Wandering the streets of Las Vegas in between crimes, you see bright, twirling spotlights illuminating the sky ahead of you. Curious, you approach and see a gathering crowd of well dressed people. It is a curious mix. Celebrities, sports stars, wealthy business, and even a few men and women rumored to be involved in illegal activities mingle on the sidewalk outside of a newly constructed theater. At the top of the hour, the doors to the theater swing open and you follow the crowd down the red carpeted hallway. As you enter the theater of plush, luxurious seats you see a bluish, sparkling painting of the Las Vegas skyline in the background, and a shining mahogany desk and a leather chair on the stage in the foreground. A fancily dressed man holding a saxophone leads a 10 piece band in a pulsing beat. Smiling, you walk quickly towards an open seat as a silky voiced announcer begins to speak. Come in, come in! Take a seat in the crowd! And let's have a hand for your host- MacLeod! As the bandleader, AdrianChampagne, winds down the song and lowers his saxophone, the crowd begins to clap and cheer. MacLeod, dressed in a striped black suit, strides out onto the stage. The grin on his face is reflected in his green eyes, and he runs a hand through his dark hair, though you notice a few streaks of silver. Arriving at the front of the stage, MacLeod waits for the cheers to subside and begins to speak. Thank you! It's great to have everyone here tonight for the first episode. I've always loved these streets, and trying to bring a higher quality experience to them is a bit of a personal crusade. A crusade- so if I start pillaging and raping, just forward all complaints to the Pope. The drummer in the band hits a few beats as the audience chuckles. Seriously, though, it's a pleasure to have you all here for our first show. Sorry I was a bit late- there were 37 new auths standing out on the sidewalk and I had to talk my way through them. Well I'd like to introduce my bandleader, AdrianChampagne. It took a lot of cash and caviar to lure him out here, but I've never heard anyone make a sax sing like he can, so here he is. Adrian stands and gives an exaggerated bow as the crowd politely applauds. As the band gives a short burst of music, MacLeod settles in behind his polished desk. Now, onto the show. We've got a special guest dropping by later, but first I'd like to get into a few regular segments we'll be exploring. The first, fittingly enough, is called "Review of the Streets". So lets see what's been going on the last week or so. Ladies and Gentlemen, we seem to be living in a copycat society. Let's hope that we don't have any communists show up, or we'll all be going out of business! After weeks with our world lacking a regular newspaper, two new papers hit the doorsteps a scant 3 hours apart from each other. First up, we have Mafia Maxim, published by Raptor of New Orleans. Next, we have The Detroit Times, published by a group of men and women in Detroit. You read either of those, Adrian? Adrian, looking at MacLeod blankly, shrugs and returns to cleaning his saxophone with a toothbrush. Well it doesn't seem to matter much, as both of these papers seem to have vanished. God Rest Their Inky Souls. We can only hope that a regular paper will be revived soon. In more lively news, there seems to be an increase of storytellers making their way out into the streets, of a variety of talents. Though it would certainly be wonderful if everyone was the next Fitzgerald or Hemingway, each of these men should be commended for their efforts regardless of their talents. Incidentally, if anyone would like to join me on a bender with Fitzgerald, just let me know. Maybe some day scientists will discover the correlation between great writing and excessive drinking. Until then, I just plan on enjoying it. We'll be back after a quick commercial break! Adrian and the band stand up as the lights dim and the announcer reads an advertisement. ************************************************************************ Got a business? Want to attract more customers? Contact MacLeod for exciting new advertising possibilities! ************************************************************************ Adrian's saxophone and the other instruments squeal excitedly for a moment, before the lights return and you see MacLeod seated behind his desk. Speaking of the streets, lets check out how some of the most well known people in the business are doing with regards to their public appearances. A giant board titled "The Bold, The Beautiful, and the Shy" drops down from the ceiling, attached by two ropes, as AdrianChampagne leads the band in a rousing