Quite a few users appear to keep family based contact lists. In times of war, it's vital, and in day to day activity it's handy just to watch for a variety of different things.

Personally, I'm hitting a little snag when it comes to NY and the colours assigned there for forum VIP posts.

I like to keep my family colours tied to the rough colour assigned to the city in VIP posting matters. It means at a glance I can see what's happening (then using other lists with symbols or a variety of hues within the one list you can control various other relationships/standings). I could make NY a completely separate colour (turquoise or w/e) that means I'd still have a fair idea at a glance, but as I believe quite a few people use a fairly similar system I said I'd throw it up here and see if a better solution might be possible.

So, the TL;DR is "Dark red used for NY in forums VIP posts is a little too close to the 'death' colour used for me personally".

I'm not sure of the exact solution that would best fit here, but the ideas I'm currently bouncing around....

1. - Allow the forum VIP post colours to be editable by users (vast majority probably would never use this option so it's probably using a nuke to clear out a mouse in terms of code required)

2. - Adjust the NY default colour to be less close in base colour to the death one (this is then hitting on subjective 'taste' issues and some will hate changes there while others will love them)

3. - Something completely different I haven't thought of yet......

I'm not keen on 1 or 2. They have far too many negatives for me to properly push for either. So..... I'm hoping someone can give me a 3rd option that works.

I can just use an unrelated colour and eventually start pairing the two in my head.... but I do hope 3 can come up with a better fix than that. If you've any ideas, please do fire them here.

It would be nice if we could all choose our own colours for the VIP/City colours for each location according to what appeals to us.

The current default could be kept as the neutral, pastel based option but if I wanted NY as lime green and PH as neon orange it would be nice to be able to exercise that option. As you say, given the fact that we already have this option for contact lists I shouldn't imagine it would be too hard, and it would be a pleasant change!
