Late Night Hit Started by: James_Stewart on Jan 27, '09 23:48
It was a cold night when James was standing on the roof of a building a few blocks away from State Street to plan a robbery. The street below was cluttered with cars and people going to into a club. Every time the door to the club opened James heard the music from inside. It sounded like an upbeat swing band. Too fast, he thought. He preferred slower music like quiet jazz bands, but the fast loud music in the club music would be a good distraction for what was planned.

Fucking cold I hate doing a job in the cold!

As people went in the club he noticed a familiar car stop. The driver got out and opened the back door of the car. James couldn't see inside the car his curiosity was getting the best of him though. James thought he knew the car but wasn't sure whoever it was had money.

That looks like it could be one of the targets for tonight's job. Wonder how much they are carrying on them?

The club made millions of dollars every night from gamblers. The job would be a good pay day for James and the family, but what he wanted more than the money was what the club owner kept in his safe.

A noise on the roof startled James. He glanced over his shoulder and saw a shadow walking towards him. James turned around with his hand on his weapon ready to draw at a moments notice.

Vince whistled quietly, a pre-arranged signal that those who had ever worked with him knew. He saw the figure still had his hand on his piece and smiled. No one ever forgot to be careful in this line of work.

"Look, I can't stay." He tried as hard as he could to hid his heavy accent, he hated sounding like a FOB WOP. But, truth be told, he wasn't far removed. "I'm with Mr Money. As long as it goes as planned, as long as no one gets killed, we can do this. But you don't know what you are asking me to risk."

Vince held up his hand to stop the reply. "This man is connected to my Godfather, if he gets wet, we get wet. Capice?"

The suspense!

James nodded and removed his hand from his weapon.

Yea I gotcha. No worries if all goes as planned no one is going to get hurt. I'm not looking to go swimmin in this weather.

James pulls out his pocket-watch.

You better get out of here before the others show up. The less who know your involvement the better.

"Just be careful, if he catches us, I don't know you well enough to speak for you, but I might know you well enough to plant you." Vince shrugged. "My Godfather is old school, You'll see him pull up, he's about twenty-minutes out. Whatever you do, don't let him get his hands under the table, he comes heavy and he shoots to kill."

Vince turned and walked back toward the ladder. "Just inside the kitchen door there is a locker combination is 22-13-19. what you need is in there." Vince started down. "And watch out for Carlo, I wouldn't complain if he slipped and fell, but the owner of this place likes him. My fed warning is going off about him though."

I hear ya. I'll see what I can do about this guy Carlo, what's he look like?

James takes the last few puffs off his cigar and throws it over the side of the building.

Where are the others!

Vince smiled. "Can't really miss him, greasy little guido, real slime-ball likes to hit, always hangs around the owner, bout your height, medium build, looks like he came from the Old Country but can't speak a lick. He's usually trailing the owner, and he usually carries a baton so be careful, he isn't afraid to bust up a couple of boys."

Vince disappeared downstairs just as he saw the rest of the gang show up. "Keep them on a short leash kid. we do this right and we have the keys to the kingdom, we do this wrong and we'll be in the drink."

True to Vince's estimate, Mr Steele's car pulled up not quite twenty minutes later. The suit he wore was perfectly tailored, and he glanced around with the air of a man who was used to things being his way, Vince came out of the shadows and stepped up behind his Godfather, taking his customary place.

He took a moment to throw a look toward the concealed men, and to send off a silent prayer that things would go well. He was heavy, but he didn't want to have to advertise the fact that he was in on this heist. He'd asked his godfather in a roundabout way, and his only response was that as long as no one got wet, he had no problems since the guy who owned the club was 'no friend of ours."

As he stood on the roof of the building on the opposite side of the roof, Brood watched the Important Guy going inside the club and at exactly the same time, the guy on the roof of the club dissapeared inside the building

Wander what's going on there, looks interesting. thought Brood, while he reached in his pocket for a cigaret

Vince hung back, counting to a hundred, he hoped that by now all the people had arrived. Vince tried to keep his mind on what he was doing, trying to guard his godfather's back, and look imposing. Vince also knew that this job was more for his sake than his boss' Mr Steele was a very well protected man, he didn't need a no-name driver, but the man was his Godfather, and his guardian as a child. So he had decided to give the kid a taste, and, since mr steele knew all the movers and shakers, his blessing on something like this was essential

James looked at his watch one last time

Fuck I'm tired of waiting I'm going in alone. I'll just have to go for the safe and forget about everyone else in there.

James walked down the fire escape and across the alley into the back door of the club. He made his way through the kitchen making it look as if he belonged so no one would notice him.

Pulling out his flapjack just in case he knocked on the door twice to see if anyone was inside.

No answer good. This may be easier than I thought.

Opening the door the rest of the way he entered and saw the safe sitting in the corner of the room. James shut the door behind him and locked it.

OK,time for these magic fingers to go to work. A little to the left and a little to the right.

As James worked on cracking the safe's combination he heard a sound close to the door. He stopped ran and turned off the lights and hid behind the door.

The door slowly swung open, and the first person through was Vince. Right behind him was Steele and two other associates of the family. Between them they carried a struggling form. The door closed behind them and Mr Steele took his place behind the desk, Vince at his side, the other two men were facing him holding the struggling form which could now be identified as a young man.

James squinted, he thought he recognized the man but with the blood and the swelling it was hard to say. It was obvious that the young man had been worked over. "What were you planning?"

"I assure you Mr Steele, I wasn't planning anything, you have to believe me." The voice shook, and so did the man from whom it issued.

"You think I don't know what happens in my city? You think I don't see you working my corners without so much as a 'by your leave? without so much as a taste? You think I don't notice when people begin to talk that things that were said in private begin to be public knowlege? So I will ask you one more time. Police or federal?"

Steele leaned forward waiting for his answer.

After watching the Big Guy go inside and the other guy dissapearing from the roof, Brood goes down the fire escape to his hotel room, to see if he has a nice suit for the evening.

A few minutes later he walks out the hotel lobby with a new cigaret, he crosses the street and goes inside the club.

Steele reaches into his coat and pulls out a gun which he lays on the desk. "You are running out of time. If you tell me what I want to know, I'll go easy on you."

"Mr Steele I swear, I don't know what you were talking about."

Mr steele makes a motion with his head, and vince walks over to the young man. Carefully he opens the man's shirt to reveal a microphone.

"something you want to tell me?"
