I was sitting in my office, it was already late. Shirley and myself enjoyed a last good night drink. We had a great whiskey, but that's another story. Whilst we sipped on our glasses and talking about this and that it suddenly knocked on my door, before I was able to answer a young man stood in my office. "Hello, sir. I want to join the family, I'll be loyal and protect the family." I was glad I didn't spit out the good whiskey in shock. At least that kid had balls, that was the only good thing I could see about him and if that was a good thing, not sure about that. Well, I looked over to Shirley, she was wel confused about that behaviour but we both know he might be new to this lifestyle. I was leaning forward in my chair, put my arms on the desk and looked at the kid. "Is there anything else you can offer me, son? See, my house is full with loyal members who protect the family. Also I just need to go outside and ask around, I bet all would promise me the same. I don't want just anybodies, I want criminals worth to become a part of my family one day. So tell me, son. Is there anything else you can offer me?" It seemed like the kid was thinking hard, one minute, two minutes, three minutes...nothing. Maybe he's a dumbass...maybe just slow. Four minutes, five minutes. Suddenly the kid moved...he walked out, closed the door and was gone. Fine by me, maybe he needed the time to think about that, slow doesn't mean he's useless. I looked over to Shirley again, the confusion seemed to be stronger than before...understandable. The next day. I woke up pretty early and after I had my breakfast and my coffee I called Shirley to pick me up. I waited downstairs and looked around the street. A few minutes later I saw a young man who looked like someone I saw before. Indeed, it was the young man who jumped into my office. He weared a badge with a family name on it. I was shocked, that guy left me alone after he asked for a spot and went to someone else? ---------------------------------------------------------------- "Fellow mafiosi, this accident happened not too long ago and it wasn't the only one last week. Both men who made the mistake asking for a spot in my family and then went to another family or the other way around are dead now. This is one of the most, if not the most disrespecting bahaviour you can show. It's a slap in the face of the head of a family. I hope this is a lesson for all thugs who think they can do what they want because they just can't. If you ask someone to join his family you'll stick to that one request, if the leader asks you some questions you will answer them. You DO NOT ignore them. If you thugs try that and I get a hold of that I will get you killed because that's what you deserve for that! I hope all current leaders will deal with it that way aswell as they need to learn that they can't do whatever they want!" |

| Great point Sal. These fools have no respect. Most of the people who mail me looking for work show some respect or I don't acknowledge them at all. | |

Hears the situation from a distance. He begins to think about what he would do in this situation and gives his opinion... "I have had this happen to me only once while trying to recruit for Don Pollitt. I will not name names but this person is still around. He came to me to talk about working for the family. He was only a small time Thug at the time. He approached me with one thing on mind, to get into a family." "After a few words to each other, he entered the family coffee shop. He entered and only muttered "hello". No one responded as we were all working on a drug deal or some kind of work. So the kid left. I ran into him again and asked him to come back in, he did willing knowing that we were working. After about 20 minutes of getting to know the guy, he left. I found him again later and was showing off another family tag." "I was utterly disgusted. I introduced the kid to the Boss of the family while the Boss was in the coffee shop. The disrespect he showed to me was unmistakable. Should this happen to me again, I will show no mercy for such disrespect to myself and to ultimately, my Boss." Nods in agreement with Mr. Gato. "I hope they do too Mr. Gato." |

All too well I've seen young ones break down and collapse during an interview, only to resurface with another sponsor later on down the road. To be fair, though, I'm glad they joined someone else; at least I get to see their true colors. If they can't survive a simple interview, well, hell - I don't want you here. |

| An important topic, Mr. Gato, and one that you've eloquently laid out. I hope all new members to our way of life find this discussion and heed your advice. Well done. | |

It happens far too often, and its quite despicable. Some of these kids fresh off the boat go ahead and line up several interviews simultaneously, picking and choosing their allegiances. In a way, we do pick our allegiances in this thing of ours, but in my opinion it should be done before the big contact is made. Its a huge mark of disrespect and in this world, it paints a huge target. We may not live by the letter of the law, but we do live by a code of respect. I wonder if the leaders these recruits eventually fall in with KNEW of their new member's prior actions, if they would be so welcoming? |

| As a retired family-head - I had done my share of recruting. Picking up the fresh zips off the docks. It would be disappointing to see young prospects who had displayed interest and saw allegience run off and join other organizations, but I'm a merciful client and I offer clemency for such slates. My hope is that these young'ins will become aware of the error in their ways and the potential harm they open up to themselves. | |

Jim quaffs one last expresso and gently dabs his lips with his silk hankerchief. He glances briefly at his shoes and admires his dapper profile in the high shine of his carefully polished guccis. Straightening the lapels of his Yves St. Laurent he gives Sal a cockeyed grin, almost a sneer in fact; but not with any intent of disrespect Sal, Sal, Sal...you speak of matters of respect you know that you're preaching to the choir here son. Alas many on these streets know not of what we speak. The concepts are quite alien to them. Sadly most are truely blissfully unaware of their ignorance. They think that they understand respect; but the subtle nuances and true substance of the subject are lost on them. If we truly desire a recrudescence of the ways of Omerta your, admittedly unsubtle approach is, without doubt, the most likely means of attainment of same. What say you friend? |

| At the end of the day, it is to the misfortune of the new sponsor that this "loyal" individual has joined their family, not so long after requesting an invite from yourself. You may be frustrated, you may be annoyed, but you have actually had a stroke of fortune in the fact that you have not acquired a someone who lies about being loyal before they've even joined the family. | |
