Who / Whom in MR Started by: RourkeyRourke on Jan 13, '09 21:42
Obviously, most of you won't care about this, but that's why I'm here!

We have two exhibits:

Exhibit A: Whom do you want to WACK! today?

Exhibit B: Who do you want to BG WACK! today?

Which is correct?

I believe it is "whom" since the subject in question is "you," the verb is "WACK!" or "BG WACK!" and the direct object in this case is the person being wacked which requires the use of "whom."

VendettaJames...you about?

After further review, it appears that the Administrative team is siding with the use of "Who."

Exhibit C: Who do you want to pickpocket today?

If you or yours are aware of which one is correct, please contact me ASAP.

Exhibit A: Whom is correct

Exhibit B: Whom is correct

Exhibit C: Who is correct

Who/whoever is subjective, where as whom/whomever are objective.
Report Post Tip
Typo there incidentally, I mean to put "Whom" as the correct pronoun for exhibit C.
Report Post Tip
Exhibit C is "whom".

A quick and easy way to check for correct usage of who or whom in a sentence is to simply replace who/whom for he/him or she/her. If he or she would be the correct form, the proper word is who. If him or her would be correct, the proper choice is whom.

You may have to rearrange the sentence in order to make it work.

Who/whom do you want to WACK! today?

Substitute:

Do you want to WACK! he/him today?

In this case (and in the other two examples presented), "him" completes the sentence with the correct form, therefore the correct choice is "WHOM".

WHOM do you want to WACK!/BG WACK!/pickpocket today?

Hope this helps!

Do Jedi get paid to be that witty?
Report Post Tip
Na, the "wit" comes free; we charge for use of the force, brandishing our light saber and using our Jedi mind tricks.