number. Your eyes skim over the figures, curious. Now, a word of preface and a couple disclaimers. I only put this information out there because I find it interesting, and the dedicated amongst us should be recognized. But certainly we are all born with different inclinations- not all of us are made to fill the streets with speeches. And it's also true that some people have been around longer than others and had a greater opportunity to do so. And that some prefer more private means of communication. Furthermore, I believe that it is ultimately not the quantity of our words that is important, but rather the quality. Hold on, trying to keep people from getting all bothered is tiring me out. MacLeod reaches for a glass of water as a Adrian leads the band in a brief swooning song. Now with all these things in mind, lets see who has truly endeavored to step out into the public eye Marietta Original: 88 Posts: 684 JimmyTheLionheart Original: 34 Posts: 486 Brick_Pollitt Original: 21 Posts: 324 High_SocWinter_Hill Original: 17 Posts: 272 HydroPhonic Original: 25 Posts: 208 Prozac Original: 19 Posts: 195 ThomasRourke Original: 33 Posts: 203 Death-Knight Original: 14 Posts: 182 The_Messiah Original: 3 Posts: 166 LouisGato Original: 22 Posts: 154 Munchkin Original: 12 Posts: 132 Aftershock Original: 10 Posts: 119 Vicodin Original: 16 Posts: 116 Cruel Original: 4 Posts: 101 FridgeRevenge Original: 7 Posts: 76 Nicky Original: 9 Posts: 75 Hypno Original: 9 Posts: 70 Premier Original: 7 Posts: 64 Akasha Original: 11 Posts: 76 -Rusko- Original: 7 Posts: 62 Phantom_Ghost Original: 10 Posts: 50 SalvatoreGato Original: 6 Posts: 40 Luxuria Original: 4 Posts: 31 TM-Scarface Original: 9 Posts: 25 Persian Original: 5 Posts: 25 Shagtastic Original: 4 Posts: 18 Certainly interesting! But lets take a quick commercial break before we move on to our next segment. ************************************************************************ Booze! Books! Booze Booze Books Books! In the mood for a good read? A good brew? You know you can't appreciate the fine work of bestsellers like Fitzgerald and Hemingway unless you're in the same state they were in when they wrote it! So come on down to MacLeod's Books and Beers in Las Vegas! ************************************************************************ Welcome back. Ladies and Gentlemen, we're honored tonight to have our very special first guest... Godmother Marietta Rossi! As Adrian leads the band in a sweeping, grand entrance Marietta walks out from backstage. She is stylishly dressed in a slimming black pencil skirt and a pink blouse and she warmly smiles at MacLeod as he walks over to her and shakes her hand. Leading her back to his desk and the leather chair adjacent to it they face each other as they look out towards the audience. Clearing his throat, MacLeod begins to speak. <macleod> Welcome, Godmother Marietta. Thanks so much for being here on opening night for the show, especially considering recent events. I understand that one of our mutual acquaintances, Paradox, passed on recently. Please pass on my condolences to everyone back in Detroit. But we certainly are lucky that after taking care of your business, you were still able to make it here. <marietta> Well thank you for allowing me to be here, and even more thanks for your condolences. Such is the way of our life though, unfortunately. * Marietta shrugs meekly <macleod> Certainly is. And what is this "allowing" you to be here business? Thank YOU for allowing me to appear on my show. * MacLeod jokes as the crowd lightens up from the initially somber mood * Marietta laughs along politely <macleod> Well there's a little game I'd like to try out... <marietta> Oh boy. <macleod> No no, not that sort of game. Last time I played that sort I wound up running around Detroit at 3 AM wearing RourkeyRourke's hankerchief and a shitfaced grin. <macleod> Not exactly easy to explain to the kind officer who tried to assist me. * Marietta giggles <macleod> Anyways, the game is called Seven Questions in Heaven. <marietta> Oh my! <macleod> Keep things nice and organized. And no, no one will be going into the closet with anyone else. And yes, it is bigger than a breadbox. * Marietta glances towards the audience with a raised eyebrow. * MacLeod pauses and chuckles as Adrian plays a staccato series of notes before shouting "SEVEN IN HEAVEN!" <macleod> Well alright then, Marietta. Ready to begin? <marietta> As ready as I'll ever be I suppose! <macleod> Don't worry- we've got a nice easy one for you to start out with. <macleod> Alright, Question 1. Earlier in the show, as you might have seen, we took a look at the public presence of some of the bolder people in the seven cities. How important do you personally consider public presence when you're looking at a leader or a potential leader? Is it essential? Necessary? <marietta> Well, I personally, as you can tell, am a big fan of public appearances. It's almost a disease with me. *Marietta chuckles a bit.