In sooth, I know not why I am so sad Started by: Odd on May 09, '09 01:48
Walking down the sidewalk late at night with the flickering of the yellowish street lights barely illuminating the ground around it, you pass by an opening to an Alley, in your peripheral you see some movement down between the buildings. Pausing to get a better look, squinting down the alley....craning your neck to see...there is a breathe on the back of your neck and a raspy, whispered voice that says

"I've been expecting you"

Motioning you to a nearby bench, Odd begins to speak

"I have to tell you that I am a bit torn about somethings, well...one thing in particular. I have been bothered by it in the past, and I'm not sure that I still don't feel the same. Now, I say I am torn because, as you might have noticed, I am partial to the theatrics. You know, anything to set the mood and put on a show. I do like to be the center of attention on occasion. To my point, it seems as though lately, there are more and more thespians among us. Day after day there is another hard core, blood thirsty, tough as nails, Mafioso, prancing about the streets putting on 'plays' for the rest of us. Did you know that some of these plays you can actually participate in?! It's like audience participation! I know its like a dream come true...you too can be an actor. Be careful though, before you know it, there are will be a leotard wearing Don in every city...what has our world come to..."

Looking down at the ground for just a moment you return your gaze to where Odd was standing just a jiffy ago, from the bench beside you, there comes a *sigh*. Odd, sits patiently waiting for you to catch up

"Is it me, or are there to many people hiding behind false identities or false portrayals by characters in these dramatic scenarios of performance art? Is this a clever cover up to elude the FBI? I don't know anymore, maybe this old cat just isn't up on the new times...."

turning to address him with a response you see hes gone, his cane resting against the bench and then a whisper from no where

"Be seeing you."

Slamming down his cigarette as was his father's custom, Mudkips ponders to himself in the alley, wondering silently if Odd can still hear him...

While noticing the same progression, I have found myself asking some of the same questions Odd has just asked; and yet I find that his beliefs may be misguided. An unfortunate side effect of this world of ours is to become paranoid and worry that all actions taken have ulterior motives.

Is it not every mafioso's job in this world of ours, from Petty Thief to Godfather, or Mother as it may be, to paint the blank canvas of this world of ours to resemble the vibrant tapestry of our lives? The actions, reactions, and events of our world are passed down by oral accounts alone, and why shouldn't they be spoken with eloquence and theatrics? If these accounts were expressed with dull disinterest, would we still listen intently on the edges of our collective seats waiting for the next gut wrenching detail?

I do believe that Odd may be referring to the more irrelevant reports often given in the streets, those accounts which rarely are affected by the actions of us in this world, but does that make them less important? I believe that these should be embraced, regardless of who constructs them, even if their only objective is entertainment. To be honest, if only the important goings on were reported, I fear that in peacetime the streets would fall silent, the leaders and their members would grow bored, and the streets may grow bloody more often, due to the growing tensions behind closed doors by people itching for excitement in an exciting world.

Do these stories prevent war? No, I don't begin to believe they have that power. However, I do believe that they are the social lubricant this world needs to function smoothly, and I for one, embrace them wholeheartedly.

Turning to leave, Mudkips flipped his card over his shoulder having it land softly, perched atop Odd's abandoned cane...

I'd love to hear your view on my side of things however. Look me up some time...

..The streetlight flickered again, and before it lit up again, Mudkips was gone; a flash from his holstered .38 Special the, and a puff of smoke from a fresh cigarette the only signs he had ever stood there at all...

reappearing in the smoke left by Mudkips, Odd begins his retort.

Don't get me wrong Mr. Mudkips, where ever you may be, I understand that it is necessary to communicate effectively with theatrics. I just assume that one would exercise this art playing the part of them self. To often we see mafioso's playing the role of another fictional mafioso, and encouraging others to do the same. Not to say this is all we see in the streets, because its not. I see others conversing and going about a REAL everyday life here in the streets without "making up" a alternate character. Perhaps those that want to be thespians should open a theater to put on shows. Come find me, and I will fund such a place. I'll even pay to have it advertised in Marietta's (and company) Chronicle. I just think that Mafioso's should keep their theatrics in the theater, not in the streets.

My point is THIS would be an example of theater in the streets. This was made up, none of this happened...and should be moved to a stage.

However, THIS was a real life event, people happened in on this occurrence as it was happening.

I am all for being theatrical in real life, but making up a play in the streets about something cool you thought up...isn't, might as well add music to it and hire professional actors. Those should be taken to the theater, and presented on a stage for the entertainment of the theaters guests. Why not take your passion of the theater and create a business? After all, this is what makes our world go round..business.

This is an excellent discussion to bring to the streets, Odd. Whenever I come across these people, I always assume that they like to exaggerate about their recent jobs and such. If you ask me, our lives are exciting enough without having to embellish upon them with fictional stories. Every day I do something that the ordinary blue-collar joe can only imagine in his worst nightmares. That sort of action would make a great story, except that most of my dealings cannot be discussed in public.

Hell, we can talk about some of the smaller stuff though, right? If it is just a couple of the old men standing around, I could tell them about that liquor store I just robbed. The cashier was so terrified he shit his pants. As he was handing me the money, I could see his hands shaking and the excrement running out the bottom of his pant leg.

I would also support the opening of a theater, but I would be a little suspicious of mobsters who spent too much time there. Perhaps they missed their calling in life?
