How to Impress a Boss Started by: Angel on Feb 09, '09 21:03
She sits at a table in an open air cafe enjoying the sun and warmth. A tea and crumpet on the table in front of her beside a pile of papers. She leafs through the pile until she finds what she is looking for. Turning her head when she hears her name called she is approached by a teenage boy. He is dressed in rags, his face dirty...

Yo, Angel, can I'z join ur crew!!? I makez good munniez.

Saddened by the obvious lack of thought put into this request she shakes her head no and goes back to her paperwork... Thinking back to the previous day she smiles and searches for yet another piece of paper and thinks of how the whole incident went down. Her memory clear as she begins to recall how IT happened... How that one priceless moment had made her feel. She shivers at the memory, in elation rather than disgust.

For those of you out there looking for work here is an example of how to impress a boss and make a lasting impression.. Below is a scenario that played out in my newly renovated offices in the warehouse district... I'm not saying I expect everyone to pay as much attention to detail or put as much effort into their request for employment as much as I am saying that if you do put some time and effort into impressing the person you ask for a job it will pay off. Who could forget something as impressive as this?

Your first introduction to your future boss is the most important, well at least it is to me. If I have someone come to me quickly spewing some garbage about being awesome and wanting to join my family I'll think about it.. For a second. Then possibly decline their request. However, if someone introduces themselves as thoroughly as the following transcription of one of my recent hire's request for employment I will remember them, I will give them a job, and I will do so KNOWING that they will put as much effort into working for me as they did asking for their job.

In short, the amount of effort you put into a request will always speak of the amount of effort you will put into the crew, family, or subcrew that you end up joining.

I have changed the name of the person to protect their innocence.

AliceInWonderland stepped of the Greyhound bus and into the golden California sunlight. She took in a deep breath of sea breeze air and sighed with a smile. A few blocks of a walk took her right to the ocean. She watched as both women and men played on the sandy shores and AliceInWonderland really appreciated this moment in her life. The sun was starting to set, the ocean glistened with red, orange and yellow colors. One look over her shoulder and she would see the busy city of Los Angeles.

Everything about this place felt perfect.

AliceInWonderland dragged her pale self out of the setting sun and warm sand and into the city. It was time to find some shelter, there would be plenty of days to get a tan.

Now that she found the perfect city she had to find the perfect gang to join with. She new they would try to fool her or even try to school her, but she had a mind of her own. AliceInWonderland knew what she wanted and that's what she was going to get. She passed through a few of the neighborhoods in the LA area and that's what they did. Tried to change her and rearrange her. She had a life to live and when she stumbled into the Warehouse district AliceInWonderland knew that this is where she was going to be living it.

Dropping in on some of the business attractions AliceInWonderland discovered who ran this area and what they were all about. The smile that fell on her face told everyone she liked what she heard. A strong woman helping a strong man run a city. Check. This woman having goals. Check. Goals that are more then just to break all her friends out of jail and acquire esteemed ranks. Check. Some where AliceInWonderland could actually put in effort and feel like it was appreciated. Check. Some where where she could also help her crew leader achieve their own goals and where she could achieve her goals. Check.

AliceInWonderland went over all these things as she was walking towards the headquarters of Angel. That was her name, the warehouse district captain of Los Angeles. AliceInWonderland had pulled it out of some bum and also the location of her building. She was half expecting it to be the wrong place or a dirty set up for new people in town when she got to the right place. Thankfully it was neither, but when she did start poking around the very large building a large man came up behind her and grabbed her.

Well that was her own fault, of course the place had security. She blamed the sun for making her less street smart, it was just so pretty. AliceInWonderland was forced to face the man who demanded what she was doing her. She asked to speak to his boss and once he finally released her she dusted her shirt off and followed him into the building. He gave her a good pat down first of course, but she wasn't carrying anything.

The three flights of stairs they walked up reminded AliceInWonderland that she needed to work out more. The idea of running on the beach each morning sounded good. Her thoughts were quickly disturbed as she was basically forced into a room desk and a plant. The room didn't have anything else in it, not even a window. Poor plant.

A women she could only hope was Angel entered from a side door.

Nice place you got here.

AliceInWonderland said and quickly decided to cut the crap.

I'd like to work for you.

She smiles sweetly and pays her bill before walking off into the LA sunset.

Brick reads the exchange, turning page after page after page, until finally reaching the end.

That was quite the read, but there has GOT to be a better way. I know, thug speak is not the way to go. How 'bout something a little shorter, still full of meaning, and a concerted effort to impress? Do we all have to write novels? Or give 2 hour long monologues?

Opens up his script and begins to recite.

To be or not to be, that is the question.

Whether...

I mean, I can monologue with the best of 'em. Well, not the best of 'em, but I can monologue. Sure, it won't make as much sense as Alice made, but it'll make more sense than: Ken I joyne ur krew? too.

But I get your point and I agree. A thoughtful request in somewhere between 5 and 25000 words, has some significant thought behind it and is putting your best foot forward.

Note - you said you would possibly decline their request. Are you just being nice? Did you really mean you'd laugh at them until they ran off crying in embarassment?

I have seen or heared of enough low level requests of people in the past and is often shameful to see. If a person can't make an effort to be associated with the family why bother accepting them. I enjoyed the thought put into this but if a leader received 50 of these scenarios a day, i doubt would ever leave office; maybe even need to sleep there the night.

Very nice though

JR reads the request intently soaking in every word.

Now there is a request into a family. This is a person who you know is going to be a vital part of Angels family. I think that we have all seen or at least heard about the way not to approach a CL looking for a job, and I think that we have all heard the right way to do so, but this, in my opinion, is in a league of it's own. Of course not everyone is going to be able to write something like this, and granted it probably didn't take that long to do, but this is how we see who we can depend on and who isn't really going to put in the effort. Props to "Alice" and may others follow your example.

JR puts down the paper and continues about his day.

Claps at being so impressed

That was a real good request, but I agree with Brick that you don't have to write a novel to get respect. Nice story though :)

I would have to side with Shady and brick, you dont need something so long that you lose interest (not saying that i lost intrest in the story you had angel) but it does need to show, that they are interested, have good qualities for the game, and have good linguistic skills, after all, this is text based and speech is very vital.

Very true IJAG, Im proud of you, you captured my thoughts exactly.

Thats a little scary but I do agree!

I agree that this is an extremely well done request and that not all are expected to be as well written, however, the point behind sharing this example was to encourage those new and returning to this thing of ours to put some effort into their requests. To show that it is something that some leaders feel is important.

It wasn't about "hey it needs to be as long or as awesome as this one", it was meant to be a "Hey, this is what others are doing. Use it as an example."

Content and quality will always be more important than quantity.. Or at least they will be to some.

An honorable man once said (or something like this) :

"Joining a family is the most important decision you'll ever make. So if you don't put enough effort, then you just don't belong here."

I'm 100% agree with him. So, you must put enough effort in your application. Period.
