| Who's the New Guy? | Started by: Novus_Vox on Jan 15, '09 14:00 |

Novus walks around and sees that only a couple people have decided to share their thoughts on this cold winter evening. So, after a bit of debating in his mind, he steps around to a New York street corner and begins a small speech. When a person looks at our world, what do they see? First, they see the gates into our crime-filled habitat. They walk up to the gates, perform the needed registration in order to become a U.S. civilian. They walk out onto the streets of Detroit, LA, Philly, New York, New Orleans, and even out in the Las Vegas desert. They start their search of finding a family, which usually starts with what's known as an "Invite Request". Now, I will not be going into how our lives all began, but I want to get a point across. What do the newest affiliates of our society take in during their earliest stages? This question could be the reason for why we have street-absent associates and quite possibly why our world is beginning to fade into apathy. However, this is not a rant, and I will not be going into the negatives of our current situation. So, if we look at the first few hours... maybe even days of a new comrade, we can see where they lose the desire to be active. When I first began my march into this new world, I was immediately greeted by men, claiming to be from some family, which I have no real urge to say who. The first man was what I have begun to call a "greeter". Its a person who welcomes you to the world, makes sure you know what you're doing, etc. Then, you have to have an actual conversation with a CL, or RHM, or LHM. This is a key part in the life of a "newbie". So, this conversation, between the CL/RHM/LHM and the new guy is a wonderful place to start. Based on the request, most bold/slanty members of the community can determine how well this associate will perform and work for their boss. Also, this is where the first influence can be made. Apart from the "greeters", the direct connection between a CL/RHM/LHM and the civilian is key. You see, the best and easiest way to influence someone, is to do it before anyone else has. It's a fresh piece of clay, waiting to be molded into the perfect mafioso. So, who is responsible for the state our world is in? The leaders. I don't mean the current leaders, because the current leaders were taught accordingly by their leaders, and so on and so forth. So, somewhere, someone got lazy and decided not to teach how our world is run. We have a... code of sorts. We live by our own rules, not by those made by the government. Plus, each mafioso must decide their own ethics, and then form them into their family's. My bloodline has a definite way of doing things, and that will never change. So, I hope every one of you can define your morals, your values, your honor. What will you live for? What will you die for? I don't want to just leave you with no hope for discussion, so I'll make a little summary in the form of a question.
Novus takes a seat and waits for responses. |

Phantom listens and as he watches all the mafioso talk amongst themselves, he raises his hand and begins to speak. You said something along the lines of:
Now, before I get to the question at hand, I must say I resent that statement as you cannot, and frankly will not speak for all the leaders here, and certainly can't claim to speak for all the leaders past. I wouldn't normally spout family business, however suffice it to say I do make every effort to teach my members, as well as just civilians how to be successful mafioso within this thing of ours. If they are a write off, then they are a write off, God knows there are some out there, however I pride myself on teaching. Moving on to the question at hand: I believe in order to *successfully* influence new comers, it needs to be the communities responsibility as well, not just the leaders. You seemed to want to place the blame on the leaders of the past when, in reality, all experienced mafioso have a responsibilty to preserve and look after the future of this thing of ours. Phantom pauses and takes a step back. |

* Tequin coughs to gain attention then steps forward* " As a reasonably new member of society I feel as though I am in perhaps a good poistion to make some comments on this question. Now fairly obviously influence begins almost instantly, as soon as new comers step foot onto this shore and are approached by family members they are being influenced" " I belive it is how there family representitives treat civilians within the first few conversations that really make the impact. People offering help is the biggest plus, at least it was for me when I first started this life of ours. It was the fact that with help I could effectively start and continue my own career, if I had recieved money perhaps I would now not be so comfortable in attempting to do so" " An example is that of drug trade, after some tuition I felt confident enough to strike out and earn, instead if I had been offered money from the get go I would have had perhaps less incentive to learn" * Pauses and pushes back his hair* " Learning this way means that new members of the society learn to work hard, something that is invaluable to a family. Then as the new comers grow older and more experienced they pass their knowledge down to those who are eager to learn, and the cycle begins again" |

First, you don't need to raise your hand. You're the leader of a family, and this isn't a classroom. Second, my statement. "Somewhere, someone got lazy and decided not to teach how our world is run." I wasn't speaking for all the leaders here, nor every leader ever to exist in the past. If you notice, I said "someone", not "everyone". This statement is directed towards the people who didn't take the time to mentor someone they should have, and now we have to live with them. It doesn't just apply to leaders, it's a general public statement. I appreciate that you teach your members, but it doesn't make sense to me how we have nearly illiterate capos running around. Due to this "illiteracy", it is incredibly difficult for me to respect someone who doesn't even care about what they say, since this world is entirely based around what words are said. I apologize if my words were taken to be disrespectful towards you, or maybe someone in the past...? If you have any more concerns about what was said here, I'm certain that we can have a private conversation concerning such topics. As for the question at hand, I do hope for more responses. |

First, you don't disrespect a Crew leader. PG knows very well that he is a leader of a Family, and if he bloody well wants to raise his hand to catch someones attention in a crowd, he may do so. There are many that have expressed their loyalties to their leaders by their actions. Not by how they may eloquently express themselves to the masses. I for one, do not need to baby every civilian that comes to these shores. Nor do I have to kill them for their crimes on establishments that are not affiliated with me or my associates. Those who query, are are given the help they need. Those who help the new, claps all round. But what bothers me, is the one that taught you, did not teach you the one most important thing that you need to survive. Respect. Don't tell me otherwise, cause you have disrespected him by insinuating that class room like behavior is what he had come out here with. You mentioned that your bloodline has a way of doing things and that wont change. It will change. |