* As far as "street presence" goes, I guess that's what the kids these days are calling it, I find that it *is* important. <marietta> If you want to start your own crew, people need to know who you are. <marietta> I don't make it a requirement with my captains that they be overly verbose. <marietta> Not like me, a publicity whore. <marietta> But if you are looking to have your own crew, a bit of it is necessary. People won't join you or respect you if they've never seen you before. * Marietta smiles politely. <macleod> Absolutely. And nobody says anything bad about publicity whores around these parts. I'm a sensitive soul, after all! <marietta> Oh is that right? * Marietta laughs and shakes her head. <macleod> See? That shaking of the head there... hits me right here. *MacLeod dramatically holds on to his heart <macleod> Anyways, I'll not let you distract me. On to Question 2. <macleod> You've been around these streets for a long time, ma'm. Not that you look a day over 25. * MacLeod tugs nervously at his tie in an exaggerated gesture <marietta> Why thank you! <macleod> But as you worked your way up through the ranks <macleod> Was there anyone you tried to model yourself after? And who do you think has been particularly exemplary during your time as a leader that you would want young mafiosos looking to as an example? Present company excluded, of course. <marietta> Hahahaha, well of course you would top my list, MacLeod, there's no denying that! <macleod> Flattery will get you everywhere * MacLeod jokes, as the audience chuckles <marietta> As far as role models go, I did have the opportunity to work for the late Iris, Don of Philly, once upon a time. She did five me a chance to start the Riot! which has turned into an empire as you have seen. For that I have always looked up to her and admired her. <marietta> Currently I look to the other Godfathers as examples of people to aspire to become. Thomas and Jimmy are both men who are striving to give new bloodlines chances every day. That in itself is amazing. <marietta> Plus, I can't forget, my lovely Right Hand Aurora, who has the patience of a Saint. <marietta> Without patience you often end up, well, dead. * Marietta giggles. <macleod> Truly, although the rate she's been producing Rourkes isn't exactly saintlike! <marietta> She loves babies, what can I say? <macleod> She's not the only one, according to Mr. Lionheart * MacLeod coughs <macleod> But I digress. <macleod> Ready for Question 3? * Marietta takes a deep breath. <marietta> I surely hope so! <macleod> Now, it's the nature of our business that sometimes situations cannot be resolved diplomatically. What's the toughest "hostile takeover" you ever had to participate in and why? <marietta> Ohhhhh boy... you're really asking me to search my memory here, I hope you know. * Marietta pulls a face and glances towards the audience momentarily. <marietta> I would have to say the "hostile takeover" that was hardest for me, but in the end was the most adventageous, was the 'Dons of the Dead' war, as I affectionately call it. <marietta> It wasn't a hostile take over on my part, nor Detroit's, but it was the failed plans of several other Dons who were attempting to monopolize the business throughout the entire country, if you can believe it. <macleod> Shocking. <marietta> I believe six Dons entered that war, only one was left standing. <marietta> ...Me. * Marietta makes another face. <macleod> Personally, I always try to be the top hat. Even then, I tend to stay away from monopolies. Messy businesses, those. <marietta> Oh, agreed. Back then, I was severely outnumbered and severely under skilled. I couldn't hit the broad side of the bar with my gun at that time. While it was tough, however, I managed to pull my family and city through, and here we are today! <macleod> Hard to imagine a time when you were outnumbered, and impossible to imagine a time when you were underskilled. <marietta> It happened. I used to be called "Hop Along" <macleod> You know, I do recall that. <macleod> Hard to believe now, isn't it? * Marietta laughs. <macleod> Moving on to Question 4. <macleod> If you had to be stuck in an elevator with one person for 8 hours who would it be? Again, present company excluded, of course. Adrian and I wouldn't want to make everyone else jealous. <marietta> Ahaha... oh boy. You