| Death sentence or not? | Started by: SkullCandy- on Apr 23, '09 15:43 |

everyone, Im SkullCandy-... Just randomly, i heard (what i think was) a pretty good debate today IRL.. It was... Should people be sentenced to death if they commit a serious enough crime... like in the older times, people were hung and Electricuted using the electric chair... I know its pretty sick, but this is what i heard also.. Say a 5 year old girl was really brutally murdered, She was decapitated, every limb amputated, then she was set a light and left to burn... what should the man or womans sentence be if they were found guilty, Should he or she sentenced to death? If not what should their sentence be...? If they were to be sentenced to death, should it be humain or barbaric...? How should they die if they did this to a little girl... Should they be shot, Electricuted, Hung, Gassed, or should they have the same done back to them?.. Tell me wether you are for or against death sentences and why.. Me i think, if they did something like that.. Death straight away.. no two ways about it... but just say the man or woman that did it, had a nother person with them of the same age, (thats 19 by the way) But had the mental age of a 7 year old... what should his sentence be? Should he be lett off easy or easier that the guy or girl that didn't have any mental disability.. Yes or no...? and say why... why have you chosen what you did... Thanks for reading.. and i look forward to reading your replies... |

People are still "Executed" in the united states. Last one was in 2007 that I remember. Actually Texas is a bad state and execute's alot of people. Like I said, I dont know about recently, I dont keep up with the news much, but I know they used to. I say no to your question. I dont think people should be sentenced to death. Maybe life in prison till death, or life in maximum security prison if the crime was worse, but not death. LIfe in jail I believe to be worse than death, if its done right. I dont think they should have all the shit that they do get in jail, yes they should have rights, but not "goodies". Like tv's, and other shit they get. I never hear of people that got out of 22 to 23 hours lock up a day, max sec., and go back to jail. I mean, they would have life anyways, but still. I think jail in a whole should be solitary confinement. See how many people like jail, yes there are people who actually do, or see how many go back. The time should fit the crime, but there should never be death. Id like to think someone else would give a better punishment than that later on. Meh, just my opinion. |

Okay, I only read a bit of Ceelo and saw that he said Maybe prison until death. That is a much worse crime then being killed, at least in my opinion. Rotting inside a small cell knowing that you're never going to see sunlight again... doesn't that sound a bit much? I'd much rather get injection or electric chair than to sit by and wait for my time to die. With that said. Meh. If the crime is enough then I really don't mind taking a life for a life. Sounds a bit poetic actually. Only part that is wrong with this is at times someone who had done nothing will be deemed guilty and killed. |

The big problem with the death penalty is that there is no going back once the deed is done. That's all fine and dandy, but what if later evidence turns up and the guy is innocent? With the advent of DNA evidence, old case files were opened and many convicted criminals were exonerated. Research in Illinois found up to 33% of those convicted of capital offenses were later exonerated by DNA evidence. That's a scary statistic. Our criminal justice system is based on the theory that it is better to let 100 guilty men go free than to imprison one innocent person. If they are given the death sentence, there is no reprieve if they are later found to be innocent. Until our justice system is perfect, we should not risk putting innocent people to death in a just society. |

well yes there is that too Butt_Ox but would you be willing to take the risk of leaving a derranged murderer out on the streets... and Ceelo being sentenced ot death is cheaper than putting them in a cell for life.. me personally, i think that life should mean life.. if someone kills, they die |

There are far too many cases of innocent men and women spending time behind bars due to mistakes within the judicial process. These people can eventually be released however. As previously mentioned, the death penalty is more finite than this. Wronlgy convicted & hanged by the neck until death? Sorry but you are still dead. This has been touched on previously and I won't bang on about it. I do find the monetary argument put forward a bit worrying though. I am aware that the cost of incarcerating an offender is obscene but this is a neccessary evil associated with keeping said individuals off the street. Until such times as we have found away to punish and rehabilitate on the cheap, this will be always be the case. Is saving a few dollars really worth taking the lives of innocent people every now and again though? I am a tax payer and I would rather see my contributions spent keeping scum jailed for their whole lives if it negates the possibility of executing even one wrongfully accused person. |

