A Crackdown in New Orleans [RP] Started by: Muqtada on Jan 11, '09 15:19
Earlier this week in New Orleans, the Chief of Police was gunned down in public for his blatant racism towards Italians.

The city of New Orleans was abuzz. Someone had shot the chief of police two days ago, in broad daylight in a heavily Sicilian part of town, and no one was stepping forward as a witness. It was obvious why it happened: he had ruffled some feathers with his harsh, indiscriminate tactics against all Italians in a futile attempt to bring the mob to justice. As far as Robert Maestri, the brusque Mayor of New Orleans, was concerned that didn't change a thing. In fact, it just made him angrier. For the first time in his life he was appointing a competent, upstanding citizen to a government position instead of one of the usual corrupt cronies. Anything to show the mob who's boss finally establish himself as a quasi-dictator of the town. With that in mind he selected George Reyer, an astute teetotaler, to head the police and bring the thugs to justice.

Elsewhere downtown the police department was full of furious officers. Everything they knew about procedure had been thrown out the window. Previously they were content to look away from time to time when the mob had to clean up its own business. After all, no one weeps when criminals kill each other. But that was all predicated on the same basic premise: "You don't shoot a cop." As far as they were concerned, it was now open season if the mob was going to flagrantly cross the line like this. Sure, they all hated their angelic new police chief. He was a hardass who would turn you in at the drop of a hat, not even tolerating the lesser forms of depravity. But for now they were willing to submit to it; they knew that he wouldn't cave in and let the deaths of officers go unpunished regardless of how much money he could make by turning a blind eye.

Reyer wasted no time after his appointment setting up his anti-crime regime. Anyone he could prove was crooked was fired immediately, despite being a considerable sum of officers. He set to work assembling a special task force of only the honest cops that he knew he could trust, pairing them with the suspicious ones in order to keep everyone in line. The major reshuffle, submitted to only because each officer's burning desire to avenge the death of their former superior, drew results within hours. The crackdown brought in nearly every two bit thug and gangster in New Orleans. There were so many criminals arrested that most of them had to be sent to the minimum security prison where it would be easy for them to escape or be busted out.

Sitting in in the Fratellanza dei Assassina headquarters, Muqtada stewed in his own frustration. Half of his associates were now in jail, though thankfully most of his Family proper were able to escape the grasp of the police. They were hiding away in separate safe houses, unable to return to the headquarters now that their vehicles were IDed. Muqtada at the time saw this all as nothing more than an inconvenience that would pass in time. A steep price of business for asserting himself so emphatically, but certainly worth it in the end. There was no way the police would have the gall to walk straight into the lion's den and provoke his wrath further after he had already shown he had no compunction about assassinating even their top dog. It was nothing more than an opportunity for the Boss to see who would be resourceful enough to keep themselves out of trouble, who would do their time without turning others in, and who would cut a deal in exchange for a few months of freedom.

Or so he thought. Directly outside Muqtada's window was a scene he never thought possible: streams of squad cars, sirens blazing, screeching down the boulevard from both directions. There must have been at least forty of them in total, surrounding every point of egress from the HQ and leaving Muqtada caught in their devious snare. Sensing what was coming, he got on the phone with his blazing-hot right hand woman, Snowflake. "SnowFlake, they've come for me, the cops, about a hundred of them ... I can't believe it either ... Of course I remembered to pay the bribe ... I think they're serious this time." Outside, the cops were shouting orders for Muqtada to surrender himself through megaphones. "You might need to bust me out for once. I'd better get this done with, bye."

Stepping outside, Muqtada confidently shouted "Who's in charge here? I need to talk to him right now. This is unacceptable. Get off my property!" Reyer stepped out as two men handcuffed Muqtada and responded "tell it to the judge, asshole. We're putting you away for good."

So they took him in. And not to some prison where you can come and go as you please like Muqtada expected. It was a maximum security prison, with guard towers and dogs and redundant security unlike anything Muqtada had ever experienced. Even when the Philly cops decided to hold the highest priority suspects they were not under this close of guard. It was hard to believe, but somehow the new chief of police had managed to staff an entire prison with guards that held Muqtada personally responsible for the death of the former police chief, who had always remembered to leave them some of the spoils when his corrupt schemes left them with less prisoners. There was no way to bribe his way out of it, and a breakout would be no normal measure... It was up to his family to find a way to get him out of the slammer.

