Streets and business overhaul Started by: Nello on Jul 24, '14 05:17

I feel like this game simply does not live up to its potential. It is unique for the fact that it combines forum roleplaying with standard mafia browser game, but does not do it well enough in my opinion and could do so much better. I wish to state several changes that I would personally like to be implemented, and I would like to see the other players' opinion on them.

1. It should be more RP-centric. The streets are the place where we play our characters, roleplay situations and live our virtual criminal life. Or it's supposed to be, but it's not. It should be a forum dominated by good roleplays and creative stories, yet it is dominated by people pointing fingers at one another, speaking from atop a wooden box, and protection orders. What I suggest? Make the streets the main source of XP instead of the jails. Think about it, wouldn't be better to actually put some effort into attaining the most of your experience points, instead of going to the jail page and clicking a single button? Make it that each city (hell, maybe even each district) has its own streets forum. So it actually makes a difference which city you are in apart from drug prices.

2. It should be more business centric. Mobsters are businessmen, first and foremost. They are also burglars and robbers and carjackers, but the thing that defines a mafioso is that he's a businessman who deals in illegal business. However, we don't actually do any business here to make money. We have casinos (that are no longer user-owned) and DFPs and that's about it. My idea is making business district the main source of making money, apart from the drugs. For example, petties and felonies could be removed after reaching Made Man. Upon receiving your button, you start doing the real stuff and get into serious money, you don't put a mask over your face and rob post offices anymore like a small-time crook. How much money you get depends on several things, like how well your thread is written, what type of business it is, how many visitors it gets, and also your rank. Obviously a Consigliere is going to earn more than a Made Man. And you will have to make collections every period of time. An hour, two hours, a day, to be decided. As you increase in rank, you get more money from it and can make more businesses.

3. It should decide what era is supposed to be set in. The game is supposedly set in the 1920's and 30's, yet it features drug trade, which wasn't done at the time, instead of the thing that basically made gangsters rich: alcohol. Al Capone and others didn't sell coke to make money, they bootlegged alcohol during Prohibition. So I think drug page should stay the same but renamed for immersion sake. Instead of marijuana, heroin and cocaine you deal with beer and scotch and wine.

And also, even thought we have already covered this and it has been refused, I still think ranks should be done better. A Consigliere can't be above a Boss, c'mon.

Report Post Tip
The majority of players are uninterested in actual role playing in the form of posting in the streets or the business district. They appear to only have an interest in logging on, buying/selling a few drugs, shooting something, then using some form of chat to talk to friends, allies, ect. It was suggested in another thread recently about decreasing jail XP and increasing Street xp, wasn't well received, nor did it garner a lot of support.

I for one agree with you on the posting aspects, and most of what you've suggested for the business districts. I just don't seeing the majority of the user base wanting anything to do with it.

I'm new to the game (about 3 days), but I think the idea is great.

1. Like Nello suggested Mafioso were businessman running restaurants (as cover for alcohol selling), betting stores (with secret casinos within), collecting protection money and so on. The old mafia were furious when the young ones started selling drugs. So its logical that the main income of XP and money should be running a business.

2. Its sounds hard and is not optimal but there are a lot of games with mafia background where the only things you do is pushing buttons. If someone is not interested in roleplay he can play them. I think the roleplay part is what make MR unique and that should be bolstered.

I'm not that good in roleplaying and have a lot to think before I can write down just one line but I'm willing to learn and if the main income of XP would be the streets my motivation for writing would go up for good

Big problem is that streets has become not a roleplaying place but a place you "speak out in public". So any actual roleplaying there feels out of place. That should change. And I think when people mention how someone "works hard" in this game, they should mean real effort not ability to play actively. There are people who simply don't have time to do 7 jails a day and collect the XP. If this is a text based RPG then it should award those who put effort in their writing more than the lazy click monkeys.

I'm confused why you state this; as not only has this been the case since the beginning - it is also one of the benefits of having the forum in place.

The Streets should be a mix of straight RP, as well as relevant announcements/discussion regarding the happenings of the game. If there are no public announcements – how is the average Joe going to be able to follow the events that are unfolding within the game? The abundance of new crews that have set up over the last months has likely overcrowded The Streets with content that is far too similar/bland, and difficult to interact with.

Alright yes, announcements are indeed useful and needed. So you got me on that one. But they shouldn't be the only thing that is present on the streets.
