Until Now.

WT steps out of his 1931 Ford and walks across the street. He flips his cigarette into a near by gutter and steps up onto the soapbox. He calls waits for the mafioso to assemble before he begins to speak. Clearing his throat with a sip of the Tennessee's Finest, he begins to speak.

I would like to clear up something once and for all, for my own sanity.

Every so often, I am sitting in a coffee shop and over hear conversations. People comparing the leaders of today to the leader of the Old World. But, is this the right comparison? Should the history from the Old World be relevent in this "New World"? People speak of the old world fondly as if it was this worlds history as well. People say how Leaders used to be active in the streets representing their Families, and were killed off if they did not.

A name comes to mind of one such incident. A leader named SlutsRule_3, authed by CountD, was taken out for not keeping up a street presence. Should that rule pertain to today? Should leaders and their families make an effort to keep up a presence in the streets. If the rules of old were still alive and well, most of them would be dead, I am afraid. I am not naming names, or placing blame. This is a public debate. But should leaders today be compared to those of old? Or is this a completely different deal? Please, I would like your opinions. Keep responses kind and well mannered as possible.

Should they be compared? Personally, I believe that's a question for each individual to answer. Should someone wish to compare our current leaders to those from the old world, those in the recent history of these lands, heck... even those leaders from legit businesses that I dispise so much... they are free and open to do so. Whether they find any benefit from this? An entirly different question.

As for the ever ongoing query of 'is a street presence important', again, it comes down to the individual. Personally, I could never stand under a leader who I didn't have confidence in to hold their own in any debate thrown in front of them. If a leader can't hold their own in a simple bout of verbal sparring, how can they ever be expected to command and control whole cities. This however is a personal belief and not something that I believe is, or should be, held by the entire community.

Is a street presence the most important quality? Certainly not. The private discussions held in discrete mails or in our local coffee shops have a far greater impact on this thing of ours. The impact of each and every action has a far greater impact.... A street presence is just one of the multitude of ingredients which is required of a truly great leader.

Realising the whiskey is beginning to show in his discussion, decides he should try and sum it up in something approaching a tangable way.

Every leader will have their critics. Every leader will have their weak points and their strong points, street presence being but a single box which may or may not be ticked. Should people wish to compare them to the leaders of the past, so be it. If they weren't having a go about that, it would no doubt be over something equally as debatable as being 'fair criteria'. Nobody ever said being a leader was easy!

You can please all of the people some of the time. Some of the people all of the time....

The rest, you just gotta figure how to shut the hell up so you can get on with business!

Heading home, Nicky notices a Detroit associate addressing a crowd. Curiosity get the best of him and he motions for his driver to pull over. Stepping out and he approaches the crowd, lights a smoke and begins to speak,

Well clearly, by simply addressing you, I do feel that leaders should have a street presence. But to what extent, seems to be the big question.

I do not want to get away from your questions. To answer you, I do not think it is fair to compare the old and new simply by their actions or lack there of in the streets. Times have changed, and it is not just the leaders who have changed. The people have changed. There once was a time that disrespect shown to any leader was a death sentence. Now we have come to accept the fact that civilians and thugs are allowed to render their opinion no matter how disrespectful and still find homes rather than a bullet to the head. So if there is a comparison to be made it should be with the time as a whole rather than the leaders alone.

I do not want to give off the impression that a street presence is not important. However, in general and I can only speak for myself. In this time, I feel there are more important ways to be viewed as a leader. How do the other leaders view you? Are your members well mannered and respectful to other families? Most importantly, how does your own family view you? Would it not be fair to say that we have lost more leaders to anyone of these reasons rather than their street presence?

I know the irony here is that I came out to debate this topic not having come out to the streets very often. But when I come out to the streets I would like to have something to say. An opinion that I feel is worth offering. I do not want to come out to just say yes or no or simply to hear my own voice. I do not feel what I have or have not said effects how effective a leader I am or will continue to be.

Putting his smoke out with his shoe, Nicky tips his hat to the crowd and gets back in his sedan

I do think that they should have to be activly conversing in the streets, but most of them do, you see Digger, Angel, Guardian, Obizzle, Stapled, OtisDriftwood and the others too in the streets just as much as aanybody else, maybe more, but ya, i think it should be enforced but dont agree thet they should be killed if they dont, thats a little over-board, afteral they are your leaders, they can do whatever they want, whenever they want unless the godfather/mother has a problem with it.