SnowFlake sat unable to speak or move for a few minutes. Her mind tried to digest what Muqtada had just told her. "Real this time? There is never going to be a real this time for Muq, I will find a way to get him out of there" she thought to herself.

SnowFlake got on the phone and contacted two of her men Sonic and Kyle. "I need all the information you can gather on that prison and its staff. Go as deep as possible and spare no expense on getting anything available."

Next she phoned MikeHunt, "We are going to have to plan this well, I have boys gathering information now. Within the next few days all of us and all our friends are going to have to sit down and figure out how we are going to get him out of there. He's not spending one more day than he has to there!"

SnowFlake walks towards her desk and opens the bottom drawer. She gets out a shot of whiskey and downs it. Her nerves need some major calming. The day they never thought they'd see has arrived and now they have to get the ball back into their own court. Getting Muqtada home would only be the beginning of this dispute......

Kyle was sitting the back of a car on the way back to his safe house. He had been rounded up in the first wave of police arrests earlier that day. Thankfully he was allowed his one phonecall and managed to persuade one of his buddies from a few jobs in the past to come and break him out of a minimum security prison in downtown Orleans. Kyle and Joe said they're goodbyes and agreed that Kyle owed him a huge favour!

A car was waiting for Kyle three roads down from the prison. He jumped in calling the address to the driver "34, Watford Road mate!"

The driver replied over his shoulder "Ok my man. How was jail?!"

Kyle smirked at his loyal drivers sense of humour but he had more pressing matters at hand. The entire journey he was restless. He couldnt sit still for more than a minute. Murming and plotting under his breath and then shaking his head. Every now and then he would say something like "No! That will never work!"

On reaching the house, Kyle didnt have time to thank his driver. He slammed the door of the car and burst through his front door slamming down his jacket on the hallway floor.

Before he could turn to shut the door behind him the phone rang from the kitchen. He runs to answer it leaving the door open. It was Snowflake.

He listens intently to all she says. Taking in the information and filling in a few missing gaps he had. Eventualy she stops. She sounded frantic on the phone. "OK" says Kyle. "So, heres what I know"

Kyle explained what he had overheard while bein incarserated. About the new cheifs plans to rid the city of crime families and mobs within the next 12 monthes.

Snowflake sounded stunned and was silent for a few seconds. "I know, I couldnt beleive it either" Explained Kyle. "But its true"

If we are to survive we must rescue Muqtada. He will know what to do but if its war this cheif wants, then its war he shal get!

Mike trembled as he held the phone. His face was pale and his legs were shaking. He had never imagined his trip would turn out like this.

I'm on my way dear. Don't worry, we'll sort this out. We'll get it all sorted. Set up the meeting!

He slammed down the phone, fighting back the urge to scream. He had made his journey to Mexico with visions of the future, how things could be. Now he was worrying about how things were going to unfold over the coming days, not the coming years.

He had to finish his discussions with the associates and their new suppliers, but he had a more immediate priority. He had family business to attend to. Passing his apologies to the group, they shook on the details of the new deal. Everything had been agreed, at far more favourable prices than they had ever hoped. They were seriously ramping up their operations. The streets of the seven cities would see a whole new level of 'business' taking place, but only if the family could sort out the immediate problems. If this crackdown was as bad as Snowflake had implicated, how were they even going to bank role the increased supply? He knew that this deal could just as easily turn into a war as a good business deal, but the potential pay day was just too good for the family to turn down.

His mind raced as he began his journey back to the "La Fratellanza dei Assassina,

una Famiglia dei Leggende" headquarters. This was going to be one hell of a 'job'.

After speaking with Mike, SnowFlake did feel a little better. Mike had always been very good at keeping her calm and speaking with such positive outlook; she couldn't help but feel the same energy. SnowFlake picked up and the phone and continued to get a hold of all her men. Each ensured her they would be home as soon as possible and would take to their people who may have information that could help La Frat in their current situation. Firstly they'd have to wait for Mike to arrive but once he was here SnowFlake hoped the information and plans were very forthcoming. She couldn't bear the thought of Muqtada being in that place, surrounded by those men. The boss was her top priority right now, once he was home they could try to figure out where to go from here and how to deal with this new situation.

