If we're judging on the merits of best trilogy I think I'd have to go with Lord of the Rings. Personally I prefer Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and the Godfather. But all three of those films, in my opinion, suffer from comparatively weak individual installments (Jedi, Temple of Doom, and Godfather III).
Or does the greatness of two movies justify a lesser third? Empire, Raiders, and Godfather I and II are excellent enough to balance out those lesser installments. Either way, thanks for the interesting question. |

Obviously a big chunk of movie ratings/rankings are subjective. I agree with you about the cycle of infinite endings, but a shoddy 15 minutes of editing doesn't override a whole trilogy. |

I'd like to interject, Lord of the Rings was awesome! A bit of a long ending but that aside, the best trilogy ever made.
I'm not a fan of older films, though I appreciate them. Technology moves on, as does film making, usually for the better. |

Matrix!? First one was practicaly Godly, if they ended it their it would of been a masterpiece. Then came reloaded. I have no griped, personally i thought it was alright, and if they ended it their it still would have been good. Then came Revolution. Ugh. Worst ending to a trilogy ever. I agree with The_Falcon, there's no beating Back to the Future, the first 2 together are brilliant especially the bits in the second one when they return to 1955, and the audacity to just have the third set in the wild wild west is a touch of brilliance.
Having said that I'm mighty fond of The Bourne Trilogy, the third one being (in my opinion) the best film of the 3.
Lord of the Rings is a visually stunning film but it gets to the point in the 3rd where you just want it to be over already, and I would much rather just watch the first 2 films over the 3rd.
The original Matrix film was brilliant, but I feel it got a little over the top towards the end of the trilogy.
Still haven't seen The Godfather (I know, I know, I own it too, it's just finding the time). |

Rush Hour trilogy.
Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker act well together and
it is fun to watch.
Godfather and Lord of the Rings are also excellent. |
