Inauguration Complaints and Observations Started by: Narcolepsy on Jan 19, '09 17:28
Ok, I'll admit it. I'm kind of excited about President Obama. But, I have some observations and/or complaints about the goings on around the inaugural ceremony. I keep seeing on TV, how this is a time of "healing for the country" and how we're all supposed to "pull together." Oprah and various celebrities are finally proud of our country. I get it, they're excited. I feel like it's a bit hypocritical. When their candidate wins, we should all come together and heal, if McCain had won, we should all be pissed at the evil Republicans? Then I'm looking at the people that are surrounding this event, celebrities and such. Very rich people. And one of the complaints has been that the Republicans are rich elitists. I suppose that it just disappoints me that these people are saying we all need to get behind him for the good of the country, but there's no way they'd be saying the same thing if McCain had won.

Again, I'm not trashing Obama here. Just an observation about the people surrounding this whole event. What do you think?

I think you are misinterpreting the message. During the last six years or so, our country was as politically polarized as it has ever been. If you were not old enough to be politically aware in the '90s, you might not realize this. These last seven years were not normal. The message is that we need to quit being so polarized and go back to being a united country, not one divided on political loyalties.

Dem's are not asking for anything from Republicans. On the contrary, they are extending the olive branch. Obama is backing up his words with actions by appointing conservatives to many cabinet positions. If anything, this will annoy many democrats who would prefer to keep the partisanship going now that they have the upper hand in Washington.

I understand that our current president has an approval rating lower than his shoe size and I do realize that there's a definite divide that, in my opinion, was caused by the 2000 Bush/Gore election and the Florida debacle. I think that, at that point, half the country felt completely shafted. I guess I'm playing devil's advocate here by asking "what if McCain won?" Would we have continued to see this polarization, or would the same olive branch be offered by the republicans?

I think the next four years are going to be interesting times.

I love that line there, thank you.

Okay, I'm not huge into politics. Never have been. But Obama may change that for me. I love the guy and I'm VERY curious to see what he's capable of. I've never been happier than when they showed Bush on the plane to get the hell out of our lives.

But we gotta remember, as much as everyone hates Bush, we voted for him... twice!

Now Obama is here and I can't wait to see what would happen. What about McCain? Well I didn't really care about McCain because I disliked him from the start, on so many levels. But would celebrities have taken part in an HBO special event for McCain? Probably not. Unfortunately, it partially is the race. We, as a country, are excited to see a black president. No, he's not our first black present (a href="http://www.diversityinc.com/public/1461.cfm">Click here to see what I mean) but he is the first to accept his background, unlike the other 6. So to a lot, that means he's the first.

To me, a President has to be a good public speaker. He has to be shake hands with the masses, literally or figuratively, kiss the babies and such. Mostly that's a metaphor, but he definitely needs to speak well. Look at Bush. There's dozens if not hundreds of videos on youtube about Bush being a fucking idiot. I'm not sure which is lower, Bush's approval rating or his IQ. He put himself up for presidency for fun. He had fun with it. When the shit hit the fan in 01, he made an attempt to take control. Now, I'm not here to debate about the war and what-not. Point being, he just got rid of the worst president.... ever. McCain or Obama would have been a better choice.

But no, I don't think there would have been this much celebration if McCain had won. Call it a country applauding a black president, call it a lack of drive from McCain, whatever.

I'd just like to voice my complain. I'm sick and fucking tired of the media frenzy. While Obama was having his lunch and there was NOTHING to report, there was still three channels (At least here in my town) covering the nothingness. The march is about 20 minutes away and there's nothing going on. They're talking to supposed experts and analysts. Three channels. I hate the Media. There's been near nothing going on in this country other than Obama, so they have to focus on it. Even Canadian news is being harassed with Obama. I don't see American news focusing much on Mexican or Canadian news.

Like I said, I'm excited, too. But, I feel kind of disenfranchised about this frenzy. It's a lot of pressure to put on one man.
