GAME CHANGE: Historic Character Archive Started by: Squishy on Jan 14, '15 14:18

On the user search page, you now have the option to search our archives for characters dating back many years.  As of now, we have all of the more recent data - but everything older than a few years will show a lot of empty info.  This will be retroactively filled as we get spare time and get to go through our old old backups to retrieve the info.

I think it hasn't much value untill we get an all time top100 hall of fame list by genre: hours spent, wackstat, max effective bgs, credits owned, posts, etc...

Report Post Tip

Because half of those things you mentioned really have anything to do with how good your account is to be considered in a top 100 hall of fame.....

Also, eras change and so do requirements, as well as max/min abilities. That would make some things drastically lopsided, depending on the era.

It's fine the way it is, besides that I see a few names I looked up that say some of hose older players are "alive". It's always nice to look up some threads and other things from history, and this makes it possible.

Report Post Tip

the hard part with wackstat is pre and post cap and the difference in level of targets over the years e.g durdens, change in mia levels, player base, bg limits etc

Report Post Tip

Something is always better than nothing, I wd agree on that. But still Hall of fame is a needed thing, I think. Time spent, for example, isn't something that changes by seasons...

Report Post Tip

It is, actually. Many time periods had different average bodyguard counts, different cash income, different everything. All of those things directly impact the amount of time people can live trouble free - to have a 'hall of fame' that compares any of the things that have been suggested would be pointless, as you can't compare any of these time periods to each other fairly.

Report Post Tip

As I said, something is always better to nothing; I am not complainin' I try to give suggestions. Time u spent on a char before dying changes by what the rules where?

And game Hall of fame exist for quite a dozens of years now. Here, in our world we don't have any, xcept by current days count, and it still without nicks... Number of posts too? And for other things, a hall of fame is suposed to evolve: will u ask yourself in 15 years what was the situation 25 yrs ago? If yes, it still can be done, lol.

Report Post Tip

It's not that it "can't" be done, we're saying it shouldn't be done.

Visit one of the many areas in the suggestion forum where this has been raised before if you'd like to discuss it. The announcement of a very beneficial feature (thanks for this) isn't the place to suggest a very different and completely unrelated feature request.

Great news on the Character Archive front. Thanks. I already had it come in handy for two things I'd had in mind to look up from previous generations, with about 8 more where I'll need to wait a little time for the older DB stuff to come online. Already used and appreciated though. Cheers!

Bloody love this. Any hints on how detailed the old profiles are going to become once more work is done on it?

Wooboom

Hall of Fame is subjective. What you consider great someone else might not even be impressed by.
Report Post Tip

Yes Ragnarok, that's why browsing by topics/stats kind is interesting... I never said all time HOF was a necessity or impressing someone about something. I find it usefull for finding where u/i/the rest  stand.  And a current one HoF may be anonymous, just stats,  if some have problems with it...

I was wondering what would happen to my older characters once they cycled out of the Obits. This is a great addition IMO, as I like to refer to my bloodline through various links in my current character's BIO and of course in some role-plays.

Great addition here, love it!

The HOF suggestion has absolutely no link or relevance to this feature Wooboom. If you'd like to discuss it, tag your opinion onto one of the (many) existing suggestions of this feature (where it has already been discussed and debated). If you feel you've a new angle on it, then start a new thread with your new suggestion.

Hall of Fame is not a needed feature at least for historic purposes. However, perhaps for fun, we could do a voting thing on a Hall of Fame for last year. I've seen that done before... Could become a real tradition.

One quick note on this.... I can't see a fix for the problem I'm raising, but hopefully someone smarter than I might be able to.

The new archived characters are sitting on https://mafiareturns.com/news/uprofile.archive.php?id=786944 links (for good reason).

Our current characters are sitting on https://mafiareturns.com/news/uprofile.php?id=875171 links (again, for good reason).

When HubertCapone dies (next Tuesday at 10:54am), my links to his account will remain active for the normal amount of time (no idea what that is off the top of my head).

When that account moves to archive, the link I had for him will break and any old threads that linked to it (like this one) will have a 404 rather than a profile full of pertinent and relevant info.

I guess the question then becomes are the IDs used for the archive links going to be a 1:1 transfer from the old uprofile IDs?

If so, is there a way we could automate any links referring to uprofile IDs that no longer exist to be converted to the archive equivalent?

If we can/could do that, does it have the potential to break anything I'm not seeing? (that one I'd be very careful with... as it is a crazy funky change to be making)

Report Post Tip
If the ID's match, that should be possible Setanta.
But I can imagine this game had some database restructuring which would create problems to assume direct referrals.
Instead a message like this could be given:

"The profile you try to look up does not belong to a recent character. Try to look them up through the archive (link)".

An automated search could be initiated by such a link if the profile page allowed parameter queries, like your own profile does (name=x). For linking in profiles or like in your newspaper, that could be useful. But at the moment it seems that using that param, despite the value, always goes to your own profile. I'm not sure what the reason is, besides that it's more memory intensive to search for a name than an ID (but then it's just still a single search and not used in big quantities).

A different problem occurs then, that the wrong profile might turn up. I already discovered that my recent account-name was previously used by someone else too. Correct distinction on name only would be impossible. A background script on corresponding emails could work to get a result which is probably the account you're looking for.

But yeah, it all depends if the DB and structure has been changed :)

Just wanted to say thank you for introducing this. I'm enjoying searching, piecing the puzzles together and reminiscing. Just wondering to what extent will the information on the profiles be revived? Will we be seeing Quotes? Cheers.
