okay apollo. im going to explain this one time. He could not get get on his account. so he told his girlfriend to put the post on the thread from her account. He did not dupe, he did not use anyone else's account. He simply asked her to post it because he couldnt. now as for this bullshit.
this is just simply untrue. as is the bit about clinton you have put in. If you will notice, when regean was president, it was a democratically controled congress. When Clinton came into the offive, it evened out. almost completley even. When bush went into office, it became democratic again. Congress controls almost everything. Not the president. COngeress passes the budget. Congress approves the wars. Congress controls the tax code and the number of jobs in this country. the president has absolutley no control. the legislative branch has the most power out of the three. They make the laws and can kick a president to the curb if they wan. the judicial branch can review the other two branches, and can change the interpretation of the constitution with a single decision. Executive, on the other hand, has almost no power. He can control troops, but cannot declare war. He cannot pass laws, he cannot review judicial decisions. the president has become a scapegoat for congress's mistakes and failures. If you all want "change" in this country, overhaul the legislative branch. get rid of all the incumbent senetors and reps. we need an all new, perfectly balanced congress, like it was designed to be. Obama will change nothing. He has no power to change anything. he cannot snap his fingers and make all the problems in this world disappear, as so many people think he can. Take a look at his stimulus plan. If you take the time to read it and see all the little abominations in it, you might change your mind about him. half of the things in that bill are for stupid things like a new frisbee golf field in San Antionio, Texas. Obama gave them 5 million for that. the bill is loaded with pork, and congress passed it far too fast, hence the AIG problem. had they read the fine print, they would see that those aig executives had the bonuses in their contracts, AIG was legally required to pay out those bonuses. Congress should have known this. You should know this. open your eyes people. |

Thanks for the lecture on politics, but I did spend five years at Kent State University majoring in political science, graduating first in my class. You can verify this if you think I'm talking shit, most people here that know me know my real name, which you will find as the 2004 recipient: http://www.kent.edu/polisci/UndergraduatePrograms/awards.cfm It's safe to say I know what I'm talking about. You are right that Congress controls almost everything, but the President has a lot of influence, especially among his own party. The President also prepares the budget, which is then approved by Congress. This is a formality, as budgets are never disapproved. You are also correct that Congress was controlled by the Democrats under Reagan. And you are probably right that real change will come with an overhaul of the legislative branch, but I don't think that will be enough. The "political game" needs to be changed. That is something that will require alot more than removing one constituency representative and replacing him or her with another. We need a more educated electorate, who will vote for candidates who promise more than pork. That's about where you stopped being correct. What exactly about Clinton was I incorrect about? That he took a huge deficit and turned it into a surplus? That's a simple fact, not subject to interpretation. That he signed the Welfare Reform Act? Uh, yep, he did. He did that in 1994. The Republicans took over Congress in 1994 (see: Newt Gingrich's Contract with America), and controlled it for the entirety of Clinton's remaining six years in office. The Dems never controlled Congress under Bush. Congress approves wars? Fucking lol. In theory, maybe, but not in reality since the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution. Congress is given constitutional authority to declare war, the President has Commander in Chief powers to determine the execution of the war. This has been a topic of contention in recent years, with various interpretations as to what the Presidential powers contain. There has not been a Congressional declaration of war in our lifetimes, yet in Vietnam, Bosnia, Nicaragua, Panama, and Iraq (twice) we were in a de facto state of war. The President can also create Executive Orders, which are indistinguishable from legislation. GWB made more executive orders than any president in history. Congress controls the tax code and the number of jobs? Congress can create tax related legislation, sure. I'm not sure what that has to do with this. The number of jobs? You must have pulled that out of your ass. The economy controls the number of jobs, not any governing body. Congress can "kick a president to the curb" if they want? Again, I'm not sure how this is relevant, and I assume you mean impeachment. This has been done once in our history. True, Obama cannot snap his fingers and make anything happen. It will require much more effort than that. The thing is, he is dedicated to putting forth that effort, unlike his predecessor. Bush had an agenda that was only devoted to his self-interests. He went into office with a hard-on for Iraq, and for economic policies that would reward his voting base of the top 5% of the wealthiest people in the country. His campaigning tactics consisted of polarization of party lines and negative campaigning. That is certainly not something that is good for the country as a whole. These are the things Obama is addressing when he speaks of Change. He is not a miracle worker, but his focus is correct. As for the stimulus package, there is no mention of bonuses in the small print. This is an economic plan, not a contract. The "pork projects" that you described are not traditional pork. These projects are intended to create jobs. That frisbee park? Someone needs to build it. That's where the jobs come in. You might recall that Franklin D. Roosevelt used a similar spending plan to pull us out of the Great Depression. The Tennessee Valley Authority, the building of the Hoover Dam, etc, were not your typical "pork projects". They were infrastructure projects designed to create jobs, and it worked. (I won't bring up that you contradicted yourself in this part by saying "Obama gave them 5 million for that", after you stated earlier that it is Congress that makes such allocations. Oops, I just did it!) Most of the exuberance about Obama is not anyone thinking he is a miracle worker. It is simply relief that he is in office as opposed to Bush, relieving us of the failures of the previous administration. Who knows, he might have a very mediocre term, but at least it will not be scarred with horrible conduct and lies of the last eight years, and for that many of us are grateful. |

I can't say it better than Butt_Ox did, and he certainly has more in his resume to back up his arguments than I ever will. But I do have one note: You said, and I quote, that "the president has absolutley no control". Well then... what the hell are we doing here in this thread? Or did you mean to say "the president has no control over things I don't like that happened when my guy was there, but now that a guy I don't like is president he should have control over"? |

butt_ox. first off I would like to thank you for actually reading what I had to say. I would also like to point out that you know what your talking about. I am, after all, 17, and I go by what I have learned thus far. I may not be at your level, but I know a helluva lot more than most people. |
