The Long and Winding Road Started by: MacLeod on Apr 12, '09 20:34
MacLeod stood on the balcony of his penthouse, staring down at the sprawling Las Vegas strip below. The full moon and the stars shone above as his eyes glanced towards the heavens, but the light from the casinos, hotels, and bars did much to dim their appearance. Well, he'd had a lot of time out in the wilderness with the stars- now it was time for action of a different sort. Turning back towards his room through the sliding glass door MacLeod grabbed his jacket from the edge of the couch and shrugged it on. He adjusted his tie in the mirror and was surprised to notice another streak of gray in his otherwise black hair. After splashing some cold water on his face and drying himself, he exited through the doorway and rode the elevator slowly down to the ground floor. He had quite the important appointment to keep.

The elevator doors slid open and MacLeod quickly stepped out. Catching sight of AdrianChampagne eating some caviar in the window of the restaurant next door, he winked and waited for the young man to follow him. Making his way down the Vegas sidewalk he thought about the long path that had brought him to this point. The money he'd made. The friends he'd helped bury. The late nights. The early mornings. But he'd arrived.

As he reached Hypno, who was waiting out in the streets, MacLeod couldn't help but smile as he shook his hand. Seeing Benjamin_Button standing next to him, MacLeod gave him a firm handshake and a wink as well, before stepping up to address the small crowd that had gathered. With AdrianChampagne standing at his side, MacLeod began to speak.

Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. I'd like to begin by thanking Godfather Hypno for the opportunity to lead my own organization. I've known Hypno for most of my life, back when he was serving as RHM for MickeyRourke and I was first getting into the business. He has bestowed a great honor on me today, and it is not one that I take lightly.

MacLeod pauses for a moment and looks out into the crowd, briefly making eye contact with almost everyone before clearing his throat and beginning his speech.

I think there's a somewhat understandable tendency in our line of work to view getting authed as a sort of finish line. That, once you've achieved it, the only goal is to prolong your time here on Earth. And I think we spend most of our lives trying to forget the fact that we're going to die. Well let me tell you- I know I will die. I've accepted it. My only goal is to, in the time that I do have, work to achieve as much as I can for the benefit of our shared business- and myself as well. So that someday, when a group of you gather at my funeral you will be able to look back at my life with pride and respect. When I do die, I hope to be able to reflect on my time here and see a life that was truly lived. And not just prolonged. I humbly stand before you today not at the summit of my life, but rather the beginning of what I hope to be a great climb.

But enough of that- this is not time for rhetoric alone, but for actions. I hope to accomplish at least five specific concrete goals in the coming weeks, and it is my pleasure to share them with you today. First, I hope to maintain and build a close knit crew of dedicated, loyal, and intelligent men and women. Second, I hope to create a regular, reliable, expansive network of sports betting, which I will be shortly opening in the fine city of Las Vegas. Third, I hope to tangibly help improve the singular importance of one's promotion to the rank of Made Man, as well as other higher ranks. Fourth, I plan on asking my crew to increase the excellence of our streets and businesses, so as to remind people of the heart of our life. And lastly... well, this last one I may have to keep vague for just a little while longer. But suffice it to say that I see many, many newcomers to this thing of ours acting in ways that are totally unacceptable, and after thinking long and hard of ways to improve on this, I believe I've found a partial solution that has not yet been attempted.

In conclusion, I would like to introduce the name of my operation. Our family has operated under the "Relentless" name for some time now- originally under MickeyRourke, and then later as Hypno took the reins from his fallen friend. Because I will be running my own operation, both Godfather Hypno and Benjamin_Button have expressed their desire for me to choose a new name. And so it is with a heavy heart and wistful look back that I lay down the "Relentless" tag.

