You do need to earn points to gain ranks, but there are also time limits. You start out as a civilian. After a few crimes, you turn to a petty thief. When you join a family or at 12 hours, you become a thug. At 24 hours, you become a gangster. From there, each rank has point requirements as well as a minimum time. The minimum time for goomba is 48 hours. For each rank after that, add 3 days. With the min time for Don being 40 days and Godfather 120 days. Nobody can see the points they've earned, but as hinted at by Rourkey, you gain experience points from petties, jb's, posts and most activities on the site.
