Crime Gone Wrong Turnabout - Part 1 Started by: ApolloJustice on May 05, '09 18:04
I was asleep when it happened. Another crime in a city of crimes, in a nation of crimes. I remember the days when I would be in court once a month but with the rash of killings and wars going on in the mafia court was an everyday appearance... What should I expect? It is their nature.

It was another crime job gone sour. A group of thugs decided to knock over a post office when one took more than his fair share. One of the others shot him for it. In the business things like this usually don't see court cases, but there was a hitch in their plan. There was a witness outside the family.

Arrests were made, the suspected assailant was brought to court and pleaded 'Not Guilty'. Something strange as most of the mobsters were fairly honest about their crimes. That's when he came to see me. The Riot! family lawyer.

It was a hot summer day that afternoon. I sat comfortably in my large and in charge leather chair when my receptionist walked in to let me know an appointment was here to see me. And in walked a tall slender man wearing a suit. With a simple gesture he sat down across from me in my office. The sun's rays painting on his figure on my floor in shadow. He nods and we sit in silence for a moment. Usually mobsters are forward and come into the office speaking what ails them, this one however waited patiently for me to acknowledge him.

"Good afternoon. My name is ApolloJustice. Attorney at law. How can I help you?" I said quickly and to the point.

"I... I... have been... accused. Accused of a crime I did not commit." He said with a very shaky voice.

"So I imagine you can afford my services if you are requiring legal council?" I blurted. What else could I say? I am a business man. He is not in my family, I am not required to work probono for him.

"Of course. My boss has sent me with enough money to even appease such a greedy lawyer as you sir." He said as he pulled up a briefcase. If you looked closely into my pupils at that moment you could easily see the dollar signs.

"So you say you didn't commit this crime?" I led straight into business after seeing a suitcase full of money.

"Yes, it was not I who pulled the trigger. I haven't even fired my gun yet since the boss gave it to me." He said to me. It was sort of startling, letting me know his aim wasn't professional yet. I knew his rank amongst his family, or actually what rank he was not. He wasn't made, so I guess it was very possible that he hadn't killed anyone yet in his life of crime.

"Well, if it wasn't you then who did it?" The common criminal excuse 'it wasn't me'. That excuse won't fly far unless this kid has got himself a good explanation.

"I... I... I don't know." He said softly.

"WHAT!? Are you serious? There is nothing for me to go on there. How do you expect me to defend you if you can't give me someone else to shift the court's eyes on?" I exclaimed. At this point I figured I should just cut him loose. I don't want to screw up my perfect winning streak in court. However, that money was calling my name. Breathing started sounding like cash registers. Birds outside my windows sounded like money being flipped through my fingers. Greed is a harsh mistress.

"Well, you see... during the robbery at the post office someone unexpected walked in. I heard the door swing open and I ducked and covered afraid of it being the cops. I ran into a nearby room, shut the door and hid under the desk. I was in fear of my life. Just then I heard lots of yelling, a gunshot, a scream, and lots more yelling. I was petrified. I stayed in that room until the cops showed up. They had to force me out because I was still in shock. I had never had to deal with death before. No one ever told me anyone could get hurt... When they brought me out... I saw his body..." He burst into tears telling the story. Now he was sobbing uncontrollably. How would he feel that way about someone he killed? Perhaps it was an accident? Or maybe his story was truthful... I was unsure. But I knew that money wanted me as badly as i wanted it, and with that testimony, however weak it was - I had a slight opening to defend him. It would take an awful lot of investigation however...

"Well... I suppose I can take your case. If anyone can defend you it is me." I said, still thinking about ways to spend that money. "Of course, you'll have to pay my fee."

"Certainly sir!" He said with his eyes lit up in excitement. No more tears. "How much will it be?"

"Everything in your suitcase." I said menacingly. Come here my money.

"Are you sure?" He said with a blank stare.

"Of course I am sure! That is what it is going to take to get me in court for you. Sign right here on the dotted line."

Come to papa.

He signs his name and hands me his suitcase. Bowing out the door he waves goodbye. "See you tomorrow sir." He says as the receptionist closes the door behind him.

"They can fuss with paper work... I am going to take a bath in." I open the suitcase "...tube socks?!" I exclaimed in disbelief... it wasn't a suitcase of money, but rather his clothes. He had the money in his car. The bastard. Oh well, I will make sure to resolve that - tomorrow. When investigation begins. I only have a few days until the court hearing. I will have to worry about the case more than the pay since I am now under contract.

To be continued...

(sorry, dunno how that got split up)
