To kinsfolk and those from foreign lands alike! ALthough it seems folly in such a miserable climate to be celebrating, I feel it is thoroughly needed. Despite being born to a country with a football team who are perennial Quarter Finalists in every tournament, if they even qualify; to a country who's rugby union players only make up 8 men in 36 man British & Irish Lions squad. Despite being born to a country who through failure of it's own government is facing one of the worst economic crises ever known. A country who's involvement in recent conflicts (afghanistan aside) makes me sick. A country where the tories take care of the rich, the labour take care of no one, and the lib dems are just shit. A country that would rather host the Olympics than tackle the sickening inner city poverty that exists behind a ridiculous facade. A country so riddled with bullshit ridiculous PC that this day itself is scarcily celebrated for fear of being branded racist. Despite all of that, I am proud to be English. Proud of a nation with healthcare, however poor we make it out to be, that we do not have to pay for. A country that with almost total lack of Governmental support excelled in the 2008 Olympics. A country of democracy, as much as we complain about inequality - we are allowed to speak about it, a privelege not offered to everyone; I could go on! Today, I put all the faults and shortcomings of my country aside and show my immense pride and appreciation at being born to a nation with such a rich cultural tapestry, something I should really do every day. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to the pub - where I shall put Land of Hope and Glory, God Save the Queen, and Jerusalem on repeat on the jukebox, whilst sipping the Queen's finest English bitter. Cry 'God for Harry, England, and Saint George!' |
