Sal proposal to Evza<em> Started by: Sal_Pirazzi on Mar 27, '09 22:58
Sal gazed upward, examining the sunny day. His eyes perused the beautifully bright royal blue sky, complete with clouds interspersed like lopsided scoops of vanilla ice cream. A cool breeze ruffled his hair,

a brief respite on this otherwise warm Sicilian midmorning.

The sound of an engine's roar suddenly filled his ears. He looked to his left to see Evza turning the ignition of his roadster. She glanced at him with a wide grin before reaching over to give him a quick kiss.

"Now that's an engine."

She backed happily out of the gravel driveway before zooming off down the country road. Sal smiled and relaxed back in the passenger seat, his arm falling around Ev's shoulders. She flashed him a smile before pressing down harder on the pedal. The speedometer crept upward as they began to chat, the wind now whipping through the car and mixing Evza's loud, hoarse laughter with her wild coppery ringlets.

They gazed around at the beautiful scenery of Sal's homeland—Agrigento, Sicily—as he pointed out various sites filled with fond memories along the way. After about an hour, Evza parked on the top of a hill overlooking a long stretch of the Syracuse beach. After switching off the engine, she stared out at the breathtaking beauty of the beach, entranced by the deep cerulean ripples of the Mediterranean. Sal's arm tightened slightly around her shoulders, silently appreciating the view alongside her. Ev turned around to grin delightedly at him.

"God, this beats a day in Grand Isle any old time!"

She hopped suddenly out of the car, quickly popping the trunk open and lugging out a large wicker basket. With the light clanking of dishes and silverware echoing in her wake, she began to make her way down the hill cheerfully. Sal shook his head with a chuckle before picking up her forgotten hat from the dashboard and hurrying down the hill after her. When he arrived at its foot, she was already spreading out a gingham blanket onto the sand. Sal jogged up to her and stuck her hat onto her head, causing her to start and giggle.

"Oh, my, I don't want to get too freckled, now, do I?"

Ev laughed and straightened the floppy-brimmed hat on her head before reaching up to plant a quick peck on Sal's lips. She quickly plopped down onto the blanket and began to unpack the variety of delicious local cuisine prepared by none other than Rita Pirazzi, Sal's mother. Evza inquired as to the name of each dish, repeating it before she took a bite.

"That? That's Caponata. Kind of an eggplant salad."

"Ca-puh-nay-ta?"

"Cah-pon-ah-tah."

"Ca-pun-a-ta."

"Close enough."

Sal grinned and lit a cigar, enjoying the midday sun and watching a few fellow beachgoers set up camp several hundred feet away. After rounding out the hearty meal with a bit of heavenly tiramisu, Evza fell onto her back happily while beaming up with closed eyes at the sunlight. Sal joined her for only a brief moment, since she quite suddenly jumped up again, her teeth flashing down at him briefly before she took off toward the shore.

"Last one to the water's edge is a rotten egg!" Sal watched her for a moment before lurching to his feet and duly racing after her. Alas, the wet sand was already oozing between her bare toes as she turned back to him triumphantly. Sal simply chuckled and came to a stop, picking her up and twirling her around in the air briefly before setting her back down to steal a kiss. Grinning, she linked arms with him and set off down the beach. Their fingers were soon intertwined as they strolled peacefully along, watching the gulls diving in and out of the sparkling sea. As the sun began to slide toward the horizon, they paused to admire the strips of red cutting through the sky and reflected onto the rippling sapphire waves of the water. Evza looked over to Sal, admiring his silhouette for a moment before breaking away and running into the water, throwing a mischievous grin over her shoulder before continuing to splash in, still fully clothed.

"Come in for a swim, hon! The water's fine!"

Sal simply watched, stunned, for a moment before laughing and following her into the sea. Under the closing dusk, the two played as if they were young children, splashing one another and giggling—two young lovers enjoying the world as though for the first time. The crowd on the beach thickened with more couples coming out to make long-lasting memories, but none seemed to have the courage to join Sal and Evza out in the water. As the sun slipped beneath the horizon, the couple finally made their way back to shore, their clothes dripping onto the sand as they pack up their belongings and haul them back to the car. They zoomed off in the last strands of twilight, nestled on the somewhat sandy gingham blanket. Arriving at Sal's family's spacious family farm, Sal hauled in the wicker picnic basket as Evza cleaned out the last bits of sand from the car. As he entered the kitchen, Rita Pirazzi looked up from her cooking with a smile. After he set the basket down next to the sink, he pulled his mother into a hug, kissing the top of her head. She laughed and began to speak to him in Sicilian.

"I can already tell you had a good day!"

"We did! We even swam in the sea!"

Rita nodded, tucking a strand of grey hair behind her ear. Her gaze slid over the room, inspecting the corners of the kitchen that had been the center of her life. This redheaded girl that Sal had brought with him had such restless eyes—she'd never be satisfied in a house with six children running around her. Of course, a woman that liked the home life wasn't the kind Sal needed. Rita gave another silent nod before making her way to a cupboard, dusting her hands off on her apron before reaching upward to open it. "You know, Salvatore, that sure is some girl you've got there. She reminds me of your Nana Victoria. She knows what she's doing." The older woman strained far into the back of the cupboard, finally pulling out an antique flour pot. She set it on the table carefully before looking at Sal with her hands on her hips.

