them out from otherwise, innocent civilians, cops, or other local administrative authorities and visualize their habits and instinctive nature much like that of my own. But I've also begun to renege on some of these original thoughts to formulate what I hope will be a more meaningful analysis. That's right, I've begun to embrace the grey; hence the suit I wear before you now.

I understand now that the inevitability of grey is the same as black and white. Without the grey, black and white can only differentiate between themselves equally and opposite without meaningful consequence. In other words, it is the grey that in fact allows us to better understand these things which manifest themselves as black and white. The grey gives us the space and time to in our own thoughts, calculate in a capacity unto our own abilities, the options we have in every decision we make. Likewise, the expansiveness and limitless possibilities that grey provides allow us to grow with these thoughts and actions and truly visualize the world around us, which we call the Mafia.

Embrace the grey and embrace your own limitlessness.

He stands down from the old soapbox tosses it aside before nodding the crowd that he is finished

I'm a bit confused Desiree - perhaps you could answer the following question for me...

What the fuck?

Goodfella has clearly toiled on this speech, working hard to create what truly is a masterpiece of rhetoric, and you have come here and just shit all over it. It's a complete insult to Sir Goodfella that you clearly deem the content of his speech to be unworthy of addressing; and it's a complete insult to the existing Crewleaders that you clearly think auth is about waving a juvenile banner around.

Goodfella - fantastic speech, I'll address it when I have more time to give a befitting response.

Actually KingOfOnePercent, He knew that I posted it up there, so take it up with him before bashing on me.

And for your information, I give GF a hell of a lot more credit than you'll ever know. So I'll let you believe what you want.

Quid pro quo lady and gent!

Let's not be rash or hasty with accusations or what not. As I said in my speech I believe everyone should be allowed to express their opinions in the street - regardless of color winks

So perhaps banners don't get people authed, but they are a way of expressing opinions in tough political times in this great country. But alas, again I must say that we should stay on topic with my original speech, please. I've known plenty of people in times past who have had people do rash things with banners, but I don't think we should hold it against them unless it becomes obtrusive.

Anyway, back on topic please

I assume this is credit in the private domain? One one hand we have Goodfella preaching the benefits of open dialogue, and not obscuring the truth; and yet here you are alluding to things which go on behind closed doors. How wonderful.

Goodfealla, I find I must disagree with you somewhat, although I will concede that far too many references to obscurity happen that the majority won't get (and I'm guilty of this a lot sadly), I don't concur that this leads to a black and white world.

Personally, I feel almost everything is subjective and a grey area, on almost any topic you will get many different viewpoints and rather than it resulting in a black and white landscape, I think it contributes making everything more grey; as you'd put it.

Although it's our basest desire to pursue riches and fortune, I feel this is most often aided by exploring these grey areas, sowing the seeds of propaganda and twisting any situation to your own advantage, changing grey to black or to white as it suits you.

That's what I love so much about our way of life.

Before I delve into your speech, I want to say good work. You have brought an invaluable reminder to this world, in the form of verbal information. For those who can read these words, heed these words. This message has more to offer than meets the eye.

Like you have stated in your speech, black and white have given us our ranks, our statutes, our lives. We live by black and white, and yet we don't. Like KOOP said, it is relative. So, we live in a grey area, that represents the space in between a black-and-white world, and one of...well grey area.

So, how can this be a good thing? Well, by being in a place that has the structure of black/white, and the "limitlessness" of the grey. We have a boundless, structured environment. So... why not make the most of our circumstances?

However, the real is question is... how? First, we must decide if we are black or white. We must have some sort of intensity, motivation, LIFE. You must have a reason to be black, or white, for a reason other than being afraid of the other color. Normally, I would expect someone's inspiration to be family. But lately, I'm not even sure of that anymore.

GoodFella has acknowledged that we have allowed "grey" to creep in, and take hold, with no difference to the genesis of "black and white". It is a paradigm shift in the world. Some haven't noticed it, but GoodFella has. He has brought it to our attention, and the least people can do is give him 5 seconds of thought as to how "grey" is affecting our world. Whether you like it or not, you need to decide. Enough sitting in the middle.

Ares walks off after GoodFella to continue his discussion on their way back the HQ...

*Nods in agreement*

Some things were best said the first time around.  Perhaps digging up the past to remind the current generation of the dangers in the present will go a long way in securing a better future.

My uncles words were intriguing in his time, and I believe they will serve us well in our time.
