| Mafia Markets? Player owned and opperated! | Started by: JonnyBe_RED on Nov 13, '14 01:58 |

Problem: The business district is not much more than the streets part deux. This isn't to say the business districts are completely without merit, but they aren't really "business" at the moment. I want to fix that, while introducing a new element to the economy. Solution: We could get the admins to code in the ability for players to create a business in the business district, then have a button to be able to take that business "public." Once that is done, the player can sell shares of their business in a marketplace. Once shares are bought, the player who owns the business can pay dividends to his/her investors, though will not be required to do so. When going public, in the announcement, they can state what % they will be sharing as dividends. For example, I promise to pay 25% of profits as dividends. There's nothing making me, but my word is on the line. Now, if your business is a "bar," shares won't trade for much (or anything) since you can't really make any in game money that way. However, if you are running a loan shark ring, or a gambling ring, or making suits for players, then I might want to buy a few shares as this could actually make money for you, and therefore, for me, since I will be able to collect dividends. Once I own the shares, I have two options. I can keep them and hope to earn dividends. Or I can sell them to another player (including the owner of the business!), hopefully for more than I paid to get them. This system kills two birds with one stone. First of all, it encourages players to be more active with RP and posting, and to be more creative with ways to earn money from their fellow players. Second of all, it adds another layer to the economy. Difficulties: Coding, coding, and coding. I have no idea how difficult this would be. Perhaps an admin can chime in with a comment letting us know how hard it would be to do this. The other problem will be getting players to buy into it. I honestly think this won't be much of an issue, as it's another way to deepen the RP experience while also earning some extra cash for those pesky BGs. Please comment below with suggestions or voice your support. If you don't like the idea, please include a reason why so we may be able to improve it. TL;DR: Nope, sorry. This one is already edited down. I put some time into writing it, so go back and read it! |

That would be up to you. Let's say you are good with Photoshop. You make avatars or suits or whatever the kids are calling them these days for people. You charge 5,000,000 bucks for one. You made money. You share that with your shareholders. Also, when people buy shares from you at the beginning, you set the price. So you sell 100 shares for 1,000 each. That's 1,000,000 bucks. You have to decide if you think that is worth it. It's a quick buck, but how much will you have to pay out in dividends. Or will you stiff your shareholders? |

I don't think this kills as many birds as you think. One of the big issues that have been discussed back and forth for years has been monetizing the Business District. A while ago we had the business stock exchange that basically paid out in parallel with the businesses' thread activity and quality of content. I can't recall precisely why it was removed, but there are generally a host of problems with these ideas. First, you have the problem that MR actually ran into a few months back. Individuals were going into bars and restaurants and copy/pasting the menu in each of their posts as if they were "reading" the menu each time and picking an option. This inflated the value of the post and inflated the stat ("Street Smarts" or "Vision") that was boosted by it. This is probably the primary concern with making the Business District a money-producing component of the game. Second, the focus of the Business District is RP. You said it's the Streets "part deux," but this is actually a very poor comparison. The Streets are where mobsters come together as a group to discuss certain matters of importance. Auths, speeches, protection orders, etc. are all done through the Streets, and that is its primary purpose. The Business District has never and will never be used for auth speeches, protection orders, or anything of real importance because of its very limited audience. The BD is really just a place for more hardcore RPers to orient themselves with each other and RP out events. Plus, the BD isn't supposed to be repetitive; you should write something different for each business you visit. But I think if you make businesses capable of generating money, you'll get a lot of repetitive posts. Not because we want to abuse the system, but because we like making as much money as we can; and that means visiting businesses early and often. Third, your suggestion doesn't actually involve creating additional money. You want the business to just be a means of transferring money from one player to another in exchange for some service. This is done already without the "storefront," as suit makers are all over the place. Additionally, you mention setting up a "shareholder" system, but there's no reason for one. Shares are sold by by a company to build up capital, which is then used to produce things, which are then sold and the profits are shared equally among the, you guessed it, shareholders. The mechanism you propose has no need for initial capital; suit makers don't need any initial "investment" in order to start their business. Photoshop costs no in-game money, writing a thread costs no in-game money, and selling a suit to a player costs no in-game money; so there is no need for investment or shareholders. I don't mean to rain on your parade, but this isn't the first time this sort of thing has been suggested. I don't think there's any good way of monetizing the Business District without making it terribly bland, repetitive, dull, and casual. It'll be used to farm cash and stats and not as a means of establishing a character. |