Skullcandy, are you just making up facts? Being sentenced to life in prison is actually cheaper than being put to death. I know, it seems counter-intuitive, but it is correct. The costs that are associated with it are outrageous. This is a pretty widely known fact. I'm disappointed you would throw it out there without doing some fact-checking first. You say if someone kills, they die. Fine. The problem we have been discussing, is how do you know for sure that they killed? Our justice system is not perfect. There are many innocent people behind bars right now. All of this has been discussed already, and it seems you did not even consider it. What if your father were arrested and charged with murder, and there was a very real possibility that he was innocent? Would you want him put to death? Twelve people on a jury decide a man's fate. Should they have the power of God to decide what is fact and what is false, and take someone's life away based on their decisions? Someone who might have children, a spouse, and friends? What about a wife who has been brutally beaten by her husband for twenty years, and one day she snaps and kills him in his sleep? Should she be executed, too? As far as taking the risk of leaving a deranged murderer on the streets....what are you talking about? The alternative we are discussing here is life in prison, not setting free someone who is found guilty. Or are you suggesting that we start rounding people up without having solid evidence against them? Should we start executing everyone who we suspect of crimes? That would certainly alleviate the risk. How about the risk of killing an innocent man in a free society? Fear is one of the biggest problems in society today. It manifests racism and hatred of other cultures, as well as disdain for the poor and anyone who is different. Fear of the bogeyman being around every corner is plastered across the Evening News every night. Fear makes people do dumb things, like put duct tape around all their windows, shoot their children in the middle of the night when they think they hear a prowler, invade third world countries, and execute people who may be innocent. I suppose we could just start accusing them of being witches and burning them at the stake. |

| I is real simple....... If your found guilty of mutilating and murdering a child OBVIOUSLY YOU WERE INVOLVED AND YOU WERE IN THE AREA AT THE TIME AND SUGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF EVIDENCE TO PROVE THAT. So in this case it is simple burry the man. he took a life that will never come back why should he have the privilage to keep his. and not only that why would you alow a chance of some one so malitious escape and do it again. if A dog bites a man in the troat and kills him we put him down SAME WITH US. We are more educated animals and know the differance from write and wrong. If you are to sick to tell that differance then you are suffering and we will take you out of your suffering. | |

| ok.. lets look at it from this.. if someone did this to a little girl..do you honestly think she died quickly..? more then likely not.. she was probly tortured.. so why kill the guy or girl who did it... give them a life sentence without parole.. force them to think about it every day for the rest of there life.. for most people thats worse then being put to death.. death is the easy way out if you ask me.. | |

| Jail is like a college frat house these days, and people dont mind DOC at all, better than county jail. Its a tough one, I like the idea of street justice, but in reality it doesnt work.. its a tough one, innocent people can and do get put through the system... I guess all things happen for a reason? I just dont know.. the death penalty is good, but now a days too complicated. If we could just take them out back and BOOM.. no lawsuits, nothing - great but in our world it doesnt work that way | |

* A college frat house where you are barely fed, get little exercise, probably lose your job upon entering, and risk getting your teeth knocked out if someone thinks you are looking at them the wrong way. I beg to differ, Mr Striphe. I did my fair share of time when I was a young rebellious man, and I assure you it is no picnic when you are on the other side of the steel door. |

Yeah you got a point there, I believe people should be executed for the type of murder. Drunk driving, as much as I hate to say this and I know people are going to hate me for this. But it will be a No. Because it can easily be you that gets behind the wheel when you have to. But yeah Rapeing a dead body then cutting her up and eating her eyeball and laughing about it. Definitely. |

| No steel doors actually, around here in Colorado. Most jails are now build in a bay fashion, with 8 different bunk beds, 9 bays, 2 flat screen TV's, washer dryer etc. The food is not the best I would agree (airmark), we have a recreation yard they get daily, and violence is not all the common (at least in Colorado).. other states are much different I realize | |

| Ok, I reckon putting these people in prison is taking up space were executing them saves money for the economy than paying to feed them and keep the lights on in the jail for them. I reckon they should be done like them middle east countries were people get in return a form of punishment that will forever deter them from doing the crime. Like robbery getting your hand chopped off. | |
