Ok.. So with all the recent drop in prices I'm starting to think which next gen console I should finally purchase.

I'm looking for some insight from users of each to tell me what makes that model good. I dont want a fight between fanboys of each to say why one is better than the other etc, just generally what makes the one you own good.

trying to consider things like games available, online experience, game price, graphics etc

If you already have a good gaming computer I would say PS4, I have neither but I would like to get the PS4. I like the PS+ or whatever it is that you can subscribe to and get "free" games while you pay for that subscription. I say "free" because once you cancel your subscription you lose access to the games. I think I read something about Microsoft doing something like this though last year around the time they first released these consoles. Not a big console gamer so I'm not sure if that was true as my memory is not that great. If you don't have a good PC I would say get one of those first. You can get the majority of the games on either console (Microsoft/Sony) for PC, and if you have the hardware you can run them in a much better quality that either console can. Since you didn't as about computers I wont say any more advantages to those over consoles :P

Got a decent PC but its kept in the bedroom and normally play the console when the mrs is sleeping. Have xbox 360 but looking to finally upgrade to a newer console and really torn on which is better tbh.

Ah, ya gotta do what I do and make yourself a decent game/man cave :P I have a 360 as well, haven't had a Sony console since the PS2 and a really after that I got out of gaming for quite some time. My 360 hasn't been turned on in over a year now. For whatever reason I also like the Sony achievement system more so than Microsoft's not really sure why but I do. My decision would also be based on the fact that I have a Vita so PS+ would be even better with a PS4. 

I have both, so hopefully this insight will help you out some.

There's actually not that much of a difference between them in the current gen. You have to pay to get online for both, they're both good online, games are around the same prices, both have exclusives for their own consoles etc etc.

Design-wise, I think the PS4 looks nicer. The XBox One looks like a black box essentially, whereas the PS4 is slimmer and not completely square.

I could go into the details on the how and why of my next point, but I don't wanna bore you with all the technical details - the PS4 is better than the Xbox One in terms of graphics. It's not a huge difference (you wouldn't really notice it unless playing the two consoles side by side with the same game).

In terms of controllers - PS4 has a built in battery that you charge with a USB cable. Xbox one doesn't come with that, you have to use batteries or buy a quick charge kit or similar otherwise you'll spend a fortune on batteries.

Xbox is generally better for multimedia stuff (films, music, as well as games) whereas the PS4 focuses almost entirely on gaming although you can do the multimedia stuff too, there are just less options.

I mean really it still just comes down to personal preference, I wouldn't say you'd have made a bad choice no matter which you pick. Take a look at console exclusives and at what console your friends own too, as for me part of the fun of gaming is being able to do it alongside friends.

No you can't. Both the PS4 and Xbox One do not allow you to play older games on them!

Yes MetalHead is quite wrong in his statement. The only thing the Xbox has over the PS4 when it comes to hardware is a slightly faster 10% or so CPU and if you know anything about gaming you will be more focused on the GPU which PS4 and that is about 25-30% faster. Then we get to the memory where Xbox uses DDR3 memory (8GB) whereas the PS4 is using a much faster GDDR5 memory standard which also has 8GB but developers only get to use 4.5GB of that memory as the rest is allocated to running the OS, they do however have another 1GB of "flexible" memory when it is available for use. Xbox has 5GB of memory free for developers to use. If you play a graphics intensive game side by side on both consoles you will see the PS4 will look better each and every time and run smoother as the GPU is faster. The big issue with most consoles is the FPS cap that most use that you will nearly never find on any PC version.

So am I understand correct that XBOX would be better for all round multimedia use, as in a dedicated entertainment system, rather than just gaming alone? I need to start from scratch with building my entertainment area, and would prefer for now to just grab either a PS4 or XBOX that can be used as an all-rounder, instead of dedicated solely to gaming although that will obviously also be what I'll use it for. I figure either way both will do the job, yet I liked the PS3 over the XBOX 360 for multimedia use, and have had both, yet still have the PS3 (fuckn ring of death shit).