Taylor, Thank you for your post. I think perhaps I didn't make things as clear as I could have. I'm not talking about providing money to players based on posts or length of posts or number of posts. With my idea, a person could make money without ever posting a single thing in the BD. That isn't the goal, of course, but I only say that to prove a point. I agree that there is no "need" for a suitmaker to gain startup capital for the business of making suits for players. I also agree that this goes on now all the time without my idea. I just want to add to the BD in a way that makes it relevant again. If I make suits for players, I don't need the capital from issuing shares for making suits, but I sure as heck need it for other things in game, either BGs or credits or whatever. So while the capital raised may not go toward suits, I still want it. Then, when I sell a suit to another player, I can distribute that profit to reward those shareholders who backed me to begin with. It's kind of like a risky loan operation more than a traditional stock market. I agree that the business district isn't the same as the streets. My point in saying it was streets part deux was to point out that both places are just a venue for RP. The content of the RP may be slightly different, granted, but both are just RP. So why not include bars and other BD posts in the streets? What harm would that do? Just do away with the BD since it has the same purpose as the streets, i.e. to RP and gain the boosts that go along with that. I don't want to monetize the district itself, meaning not the posts. I want to generate actual businesses in the BD and monetize those. I hope that clears up some things. Thank you again for your input. |

I think what you're describing could be done without any added code. A user could create a business, sell suits, collect money, and distribute that to "shareholders" without adding any functionality. All of those things, as you suggested, would be done by the player anyway, so there's no real reason to automate it in code. |

Excellent suggestion JonnyBe_RED , this would only be a beginning and I'm sure if implemented we would roll with it and start tweaking it to make it work. I like the idea that the value of the business is completely up to the community and the buying and selling of the business' shares. This could also create a whole host of side businesses, advertisers for example. People who can be brokers and middlemen for the goods and services provided. I am also thinking that bars could have items which help to reduce timers or provide small impermanent boosts to defense or stealth or attack. Who knows what other possibilities could arise from this. But yeah maybe like Drug Front Properties certain families can purchase and operate store fronts or restaurants/bar - car dealerships and have to role play them to maintain them and provide the goods. It's a start but it sure would make the business district more dynamic and interesting. |

Criminals were some of the smartest entrepreneurs, I can list countless examples. They weren't just thugs with a gun and a bad attitude. |

WolfHaley I think that is one of the keys to this suggestion. If you don't want to participate, you don't have to take your business "public" then you can continue to post in the Business District just as you are now, and nothing will be any different for you or your experience. |

| That's the point. The players would determine the value of the stock by how much they buy! So it is self regulating! | |

yeah but even the lowest quality knocked together in 5 minutes could infuse money into the game, also what would be the situation if a next of kin was to take over a position would it be master account linked? or a case of new business, new post and clutter to the district of repear posts possibly? |

I see the business district as massively under utilised. I suggested 5 years ago that we tied DFPs into the business district, not only because it would be a realistic development, but it would also reward those people who are prepared to get their hands dirty and spend the time/effort to maintain one. You can read more on that here, if you want. Onto your suggestion and my only real concern is whether or not it would actually be used. I don't really believe that many people will buy shares in a business and I'm not convinced that many people here actually produce businesses that make any money. There are only a handful of examples that I can come up with of things that people have been prepared to pay for. Notwithstanding the coding element, of which I have no knowledge I would like to see something done to link the business district to actual businesses and if there was an option to purchase a stake in a business that made money, I would probably do so. |
