((OOC: Just a little warning, there is quite a bit of profanity and racial slurs in the story, none are personal views, I'm just trying to set the context for the story; I don't want to offend anyone.)) MONTREAL, QUEBEC, CANANDA - NOVEMBER 1957 "What's taking this fuckin' dope so long-I'm freezing my balls off out here." Tranquillo Valente thought to himself as he stood on the corner of Jarry and Cremazie street in the St. Michel area of Montreal, just outside LePage's Grocery. It was a cold day, even for Canadian standards-a chilling -20 degrees Celsius. Tranquillo flipped the collar up on his wool pea coat and pulled his bowler cap down low against the snow and wind. He was waiting for Joey Battaglia, a mid level bruiser who was in the process of convincing the grocery owner to pay back the debt he had accumulated from half or late payments for protection. Tranquillo walked up to the window of the grocery and peered through, his breath fogging it up, he could see Joey reaching over the counter into the register while the clerk watched with large frightened eyes. Joey was a big man, then again anyone was compared to Tranq, he was only 5'8" while Joey stood at least 6'2". Joey had greying hair around his temples and an unshaven, square jawed face with a large nose. He looked like a brute, but he was much smarter than he appeared. He often liked to play dumb to avoid the responsibilities of being the intelligent one or the go to guy; probably why he stayed a goon for so long. Tranquillo saw Joey heading for the door and he walked over to meet him. "Did that limey Frenchman pay his dues?" "Not all of it, I squeezed as much as I could get." "Listen, Joey, you know what Paolo said right?" "Yeah, kill him if he don't pay." "So, what the hell brother? "You let me handle Paolo. What good is the grocer to us dead? A dead man can't pay back a debt." Tranquillo shrugged as he opened the passenger door of his Chevrolet Bel-Air and then got in the driver's seat. He slid the key into the ignition and turned and the engine just sputtered and died. "GODDAMN PIECE OF SHIT! EVERYBODY'S GOT CADILLACS, AND ME, I'M STUCK DRIVING THIS RED EYE SOAR." Tranquillo screamed as he kept turning the key. Joey chuckled as he sat back and re-counted the bills in his hands. * * * Twenty minutes later they arrived at the ice cream parlor near Miron park. The parlor served as a front for a small gambling den run by the local capo Paolo Verdi, he was the Montreal boss' representative in St. Michel. Joey and Tranquillo both dislike Paolo, he was a dummy, a figurehead. He really didn't know how to run things properly or how to conduct himself like a Mafioso. He was loud, brash and loved attention and was quick to violence despite being shorter than Tranquillo. Tranq and Joey B. stepped into the back room. It was filled with cigar smoke and dimly light by bare over-hanging bulbs and in the middle stood a round table with cards and various plates of cold cut meats and cheese. "Joeyyy my MAN! How did it go? Did ya get the money? Or did'ya plug him in the head, eh?" Paolo barked as he lifted his heavy frame off a wooden chair. His bald head gleamed as he made his way through the people huddled around the table to Joey. "He gave me some money Paolo, not all of it. I didn't pop neither skip." "What? So you're telling me the two of yous couldn't get this stinkin' frog to pay up AND you let 'em go free. WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS?" Tranquillo stood to the side and watched Paolo rip into Joey. Joe stood there and nodded, just taking all the blame for a decision that was probably the right one. "YOU BETTER GO BACK THERE AND KILL THAT CUNT FRENCHMAN, YOU HEAR ME?!" ordered Paolo as he chomped on his unlit cigar. He looked over at Tranq and shouted, "You too, you no good pansy motherfucker." Tranq snarled as he stepped back out the door to join Joey. "D'you believe the balls on that fuckin' prick?" Tranq asked as they walked back out into the cold winter afternoon. The snow had covered all the sidewalks and streets fully now, and the removal tractors were having a hard time keeping up with the snowfall. Tranq walked over to where he left his car only to find that it as completely buried. "Ahh shit. Just my luck. This day is fuckin' bullshit." Tranquillo muttered as he and Joey waved down a cab. They were let out another 20 minutes later infront of LePage's grocery. They walked over to the alleyway directly behind the store. It was a long narrows alley, lined on either side by apartment buildings and fire escapes as well as dumpsters. The pair stood right outside the door designated 'Deliveries' behind LePage's Grocery. Joey reached deep into his sand colored overcoat and produced a small .38 caliber police issue revolver. The gun looked almost like a child's toy in Joey's large caveman fists. "You're really going to clip this guy?" Tranquillo said without taking his eyes off the pistol. "Look, T, you gotta do what the boss says, even if ya don't like it. This is the path we've chosen and ya gotta deal with it, aight?" Joey said softly. "I can't do this man. What the hell, I've never even seen a fuckin' gun now I gotta come along on a hit. I can't do this." Tranquillo said to himself as Joey slowly opened the door. "Maybe if I was getting paid, or getting a new car or-" "Will you shut the fuck up!" Joey whispered harshly in his gravely voice, "Sorry." Was the barely audible reply. Joey crouched and slowly made his way down the dark, narrow hall towards the door up ahead which led into the small garage where the trucks came in. Tranquillo followed quietly behind, as they came up on the door they could hear voices. "Is it all there?" "Beh yeh, waddya think I'ma gonna ripa yous off?" "Count it Dino." "Ma, waddyou gonna count? Is all there, I told ya." "He's telling the truth Mike, all 20 Keys of crank." "That's why that fucker LePage ain't payin' his dues." Whispered Joey. "Who's in there?" Tranq asked. "I'm thinkin' it's Dino Camilli and Mike Marrone from the Cuntrera crew, they're into smack. They must be getting LePage's kickbacks. The other guy must be a Zip." Joey explained, his voice still low. "Shit Joe, there must be at least 500 Gs worth of smack in there..." Joey looked back at Tranquillo, and he could see through the darkness the glimmer in Joe's eyes. ((TO BE CONTINUED)) |
