Respect and You Started by: Premier on May 13, '09 15:56
The room was dim, the light above the table would sway every so often as the wind blew in from the only window in the room. Three men sat around the round oak table covered in green felt. ThomasRourke was first to lay down his cards, straight of diamonds. Premier with a bluff and ForkRourke with a flush.

"How do you do it...." Thomas sighed, the mobster took off his hat and ran his fingers through his hair before replacing the hat back on his head. "Every time and I know you aren't cheating like those kids on the streets because I've been watching you ever since we started playing."

"I'm flattered Thomas." Fork replied. "But you know me, it's all in the cards, I have no need to cheat."

Thomas pushed the chips that were in the middle towards his friend and trusted right hand Fork and started to collect the cards.

"Maybe I should start bluffing like Premier over here." Thomas said as he started to shuffle the cards in his large hands, a few cards slipping out gave Fork a light chuckle.

"Thomas you aren't a very good bluffer, maybe you should just go downtown and have the kids teach you how to cheat. Maybe you can all work out some sort of deal. They'll teach you how to play the game and in return you'll give them some street credit."

Premier had chimed in, also laughing at the end up his own statement. A problem had started to really hit it's peak in the seven cities. Respect, or the lack of it. It seemed any unknown nobody gangster or even wise guy felt they had the right to run their smart mouth to anyone they felt like it.

"Ha!" Thomas retorted. "I'd rather give them my first born child. Those fools have to earn their own bones, no one is going to give them shit."

After the deck was shuffled enough for Thomas he passed it to Fork offering a cut. Fork split the deck in half and slid the cards back to Thomas, the cards were quickly passed out after this tradition. Premier watched the cards has the smoothly landed in front of him, this process put him into a little haze until Fork reminded him that he was small blind. Premier slid a few chips into the middle and then turned towards Thomas.

"Have either of you seen the streets lately?" He didn't wait for them to answer. "My eyes have seen disturbing things in the past few weeks. Gangsters trying to school Made Men. Really, what are things coming to?"

One would be able to tell both men were listening to their associate of New York, but Fork was the first to pull his attention off of his cards, which was another nice hand, no surprise.

"Aye, I have seen it. They all run around shouting about honor, loyalty, omerta and respect, but about 5% of them actually follow these words"

Thomas added chips to the pot, upping it and without taking his eyes off his cards added into the conversation.

"It should be common knowledge that a gangster should never, ever talk down to a made man. Made man is an esteemed rank, it's worked for, it's earned. When one receives the rank of Made it means that you are accepted and trust by the family. Lots of benefits come with the rank. One of those benefits is that one would be able to put kids in their place." Thomas looked over to Premier. "Your bet."

Premier called whatever Thomas had thrown in without even looking at his cards and continued the conversation.

"Now, Thomas I hope you aren't implying that any Made can just run there mouths to anyone. I know you aren't, as you are a smart man, but I get your drift. If a gangster walks up to a made man's speech in our lovely streets and starts talking crap I hope that made man puts that gangster in his place. If we turned the tables and a made man just started talking shit to a gangster for no apparent reason things would be different." Premier paused. "There are few guidelines we live by, but one of those would include everything you do reflects your family."

Just then the old wood door opened from the front of the room. Premier reacted quickly, his hand on his side at his gun as he stood up and waited for the door to open. It only opened to Deano, Mob Boss of Las Vegas, a cigar hanging out of his mouth and a girl on his left side wearing just about nothing. Deano pushed the girl off of him and walked into the room easing Premier back into his chair.

"Started without me, I see how it is."

Deano took the only open seat between Fork and Premier.

"Well we know how you get with the ladies."

Fork replied.

"Speaking of women..."

Deano started but was quickly cut off by Thomas.

"Lets not speak of women tonight, remember what happened last time?"

Thomas shifted his eyes from Deano to Fork.

"It was only one night!"

Fork exclaimed throwing his cards into the center.

"One night neither of you will live down." Thomas said. "But I can't give Deano a hard time about it, I would have thought you were a women also Fork, you really looked good in that pink feather boa."

"So what is the conversation tonight then? Drugs, guns, Premier's new std?" Deano smirked at his old friend. He casually picked up everyone's cards like it wasn't a big deal he had just interupted their last hand.

"Ha, ha Deano. Funny you should say that." Premier chimed in. "We were just discussing respect in the seven cities."

Deano shuffled the cards a few times and started to deal. His eyebrow raised slightly at the mention of respect.

Ahhhh yes, respect. It isn't like the old days of our forfathers anymore. Sure the rules are still there but it seems the chips on the shoulders of our youth are alot bigger.

Deano sets the deck down and scans his hand full of utter shit, and tosses a hefty bet into the pot.

I guess this is the new breed that is coming off the boats nowadays. They know it all and respect nothing. Running before they can walk. It is almost like punishing them is like teaching math to a rock. Sadly they always seem to go too far and pay a hefty price for the lack of respect.

Deano grabs a glass and pours three fingers of whiskey for himself and asks the others if they want any.

