Just a little idea Started by: DanielOcean on Jan 09, '09 13:37
I love this idea I think it will work great. what I have seen some familys do have it but some do not. One thing I dont like is how the thugs or gangsters become RHM or LHM.

After taking a bit of time to gather his thoughts, Novus steps up to speak.

Now, the above idea looks great, but I think there are a few things that may hinder this from working as planned. You see, the way the world has become, people expect their 'promos', rather than earn them. They believe that all they have to do is put in the "JBs", "Petties", and "Drug Runs", in order to get their new rank. So, how can this structure work with everyone's rank constantly changing? IT CAN'T.

It simply can't be done. It is like trying to build a house on sand during a windstorm. The foundation will constantly change, which prevents any progress from occurring. So, in order for this plan to work, we have two options.

A. We stop promoting people as soon as their new 'button' is in, and thus slowing down the increase in high-ranking members in our society.

or

B. We execute the plan, except the ranks within the family are different than the ranks seen by others. (Ex. A Capo-ranked member in the family actually has the job of "Underboss", while a Boss-ranked member may only fulfill the jobs assigned to "Capo"). So, in essence, giving people a second rank, which has no "points", no "min times", or any time of "requirement", as the boss sees fit.

Novus waits for a moment to see if anyone else wishes to speak, then departs.

" A very good point made there Novus, and one that obviously takes much consideration. It seems to me that if we were to execute the idea of hidden ranks as you pointed out there is a high chance of problems. While this idea does indeed have its plus points, effectively giving bosses the power to bring people into the higher ranks without them having to tick the boxes, it would require a highly structured family, with every member knowing who takes part in what in detail,so as not to cause confusion. However with thought there is no reason why this should'nt work"

* Pauses a moment and clears his throat*

" Personally I believe that your first point, the control of promotions, is a reasonable idea. As many people believe that all they have to do is amount the required amount of small crimes or drug runs to be promoted, perhaps family heads may think of their own requirements of what they consider needed to become made. This would obviously vary from family to family, but such ideas as how much money an individal makes, how much they donate, how often do they visit the streets and how hard have they worked for the family could all be taken into consideration. Now perhaps these actions that create made men are not publicised to the whole family, rather kept with the top rank. It is easy to follow a list of things to cross off on the way to being made, however someone who really deserves to be a member of the family will do these things without needing to follow a check list "

" With these family heads would be able to get the type of people they want in the family, as oppose to merely those who are ready for a promotion, whilst slowing down the number of high ranking members in our society"

I understand completely where you're coming from. In a modern family, this may/may not work. So, perhaps these "secondary ranks" would only apply to Made Men and higher? In that way, the boss can control the positions within the family much closer, and not need to worry about all of his/her associates running around with extra ranks attached to them.

"It is easy to follow a list of things to cross off on the way to being made, however someone who really deserves to be a member of the family will do these things without needing to follow a check list."

I was aiming even higher than that. In my idea of a "Mafia Utopia", there is a unique checklist for each Made Man, because each Made Man is different! Each of them have good qualities, and should be harnessed individually for the good of the family.

The flaw I see with this is what if the people don't want the task they are give? Or what if someone isn't really a good player but just was lucky are lived long enough to get to a decent rank

DJ reaches into his breast pocket and, after a few very nervous moments for some of those nearby, retrieves another Havana and proceeds to clip and light it. It certainly was refreshing to hear some intelligent discussion on the street for a change. Well, if you're not part of the solution you are part of the problem. Too true. After turning things over in his mind for a bit and convincing himself that he would be violating any trusts by revealing a few salient facts he had gleaned from reviewing his ancestors journals. All of the people involved were long dead and none of it would really constitute anything more than repeating speculations made by reporters over the years. DJ supposed that so long as he didn't directly attribute the true source of his information it couldn't do any harm and it might just help. Besides, if someone wanted to pursue the conversation privately he could elucidate in a manner appropriate to the setting.

You know boys I've read quite extensively about the history of organized crime and I seem to recall hearing of people who did successfully implement something along the lines of what you are talking about here. If I recall correctly there was a fellow from Palermo by the name of Salvatore "Turiddu" Guillano or Turi as he was more widely known. Apparently this was precisely the way in which his family was structured, with the internal ranks assigned, well I wouldn't say without regard to, but not necessarily reflecting the ranks as seen by others. In point of fact this makes perfect sense. I wouldn't actually expect the internal structure of a family to be something which was known to outsiders, would you?

As far as people not wanting the task that they are given: no offense, that is really not an issue. You do what your family needs and you do what your family asks of you. Anything less and you don't deserve to be a part of that family. I think we all know the alternative...

I think that to a certain extent all crime syndicates are more or less bound to function in this manner. They may not choose to formally define the actual structure. Of course this is something that we will never really know as the internal workings of a family are known only to it's members.

Now I mentioned Turi earlier. He is often referenced as one of the great leaders of his day. From what I understand he put in a tremendous amount of work trying to change the ways in which things were done and his vision certainly encompassed much which would not be possible without such an underlying structure to support it. As his basic practices were apparently carried on in many other families which followed his demise there must have been something to it. Although I don't think any ever reached for the level of development which was Turi's lofty ambition. Apparently at the time of his death he had already started recruiting people to take on more public roles in his plan, librarians, street evangelists and the like I don't believe that I've heard of anyone whose plans were quite as grandiose as Turi's. Perhaps partly because of the amount of effort involved and perhaps as an indication that others felt that the more grandiose aspects were not practical, or, quite simply, not profitable. As George Washington said: "There is an indissoluble union between a magnanimous policy and the solid rewards of public prosperity and felicity." I can't help but feel that perhaps Turi's approach would have succeeded had the generations that followed fully shared his vision.

Alas Rome was not built in a day. The true impact of most organizations are not truly felt until well after the demise of their initial architects. For such enormous societal changes to take hold would doubtless take many generations, leaving only history to judge. Unfortunately there are precious few men willing to make the sacrifices necessary to implement such changes and forgo the more tangible short term rewards of alternate courses of action. Let's face it, money talks! Then again, perhaps the antecedent portion of his vision was all that was worth emulating. As the concept began expanding to include more public aspects it would certainly attract considerably more attention and a much higher profile for the family. Perhaps from an external viewpoint the insipid nature of criminal conspiracy would lead one to presume a more insidious nature to the extension of what might be viewed as Turi's tentacles.

Well, whatever else he might have done, Salvatore "Turiddu" Guillano was clearly thinking outside the box in more ways than one.

DJ senses that even the few people whom comprised his original audience were beginning to glaze over. Preferring his glaze on his doughnuts Jim decides to give it a rest at this point.