Sonic picked up the phone only to hear Snowflake on the other end

"Snowflake whats the matter please slow down, yes.. ok, don't worry i'll be there as soon as possible"

Once Sonic arrives he starts talking to Snowflake and MikeHunt

"Right we need to think of a plan have you hard from Kyle did he know anythink, Maybe we should get him down here"

Sonic pursuades Snowflake to call Kyle once more but no answer, mean while Kyle was in a cop chase they had found him and rapidly chasing his loyal taxi driver down the street

"Any ideas on how we are going to get him out"

The police convoy lined the streets as the officers surrounded the apartment building that housed the mafiosi who carried out the hit on the police chief. No one had any time to react, especially when it was 6:00 am and they were all sleeping. The door was broken in and the police flooded the room where the three men slept for the night. The first day after the Police Chief was killed the paranoid mobsters hid out, hoping they were not going to be caught.

All of them were lined up against the wall searched for weapons or anything else, along with a search warrant within the building, which resulted in the discovery of the murder weapon. All of the were placed in cuffs and brought outside to the paddy wagon and loaded inside.

The convoy drove to the prison where the Boss of the New Orleans Family was placed as well. Upon arrival, Carmelo was able to spot the protestors outside with signs like "Death to the Italians" and "Send them back to Italy!" The looks of the people were angry and some of them began throwing things at the bus as the prisoners were brought inside the gates.

They placed Carmelo inside a cell next to the boss, leaving the others on the opposite side of the cell block. "Ciao Mr. Muqtada.." he said as he whispered into the cell next to him.

Thehawk sat in the little apartment Muqtada had set up as a safehouse for him. He opened the newspaper he'd had his driver bring him. The headline read: Famous Upper-Structure of La Fratellanza dei Assassina, una Famiglia dei Leggende Arrested

Thehawk read this in outrage. All of the commanders where incarcerated, he was one of the few left. He got on the phone and called a buddy of his, Tony Mordello, an arms dealer and an information specialist.

"Yeah, Tony, do you have anything that won't get in a lie detector, something I could maybe fit in a Bible, or something? Perfect." said Thehawk. "Send it over, I'll pay for it here."

It took a few days to hollow 'em out, but he did it. He managed to fit 3 .38 Snubnoses in one Bible, with some dynamite and other tools in the other. He, of course, bought himself a gun, but his was a Thompson. After the lockpicks were made, he headed out for San Dominique Penitentary.

He made it through the checkpoints, thank God, and made it to Muqtada's cell block. He saw a police chief standing in front of Muqtada's cell.

"You dirty Italian son of a bitch! Tell me what I want to know!" ordered the chief, his arms were through the bars, gripping the collar of his shirt.

"You will get nothing from me, or anyone else. Leave," commanded Muqtada.

The police chief cursed under his breath, then made to leave. In shock, he saw Thehawk standing there, holding a pair of Bibles. He walked forward.

"Ah, if it isn't the ever-so-elusive Hawk. You're lucky you aren't behind these bars," threatened Maestri.

"Maestri, I will kill you before this episode is over. You can count on it. Never touch Muqtada, or anyone else in the family. Yeah, I heard about what you did to Snowflake. Sexually assaulted her in her safehouse, until she pulled the Saturday Night Special that was underneath her pillow, and you got her for fuckin resisting arrest. Get the hell out of my sight," said Thehawk, his voice deathly low.

Maestri went along his way, and Thehawk slipped the Bibles to Muqtada.

"Sir, it's time to get you the hell out. The second one will help. If we should come across any guards on the way, the first one will take care of it. One for everyone.

Muqtada stood in awe of the fact that Thehawk has managed to bypass several layers of security with their own metal detectors, pat downs, and ID tags. Not only that, but he managed to do it alone. Collecting himself, he looked down at the gun stashed in the Bible and decides better of brandishing it. If the guards heard a shot the entire place would go into lock down anyway, and there was no way for just the three of them (Muqtada was not leaving without Carmelo) to get out after that. They were outnumbered by way too much to try shooting their way out. Instead, Muqtada put his new toy under his pillow and tossed the empty Bible-box into the cell across the aisle. With any luck, if things went south during their escape the guards would return him to the same room without finding his hidden weapon.