Though money is made and lives are ended through our actions, it is our words that lie at the core of our world. When we have passed our words will endure forever. Tombstones of letters, stories, and perhaps even poems. They will echo in the far corners of our world for generations. Now, no one in our line of work is forced to be vocal- there are certainly more than a few good men and women who I've met that do wonderful work, but prefer not to speak in public. However, at the end of the day it is our words that remain and our words, as well as our actions, that bind us together. I have always done my best to be as active as I possibly can in our streets and bars, and the name of my crew will reflect this. It is a name that reflects both a love of these words that encapsulate our experience and the high value that I place on intelligence. My family line has never been put in this situation before, and I intend to make the most of it. And so it is with great excitement at the future to come that I present THE LITERATI

As a young mafioso steps forward and yells "Congratz!" MacLeod glares at him until he sits down.

And I would hope and expect that you all refrain from making single word replies to any discussion out here in the streets. I would, of course, welcome any comments or questions, but as my organization will not be making one word speeches I would appreciate the same courtesy at this time.

Adrian waits for his new boss to finish up his speech, and starts clapping.

Congrats!

Adrian starts walking away, stifling a laugh. He turns around to see the look on MacLeod's face, and lets out a laugh.

Just kiddin' bossman!

Adrian winks at MacLeod, and turns to face the growing audience.

God this feels good...ever since I was a child I've thrived on being in the spotlight...or at least in somebody elses. Anyway, to business. First I would like to thank MacLeod for giving me the chance to be his Right-hand. My bloodline has only been CL once, and never Right or Left-hand. This is a proud moment for me, and I pledge to you Mac, and to the fine people of this community to do the best job that I can, with the responsibility I have been given.

Adrian loosens his tie a bit, and and walks around, allowing each member of the audience to hear him adequately.

If any of you have any problems at all, and the bossman isn't around, seek me out and I'll help you as best I can. If you have any business proposals, feel free to seek me out. Hell, if you're just looking to strike up a good conversation, you find me and we'll have drinks on me. I don't want to take up to much of your time, as this isn't my moment, its MacLeod's but I just wanted to briefly introduce myself to you, the fine people of this community, and the fine people of the city of Las Vegas, in case you ever need me for anything.

The name's Adrian, Adrian Champagne, but you can just call me "The Champ".

Adrian winks at the crowd and takes his place back to the right of MacLeod, and awaits any questions that people may have.

Adrian listens attentively. He is glad to be attending such an elegant venue since this is the first time in his life that he sees the rise of a God Father and its consequences. He claps hard after each speech wishing all the people in Las Vegas a prosperous future.

I don't normally drop by many auth speeches as I find the generic congratulatory remarks quite trivial, to be honest, however your Right Hand is a man I respect deeply and having chosen such a man to be by your side, and having heard many good things about you, I am very pleased to see your tenure as a leader begin. Congratulations, sir, and good luck.

Glad to see you share a little about your goals, MacLeod. I have no doubt that you are the right man for this new adventure. A wise man with a firm grasp on things and a wisdom only nurtured over time, but looks can be a little deceiving.

To your hands, best of luck with this one!

Congratulations.

Shirley smiled, thinking of all the times she and MacLeod had shared back in Detroit. He had been something of a mentor to her when she had first moved to the city, and now he was in Las Vegas, continuing to demand the best of people. Some things never change, she thought, and it made her happy.

My dearest friend, MacLeod, you are more than deserving of your new role. Your unwillingness to accept mediocrity is a testament to your character, and you have certainly been an asset to the crime families of both Detroit and Las Vegas already. You have an ambitious to-do list, but if I know anything about you, you... well, you've never heard of paraphrasing, but you've also got a solid work ethic. I seriously look forward to seeing the product of your tenure.

Congratulations to you and the very best of luck.

You have worked hard for your position, and I applaud you for your dedication to your family and your ethics.

Mac, my old friend, how dare you ever doubt me again. How many times did I tell you your time was coming?! And here it is! I'm so very proud of you and all your accomplishments. Take this opportunity by the reigns and make the most of it.

I know you will do extremely well, and that you will prove to be a major asset for the city of Las Vegas.

Love you, brother. Congrats!