Just the other day I had the misfortune of hearing about a young Earner of mine. He was blatantly disrespecting a mademan in public. Above all this, he was asked to step down by 2 godfathers and 2 Dons. Yet he brazenly kept yapping away like he was the be all end all of everything. Ya know guys,I am wondering if we did something wrong or if the water back across the pond is no longer fit for drinking?

I couldn't help but over hear this discussion. I've been around the organization and the different families for years now, and I too have picked up on the sense of disrespect and uncaring that comes from the newer generation of Mafiosi.

Holds out a gold plated lighter incase anyone needs a flame.

I think these new guys take their lives for granted; assuming no matter what they're always going to be safe as long as they have a crew. These youngsters have a distorted view of honour and loyalty; they expect to be backed up by their families when they're out on the street running their mouths. However, this is not and will never be the case. You can't expect to shoot your mouth off and not pay for it. The history of our way of life is a testament to this.

Takes a long drag of his cigar and then leans against the door frame.

It's a real shame, but I don't think it's ever gonna change. You can clip 'em, but their brothers, sisters, sons and daughters will always be back.

Respect is something that is hard learned for many people, for example the Asylum family line.

Given many chances for respect but shit on each chance he got.

Respect is a hard thing to get. But when you do get it and than screw it up. I think it lives with thier ancestors. I mean when their new family comes off the boat, you might think they will screw it up as their elder one did. And than they gotta earn the respect again but its going to be a bit harder than it was before.

Straightening his tie, ApolloJustice approached the conversation taking place in the streets to give his input.

Respect. A code that many have forgotten. Both the new and the old. It is the simple principle that our way of life was built upon.

I believe that if we can get the current generation of mafioso to understand and follow the rules set in place by those who started us in this country. The reason why we are considered organized crime is we follow some forms of rules. Just not the rules set by common society.

Honour amongst criminals. Respect amongst thieves.

Marietta stubbed out her cigarette into the small, crystal little dish that sat on the table next to her. She shifted in the comfortable armchair, narrowing her eyes at the men playing cards in front of her. Sure, she had played the first few rounds, but eventually each game ended the same way; the male ego took over and the game became a pissing contest. At one point the buy-in for each round would get just a little too high for the woman's tastes, and she would gracefully bow out and sit in the corner, amusing herself by reading a novel and waiting for the game to end.

Today, however, the men were being especially chatty. After listening to various players add their commentary on Premeir's concern over lack of respect in their world, she sighed and stood from her chair, walking back towards the poker table and stopping between Thomas and Fork's chairs.

"It's startling. Almost frightening, the lack of respect that seems to occur all too often lately. People are so ingrained in their own lifestyles lately, focusing on the quickest way to rank or the easiest way to get a bold suit, that they don't seem to remember the staples of our Thing. The bread and butter, really."

She paused, watching as Fork casually plucked up his last card, revealing that he had drawn a straight.

"Nice hand," she said, continuing as if she had never stopped.

"I'd like to chalk up the lack of respect from youngsters to a new generation that perhaps we older ladies and gentlemen just do not understand, but maybe... maybe we're not taking a harsh enough stance on things? Maybe we're not teaching them correctly. I notice that I say things at times that can be disrespectful, and of course! Why not? I've worked hard to be where I am today. And hell, most of the time it's just an offhand comment to a friend or an associate that gets overheard and taken out of context. A little humor among friends, you know? Yet I believe that we too forget that 'leading by example' is often the easiest way to teach the lessons around here. The young, idealistic people- they watch us and they follow in our footsteps to be like us. Maybe there's something to that?"

Marietta shrugged and laughed at herself.

"Or maybe I'm just getting old. Either way, I would probably fold, Thomas. Fork's got a pretty diesel hand this round."

Tranquillo removed the cigar from his mouth and then put it out in the ashtray and tucked it behind his ear.

The foremost reason for the disrespectful outbursts, I believe, is without a doubt resent. Many Mafiosi resent the success of others and feel that they instead deserve the power, for no good reason. And what better way to gain everyone's attention and try to earn 'respect' than to come to these streets and inaccurately imitate the way leaders make announcements or launch debates. Unfortunately, many of these lowly thugs and gangsters don't have the experience or the proper tone to make themselves heard appropriately. Sure in the past mafia chieftains made demands and statements rather curtly, but they earned their position, which allows them this freedom.

Jokes walks into the doorway from the back room and leans against it to light a smoke.

He doesn't say anything, because he believes the only thing you start with in your life is your word, and the only thing you can earn or give of importance is respect. So, he stands there smoking his ciggarette, listening to his new friends and bosses talk, waiting for an invite to the conversation or an order to carry out.

Respect seems it has been going up as of late.

I think in recent times respect in general has gone up. Sure you'll have the occasional thug who thinks he's god, but that's expected from people who have not been taught any lessons. I think people are being more respectful as of late mainly to due an increased awareness of the fact that disrespect, however blatant or otherwise, will set you up for a nice long rest with the fishes.

I agree, I never understood how some random people can just come into an area and assume their self righteousness. Im of course just speaking in generalities, not about anyone in particular. But whenever I see it happening, Im always thinking, "what gives them the right?" and sometimes you just gotta test their worth to see if they are deserving of their claims.