"We'd better try a stealthy approach. I've seen a bit of the security system on the way in. Most of the guards are stationed right next to reinforced steel doors they can lock up to keep everyone in this place until backup arrives. And there are plenty of alarm switches for the ones that make patrols, too." He motions over to the cell next to him. "Carmelo's in there. We'd better find a way to get him out. He's slated to get the chair in a few days. It'll be tough to get a key though."

The two settle on a crude plan to attempt to overpower one of the guards patrolling the cell block while he's between alarms to get the key to Carmelo's cell. Hopefully they would either catch him off guard or he'd be too stupid to yell at the sight of escaping criminals. So Muqtada hid just behind a corner and waited for the guard to pass. As soon as he did, Muqtada's fist surged straight into his diaphragm, knocking the wind out of him and leaving the guard unable to yell for help. After a brief scuffle, Thehawk jumped in with a sleeper hold and knocked the guard out for good. Just as the two relieved him of his keys, they discovered why the Chief had been so nonchalant about leaving when Thehawk arrived: Alarms blared, and two dozen armed guards rushed in to escort them both back to their cells. Muqtada shrugged. "Well, it was a good try, anyway. We'll see what Mike and SnowFlake come up with, eh? Hopefully they remember to cut the power and phone lines."

The plane journey from New York had been horrendous, not only had he had to suffer being sandwiched betwee two large women, he had also had to put up with the infernal cries of children uncomfortable with travel. His head pounding as he struggled to get off the plane, exaustion set in like rot on old wood.

Phoning snowflake from the airport he asked where she needed him as he waited for the next move. Catching a view of a police car outside, he knew he would need to make a pay off to someone to get out of here. Watching the engineers refuel the plane, he decided his only ways out were another flight or an engineers oily clothes.

He walked back towards the plane before whispering to the engineer and then following the engineers apprentice, the change of hands of the C note not even noticeable before he swatted his oily hand accross my face for full affect. Lifting an oily rag of the floor after slipping on the overalls it was time to leave by the tradesman entrance and onto a phone box nearer home.

Thehawk sat on the cold, hard bunk in the prison cell. There must have been a way out. He stood up, grabbing onto the bars to the cell, and shook them. Of course, everyone thought the guard had been killed, so he'd been immediately thrown in a cell, without a trial. Before they checked the guard's condition, they had planned orginally to kill him right after Carmelo, so he was on edge. He wasn't about to get the chair.

Unfortunately for the guards, even Carmelo had to be given time, so they took Carmelo, Muqtada, and Thehawk out on a chain gang, cleaning up one of Muqtada's own swamps, the perfect place for an escape. They'd planned it all out during lunch and recreation. Muqtada and Thehawk would take the guns they managed to bring along, Hawk's in a copy of The Old Man and the Sea. Muqtada had managed to get a couple of paperclips in from Snowflake, which would pick the foot irons.

About noon, in the hard labour, the three silently agreed. Thehawk threw himself down, opening his book and pretended to read, same with Muqtada. Thehawk, who had two, slipped one silently to Carmelo. The guard came over, his hand on his pistol, and ordered them to get to work.

"Meet us in hell, sir," retorted Thehawk, as he pulled the gun. One shot, straight through the forehead, killed him. "Son of a bitch, been a long time since I shot one of these, used to those new, more quiet ones."

SnowFlake awoke after a night in jail. She made her one call and had an associate at the city lockdown to post her bail.