really do like to make me think, don't you? <marietta> I suppose the only person I can honestly say I wouldn't get tired of being in an elevator with would be Aurora. <marietta> But that's no fun, is that? <marietta> Lets go with a bottle of scotch. It wouldn't annoy me and it's delicious. <macleod> Can I amend this answer to put you, Aurora, and the bottle of scotch in the elevator for 8 hours? <marietta> Yes you may * MacLeod jokingly jots down a note <macleod> Well that's an idea certainly more than enough to entertain the gentlemen in audience <macleod> In fact, I think we'd better move on before a few of them get distracted. <macleod> Question 5. <macleod> Being in the position that you're in, I imagine you've got a great many people coming to you for guidance about all manner of things. Is it difficult to have to help so many people, and how does it affect your own personal life goals? <marietta> "Keep your eye on the prize", that's what my Mother always said. While it's hard at times that I'm often kept in the public eye, or that there are constant stream of people who want to speak to me... <marietta> It really doesn't effect my own goals. I'm pretty good with time management. <marietta> And if there is something pressing that I need to do personally, many people are usually gracious enough to speak to me when I have more time. <marietta> I suppose it all comes down to respect: if I respect people to come to their aide, they will respect my 'personal' time or my own 'business matters'. <macleod> Makes a lot of sense. I just try to bother you with the important stuff, personally. * MacLeod winks at Marietta and looks down at his sheet of questions <macleod> Alright, two left to go. <macleod> Question 6. <macleod> What is the more impressive accomplishment to you and why? 200 notches on the "hunting" gun, 1000 appearances in the streets, or leading an organization for a full year? <marietta> I would go with one hundred gabillion appearances in the streets. <marietta> Killing is not something that should be bragged about. <marietta> Ever. <marietta> It is immoral to begin with and crude that we even have to resort to bloodshed at times. <marietta> Leading a family for a year... that sounds amazing. <marietta> Hard to achieve, yes. <marietta> But someone, much better than myself mind you, once said it's not the length of your tenure, but the legacy you leave behind. <marietta> Which is why I love speaking. When I am long gone, I hope that my words are remembered for generations to come. <macleod> An answer after my own heart. <marietta> That's what I'm trying to do here. <marietta> Am I that transparent? <macleod> Personally, though, I plan on using a team of construction workers to chisel my words into the streets of Las Vegas. <macleod> That way I'll know for a fact they'll be here when I'm gone <macleod> and no one can do anything about it. <marietta> Hahahaha, very nice! <macleod> Alright, well you're nearly out of the woods, ma'm. <macleod> One more question for you. <macleod> Question 7. <macleod> Since you've become Godfather of Detroit, we've seen you move many of your Detroit auths to new cities. Is it difficult to take in new men and women, see them flourish in your operation and then see them leave? I'm sure there's a temptation to keep your best people close to you rather than sending out on their own. <marietta> It is always most difficult to watch men and women you've known since their young adult years "leave the nest" so to say. <marietta> You take them in as thugs, do your best to raise them right, help them achieve all their dreams and hit new heights.... and then you let them go. <marietta> I'm not going to lie, I do feel a bit of a "mother's anguish" when I let them move across the country. <marietta> But if I am letting them go, then it is because I know that they are the perfect person to fill the job. <marietta> Sometimes you have to let go the people closest to you. It's a fact of life. You cannot stifle your associates. So with that sadness comes pride, and in the end that pride is what makes all of it worth it. <macleod> Certainly a difficult aspect of the business. <marietta> Difficult but not impossible. <macleod> Word on the street is that nothing's impossible for Marietta, actually. <marietta> I wouldn't say that! I'm only human. <macleod> Well, you did at least manage to survive Seven Questions in Heaven! *MacLeod motions to Adrian as he leads the band in a few triumphant notes. <marietta> Hahaha, wasn't so bad I suppose! <macleod> Of course not! <macleod> Well here we are. End of the interview. But you do get a chance to turn the tables and ask me a single