I'd like it to be said that Novus has come to me in private and we have worked through what has been said here. No hard feelings are held toward him. Mickey, I appreciate your words. Phantom tips his hat. |

Harvey steps up, slamming his cane against the ground, then leaning on a wall. Going to need an oxygen tank before the year is out. Back to the topic at hand. I just came out here to say one thing against what has already been said. I do agree with Phantom that it is the community's responsibility to look after the future. Correct me if I misinterpreted, but Tequin was saying not to baby each civilian that comes our way. I agree, but that puts a lot of gray area between those fine lines. In the past, I had been out there at the shores, offering bread and soup and any advice I could. I lost count of the number of times I was ignored. By who? Not the fresh ones. It was the ones that came to these shores in search of the father or mother. Weather it be revenge, or whatever reason they had, they knew exactly what they were doing when they walked onto the street. And yet, they ignored one of the fundamentals of our society. Obviously they don't need to help, and they don't need to entertain me, but I'd prefer if they told me to "fuck off" instead of a blatant ignore. It is, in my opinion, disrespect. Every once in a blue moon I get the old lineage who respectfully declines my help. That it all I ask. I'm at those train stations and boat harbors offering help of any kind as often as I can. I used to be. |

Novus_Vox, I've stood here in the cold listening to all opinions. Crew Leaders are very busy trying to sort through family matters and the public at large. It's very difficult to try and teach each individual that speaks to them. Really, why should they even try to teach every one of them? Personally, as a more experienced representative of my family, I try my best to educate newcomers to our way of life. I am a higher member of my family and feel a duty to lead by showing them how to conduct business and how to give respect to all. I feel we are all responsible to care for new members to our world. Each individual to this life is from a different country or background. Each of us tries to mesh in to form one group. There are many book-smart people who can smooth talk you and make you believe every word from their mouths but yet we find others such as poor peasants who stowed away on ships and came here to blend in. Everyone here on our shores draws close to a family they are comfortable with. Do you really think the members of the Five Points communities in NY are book-smart? Don't try to fool yourself. Even the men and young boys learned a way of life by survival. It's amazing how somethings change so slowly, and others are accepted most immediately. |

"Teach" Lol. I'm a fucking criminal, not a professor. I kill people, I do not write on blackboards. However, there have been a few members in my family history who tried to pass on some knowledge to individuals who were worthy to receive it. Not many, mind you. The vast majority are dumbfucks who cannot be taught. They do not have the patience to learn, they want immediate gratification, and they refuse to listen. A wily veteran can show them the ropes, and the rookie might think that they can do it better. So be it. Some need to learn the hard way, through trial and error, and that's not a bad thing. There is something to be said for having the tenacity to persevere until you get it right. That philosophy does not mesh well in this day and age, when we greet new immigrants on the docks with fruit baskets, hugs, and warm jackets. This way of life is not supposed to be a cakewalk. Faulting leaders for the failure of others is ridiculous. Why can't these fucking morons learn on their own? My oldest ancestor did, and I turned out pretty well. |

| Well my point of view is why is it the leaders job? I mean there are othere players. Have a fewer low leveled people show the people that really do wanna learn the ropes. Im sure you'll get a few bad apples but more the better. Send some wiseguy or mademan at them and have them deal with it. The bosses have better things to do than wait around for people to come to this great land. Maybe a more user friendly tutorial. I read the whole thing and didnt understand anymore than the 15 min before. Make a detail summary of each task in the game order by improtants. | |

Con rispetto, I likewize do not believe that we should coddle the newcomers. All that does is make them weak, but at the same time, if they ask for help who are we to refuse them? Se non diamo loro il pane come mangieremo? What I mean is this, they come to us with so little, if they are willing to ask, even if they come to pay a debt owed them, how can we grudge them a chance? I do not think that they should be made sport of, and I do not believe that most of them are too dumb to learn. What I do know is this, those who rely on books alone will not last long on these streets. As to the tutorial flyers, it is much better to swallow your pride and ask then to spend all your time reading them. |

The gentle wind blows against his back as his jacket blows in the breeze, his hand sipping coffee as black as night with a gentle smell of the whiskey which keeps of the cold on his breath. He speaks gently for one of such large frame "We all come here with different skills, different ways and is always someone who can make use of us for certain jobs. Not all of us out here are going to obtain the lofty heights of boss or consig and even less don or godfather" "we come to this world to get by and often our leaders, ancestors or friends of the family have imprinted certain virtues and attitudes on us. Yes it is great to have greeters and people to talk you through things but is the attitude of the person being taught and the method used that can make the difference" "Literacy is one of the things mentioned, when i came to this country i had never had anyone teach me english, i picked up bits as i went along, and now have improved but even my literacy is not of the highest level" "Other people don't get seen as much on the streets as are we really going to dance down the street aiding people with woopdy doo i am a don, i can walk down the streets and police won't worry what i do?" He sips at the coffee again as the steam of the cofee and breath is visible in the chilly morning air "we are born with a capability to learn and no matter how many times we 'adopt a n00b' or try work with others there mentality and attitude will be what decides what happens. Some people can learn with a gentle word and a laugh and a joke others well.." he pauses briefly "lets just say it doesn't always work out". Tipping his hate he slips down a side alley to finish off his days business. |