"Resisting arrest? What a bullshit charge. Driver! Get me to that secret location ASAP. Mike is supposed to be meeting me there. We have to work out these plans and get Muqtada home. Things are getting messier by the moment and we need the boss home before this gets any worse"

The car screamed through traffic to the edge of town where La Frat had another safe house. One not used in so long the police would never be able to find them this time. The remaining members were to meet SnowFlake at their discretion. When they knew they weren't being followed. SnowFlake got out of the car, making sure to bring in the brown bag the driver had picked up for her. After a couple days like these she needed a drink. Just one to get her going again

Muqtada, laying in his cell, hears a lot of murmuring coming from the cell across the hall. "Hey, Hawk, wake up. Sounds like you're having a hell of a dream there." Speaking to himself, he added: "Poor guy. I tried to warn him about the balls these guys had suddenly groan, but he just wouldn't listen... The guards busted him up something fierce when he told them off. He must be delirious from the thrashing. I hope it's not permanent."
Report Post Tip
In fact, Muqtada was right, that was the very thing he was thinking of. Muqtada had gone quietly, even though he was cursing randomly, but Thehawk had to open his mouth.

"You are under arrest for aiding and abetting the escape of a criminal, punishible by immediate jail time, without a jury trial," said one of the senior guards.

"Listen to me, you bastard, back the fuck off. I run the show here now," said Thehawk, getting face to face.

Guards had ran forward and grabbed him, putting his hands behind his back, and they kicked his leg, breaking it. The senior guard had taken his nightstick and beaten Thehawk all over, giving him a bloody lip, black eye, brused body, and several contusions, even a concussion. He'd been out for three days, which is bad, because tomorrow would be the eve of the day Carmelo would become deep-fried.

Lifting the phone he asked Snowflake if the coast was clear, the thought of hiding had never been his style or position but something that had developed with time. The thoughts of not been able to use his car and constant disguises to safely mill around New Orleans excited and worried him.

Thehawk lay in his bunk, asleep, dreaming of the last thing he'd said to his wife before he went into hiding. He'd handed her a pistol, and told her to surrender to the police, that he'd be there to free her, and to say nothing about anything. He woke to a rustle, and took the cane that was propped against the wall. He stood, his leg hurting almost instantly, and he limped over to the door.

He noticed the first woman walked by. It was his wife. She broke from the procession and went to him. He embraced her, through the bars. Other women in the procession included Carmelo's wife and Mike's daughter. The warden, who, for some unknown reason, was going with the guard procession. He came over to Hawk's wife, and shoved her out of the way, clearly enjoying the way he was treating the Italians.

"You son of a bitch, leave her alone!" yelled Hawk, shoving the warden away from her.

The warden stumbled, to see the bloody, beaten man still resisting. He'd broken all the prisoners, except the three here in the cellblock. "What are you going to do if I don't?" he sneered.

"The same thing I'm gonna do to Maestri. I am going to kill you.

Putting down the phone he searched his pockets for change to pay the tram, watching the colourful variety of society as he waited he looked how better to blend in. Sitting on the back end of the tram, he noticed the stares of people thinking he was leaving work and maybe a lower class, if only they knew he could buy and sell them like candy in a store.

Jumping of the tram in town he stripped off his overalls and pocketed his jewellery so to be less conspicuous, as he looked for floretti's to grab snowflakes pastries. The allure of handbags and wallets waiting to be lifted preyed on his mind as he thought how often he had walked down the arcade and stole from one end to the other and laughed with his friends on how oblivious the people were. He had to concentrate, a single action could get him penned in with the others.

finally he breathed a sigh of relief as he got to the bakers, now he thought the fun really begins running circles round the Police who seemed to have appeared on street corners.
Report Post Tip
Growing in confidence he thought he would have some fun with the nearest police officer and explained how he had seen snowflake near the bakery, the shrill sound of the whistle being blown near his ear almost deafened him but the diversion was needed. Watching as the cops scrambled like leaves in the wind he quickly made his move back to the tram and away from notice.

Escaping the trams and the wretches aboard he followed down the back alleys to the safehouse, the buildings and passages like a labyrinth, the feeling of being a rat in a maze was constant as he followed twisting passage ways and climbing fire escapes to drop down through another building. The constant eyes on the lower ground checking for cops as he got up the fire escapes and trying to mix in with the crowds on the lower ground was a nightmare.

Noticing Snowflake as he climbed one of the final fire escapes he waved to her to get ready at the door, for now he would be safe. Taking a few last looks around he watched the empty alleys as the people huddled to work, silence at last.

Walking down the street casually Sonic hears sirens in the background worried that they might be after Snowflake he follws his ears to check it out.