question, if you'd like. <marietta> Oh ho ho! Now I've got to give this some thought... * Marietta looks out at the audience where a few people beging to call out suggestions. Waving her hand to quiet them down she turns back to MacLeod with a smile. * MacLeod smiles and leans back in his chair <marietta> I suppose I would like to ask you, Sir... <marietta> Are you available for dinner after the show wraps? * MacLeod smirks as a few whistles and catcalls emerge from the audience. <macleod> Absolutely, Marietta. What were you thinking? <marietta> I know a little place around the corner. Lovely Italian place. <macleod> I've heard a lot about That Place That Sells Italian. Sounds good to me. <marietta> Wonderful! <macleod> Although, I do need to stick around for a bit to finish off this little show I've got going on. <macleod> Our closing segment, coming up, will have my Roast of the Week/Toast of the Week awards. <macleod> But hey, feel free to wait backstage. Or grab a flute and join Adrian in the band. Hell, whatever you want. <macleod> We'll be right back! * MacLeod leans in and chats to Marietta as the next commercial comes on ************************************************************************ The Holy Glove Co., officially sanctioned by all major religions! Stock market crash got you down in the dumps? Evicted from your home? Unemployed? Wandering the streets? Well you DIIIIIVINE INTERVENTION in your DIGIT EXTENSIONS. Here we are, the close of the show. I'll be ending this night as I will each show, with the Toast of the Week. Now I do have two of them to hand out. My first toast of the week goes out to Scipita for putting together the trivia competition being held on April 4th (see her discussion in the streets for details). An interesting, creative, and unique idea. Well done, ma'm. The second toast of the week goes out to TheGhostWithin . After his father was killed, TheGhostWithin came out to the streets and briefly addressed the issue, asking potentially rash members of his father's operation to not take matters into their own hands. This young man might possibly have saved our cities from unnecessary bloodshed but regardless, his actions are to be commended. He certainly has managed to inherit a selection of good qualities from his father. Well done, sir. Well that's our show! Hope to see you here next time, if we don't get cancelled before then! Goodnight everybody! As AdrianChampagne leads the band in a closing number, MacLeod waves and heads offstage. Although you'd been sitting for a while, you rise quickly to your feet with the other audience members and applaud. </macleod></macleod></macleod></macleod></marietta></macleod></marietta></macleod></marietta></marietta></marietta></macleod></macleod></marietta></macleod></marietta></macleod></marietta></macleod></marietta></marietta></marietta></marietta></marietta></macleod></macleod></macleod></macleod></marietta></macleod></macleod></macleod></marietta></marietta></macleod></marietta></marietta></marietta></marietta></marietta></marietta></marietta></marietta></macleod></macleod></macleod></macleod></marietta></marietta></marietta></marietta></macleod></macleod></macleod></macleod></marietta></macleod></marietta></marietta></marietta></marietta></macleod></macleod></macleod></macleod></marietta></macleod></marietta></macleod></marietta></marietta></macleod></marietta></marietta></marietta></macleod></marietta></macleod></macleod></macleod></marietta></macleod></marietta></marietta></marietta></marietta></macleod></marietta></macleod></macleod></marietta></macleod></macleod></macleod></marietta></macleod></marietta></marietta></marietta></marietta></marietta></macleod></macleod></marietta></macleod></macleod></marietta></macleod></macleod></macleod></marietta></macleod></macleod></marietta></macleod> |

Shirley applauded along with the other members of the audience. She turned to the gentleman standing to her left, raising her voice slightly to be heard over the roar. That was quite enjoyable! She smiled, not dismayed by the fact that she was being ignored. I really liked the interview with Godmother Marietta. And thank goodness for all of those breaks in the speech. They nearly talked my ears off. She continued to clap until the crowd began to dissipate, then collected her hand bag and followed the crowd out of the theater and out into the Las Vegas night. |

| Marietta watched the show on her television later that week, pleased at how well the interview between herself and her old friend MacLeod had gone. Smiling to herself she switched off the television set as she stood up, recalling the dinner that had happened afterward. | |
