It had been a long day for Marietto. Aside from his newest occupation of knocking over 7-11s, he had been verbally attacked and interrogated by members of the so-called 'mafia' over his refusal to join a family. He was, luckily, protected by both the Gods and by the laws of the illegitimate business enterprises that operated across the 7 cities. He was no fool. He knew that once that protection lifted, or even some time before, he would come face-to-face with the barrel of a gun, and then face-to-face with St. Peter at the pearly gates. But this did not bother him. For the first time in his life he was living; living for nobody but himself. No obligation, no responsibility, no worries. He was enjoying himself for the very first time in a very long time. And a short-lived happiness has much more value than a long-lived depression. If it were another time and in another place, Marietto would have fought for all he's worth to earn a place as an associate for one of the great families of North America. He would have been respectful and courteous. He would have earned a great deal of money, made a great deal of contacts, and shown a great deal of loyalty and determination. But, sadly, he knew his time was up, and it would make little sense to spend his last remaining days working for another; not just for his own sake -- wanting to live his last days as well as he could -- but also for the sake of the families, their leaders, their captains, their soldiers, and even their lowly associates. If he knew that his time here was short, would it not, after all, be rude of him to not inform those for whom he would work? Could he honestly lie to them? Insist that he would be a valuable asset; that he would work to all his strength to help the family survive and prosper? To allow these great men and women to put their trust in him, only for him to throw it right back in their faces? Marietto may have been a thief and a murderer, but he was honest; honest to his own word. He couldn't lie. He just couldn't do it. But perhaps these leaders would accept his work for the limited time he was able to give? Perhaps even those few days for which he could work was enough for these powerful figures to grant him association with their respective families? Yes, that might be the case. But Marietto did not want to spend his last days under the rule of another. Why? He, having no family, held no respect or undying loyalty for another or their kin. If he were to join a family, then yes, that respect and loyalty would grow, but until that time -- which, sadly, would never come -- he was his own man, having loyalty and respect to and for only himself. Still, yes, another option remained. He could end his life here and now. Take his gun, press it against his temple, and pull the trigger. He knew he had but a few days remaining; why wait? Why not end it when and as he chooses? At his own time? On his own terms? It was tempting, but just not tempting enough. Marietto was not one to back-down. He was determined. He had a strong will. He would never, no matter the circumstances, be they even of impossible odd, give up. He would fight, and keep on fighting until the fight is forcibly taken from him. He will make a stand for himself. He will look death in the eye and smile. He will face it full on; in full stride. Never hiding. Never running away. To the very end. |

Shudders after the experience, and ribs his eyes. I've seen the inside of his mind and it's a scary place. Please don't make me go back there. And, by the way, I'm sure there are leaders out there willing to take on a "temporary" member - as long as he's loyal and hard-working. And, of course, doesn't tarnish the family name. |