"And you know what? Your Nana agrees. Women like that aren't very easy to come by, you know." As she spoke, the door to the dining room was pushed open by none other than Victoria Demarco herself—the ancient matriarch and familial hub of Sal's countless relatives. He opened his mouth to greet her warmly, but was cut off by the old woman, who had apparently been listening to the conversation.

"Yes, very hard to find a woman like her anywhere. I've seen the way she looks at you. You've hit a spot in her no one else has. Wouldn't do at all to pass her by." The woman's black eyes flitted over him in an almost wary way. "You don't plan on doing that, now, do you?"

Sal's eyes widened as he stammered out a response.

"Wha—no, Nana! She's...very special to me, too." Sal looked down at the clean wooden table, thinking. "She's the best woman I've ever met." He looked back up to smile at the two women looking at him with eyebrows raised. "I mean, I've even taken her here to meet you two. I can't remember doing that with anyone else I was dating before."

Rita and Victoria smiled at one another, exchanging a nod before Rita pulled off the lid to the flour pot.

"Well, then, we want you to give her what's in this pot here. You know what it means to the family." Rita's face broke into a wrinkled grin. "And good luck, bambino mio."

"What were you and your mother conspiring about before dinner, anyway?" Evza grinned from across the gingham blanket. They were now stretched out on the expansive lawn of a remote hill, gazing up at the stars. Evza balanced a glass of fine wine on her stomach, one hand wrapped loosely around the stem of the glass.

Sal took a deep breath and looked over to her with a nervous smile.

"Well...you, actually."

Ev's face became curious as she looked at Sal.

"Me? What about me?"

Sal sat up on the blanket, reaching into his jacket and pulling out some small, glittering thing.

"Well, she wanted to tell me how much she likes you...and how you remind her of my Nana."

He fidgeted slightly with the object in his hands before smiling warmly at her.

"They're both very happy with you."

Evza returned his smile before setting down her wine and scooting closer to him, noticing he was gently shivering.

"Well, that's sweet of them. Are you cold, hon?"

"No...just...Evza—" He held the object in his hands out into the moonlight,

revealing it to be an intricately decorated jewelry box.

"Ev, I know it's late but I must ask you something."

Evza sat up with a curious look before breaking into a smile with a nervous giggle.

"Honey, I'm having a great time on vacation. And the stars are more beautiful than I've ever seen them."

Sal chuckles and shakes his head.

"No! That's not it. I have something I want to say, to ask you."

Evza reached her hand out to rest reassuringly on Sal's thigh.

"Sal! Just ask for Chrissakes. Hell, you haven't had problems asking me things before."

Sal took a deep breath, drawing together all his reserves of courage (why is it so much easier to look men with guns in the eyes than ask a girl a question?) and looked Evza straight in the eyes.

"Evza, I've...well, I've never done this before—none of it. I've never introduced my mother or great grandmother to any of the other women I've dated. You've probably figured this out, but my family is very old fashioned and strict."

Sal rested his rough palm tenderly against Evza's cheek as a sincere smile spread across his face.

" All the same, they feel the same way about you as I do. They know what I've known for months now; they both approve of you without question. They gave me this."

He held the jewelry box up slightly, its sparkle drawing her eyes to it momentarily before she looked back up to Paul, a half-confused smile covering her face.

"It was supposed to go to my oldest brother Paul, but he...well, he's dead now, as you know. So instead they gave it to me and...and now I want to give it to you."

Sal opened the discolored jewelry box, displaying a flawless, eight-carat, blue diamond. Evza stared at it in disbelief as he continued.

"This ring has been in my family for ten generations, Ev. The jewel was found in the Nile of Egypt by one of my ancestors and set into the solid gold band. They call it the Blue Nile Diamond. My mother took it off when my father died a few years ago."
Sal looked deep, almost imploringly into Evza's eyes.

"Evza, will you marry me and make it the eleventh generation?"
Evza stared for a moment, then managed to nod her head, wordless. She then cleared her throat and weakly managed to squeak out a happy, hoarse word: "Yes." She broke into a laugh and managed another, louder, yes, throwing her arms around Sal's neck. She then began to call over his shoulder and into the night, still holding him tightly in a warm embrace: "Yes! Yes, yes, yes, a million times, yes!"

After a moment of happily embracing her back, Sal pulled away, removing the diamond from its box and sliding it onto her finger. She giggled as it slipped on perfectly—as if it was made for her. She admired the diamond's brilliant glow under the moonlight for a bit before suddenly throwing herself onto her fianc again, this time sending him flat on his back. They both gazed happily into one another's eyes for a moment before sharing a passionate kiss. Sal lay back, wrapping his arms around her and thinking to himself that he's the luckiest man alive.
