(This story was experienced by 4 people and compiled from journals, notes and letters. The people involved were Don Brick Pollitt, Duke5078, Marc_Jamieson and Pickles of Elegido Corp) Pickles ran for her life, twisting her right ankle as her inadequate shoes tangles in the underbrush. She plummeted down a steep embankment and swore as her firearm leapt from her sweaty grasp. Even though she knew it would give way her position she shouted as loud as she could while pushing herself back up to her feet. "GET THE CAR STARTED! THEY'RE ON TO US!" She fumbled for her gun and kept running. A bullet zipped over her shoulder and dug itself deep into a pine tree, warning her that her pursuers were much closer than she wanted. "START THE GODDAMN CAR!!!!" Duke threw down his cigarette and slid into the front seat of the wretched looking burnt out Chevy that belonged to the newest member of Elegido. The ignition turned several times. "Come on you piece of shit!" The engine finally started with a loud back fire as Marc came sliding down from the tree where he was perched and scrambled for the car. He slammed his fist on the hood and the car jumped to life after guttering to a pathetic stop after the backfire. Duke revved the engine several times making sure it didn't die while he reached around and opened the suicide door so Pickles could jump right in. Pickles was still fleeing towards the car when she turned to fire off a few shots of her own. Hearing a loud curse and a crash from behind her made her smile a little as she exploded through the bushes near the vehicle and waved away the cocked guns of her own men. "GET OUT OF HERE!" She bellowed as she hopped in front seat, pushing Duke into the middle. "Rabbit, get in the back!" Marc jumped into the back of the car through the open window and ducked as a bullet ricocheted off the frame. Duke pulled out his gun and fired into the brush on the passenger side of the car while Pickles put the shrieking engine in gear and jerked forward. Marc gave a yelp as he was thrown backwards into Duke's seat. "Now what?" he asked, one hand clutching his hat. "Shoot your gun dummy!" Marc fumbled for his gun and shot it out the back window at their pursuers. One yelled and violently tumbled off a ridge while the other reloaded his gun. Marc turned around and yelled at Duke to go faster. Duke stomped on Pickles foot to get the car moving and moved to put one hand on the wheel. "Ow, shit!" Pickles stomped the gas pedal and punched Duke in the ribs. "Leave my car alone! I know how to drive you pansy!" Marc took a moment to swivel his head and bellow at the reluctant get away driver. "THEN DO IT!" Duke jumped into the back seat with Marc to continue shooting at the men who were now pursuing them in a slick looking Ford. Pickles swerved hard enough to send Marc's head into the door frame and giggled to herself as he cursed. After rubbing the pain away Marc and Duke begin counting their hits to see who can get off the most rounds before they were too far to shoot. Duke's gun clicked as a sign of it being empty and he aimed it past Marc as he went to reload it. "Jesus Mary and Joseph you know we're supposed to be hitting them...not me! Right?" Pickles lets out another rough laugh as Marc looked at Duke incredulously. "We lost them, for now. We need to meet up with Brick and see if he got what he was after." The frail looking girl patted the breast pocket of her vest and muttered when she realised she dropped her cigarettes in the woods. Almost on cue, Marc reached over the seat with a cigarette he'd just lit. "Thanks." Pickles muttered. Duke slid another Clip into his gun and cocked it then pulled himself back into the front seat. In the back, Marc loaded his browning with a new clip and lit himself a new cig after having passed Pickles the first one he was going to smoke. After a few minutes of silence, Pickles spoke up. "It's a 45 minute drive to the meet up location, you guys keep a sharp lookout." She looked over at Duke who was pulling a Tommy gun up from the floor of the car. "I'll tell you what. We had better have not risked out lives for no reason." "Well. At least we got what we were coming for right?" Marc said in a hopeful voice as he rubbed the bruised spot on his skull. "I think so. What did you guys get? I managed to find the notebook we were after." Duke took off his hat to wipe the sweat off his brow, realizing there was a bullet hole in formerly new felt. "Son of a Bitch! This was a new hat." Pickles rolled her eyes. "Marc?" "I got four cases of the good stuff." "Good stuff?" Pickles asked, taking a nervous drag on her smoke. Duke pulled the blueprints to a building out of his coat breast pocket and smoothed them down across his lap. Pickles looked over her shoulder at Marc. "Four cases of anything is a lot. How did it all fit?" As Duke looked up from the blueprints his head spun. "Yes how DID it fit?" he asked. Marc pointed to the trunk and the rest of the back seat which was crammed with wooded crates and littered with shell casings. "Maybe thats why we were so slow." the young boy shrugged, then looked around shiftily. "Oh yeah some of them came loose so just watch the peddles." "Oh for Fuck's sake!" Pickles shouted as a jar rolled near her feet. "We're loaded with MOONSHINE??" "I thought thats what we were supposed to be getting?" Marc's voice cracked a little. Duke scooped up the loose bottle and popped it open, feeling a little light headed after taking a whiff. He quickly closed it again and handed it back to Marc. Pickles' grip on the steering wheel was so tight her fingers had turned white. "Oh Jesus! Who didn't tell me?!?!" She sounded calm, but angry. Marc sat in the back, beginning to sweat. "We weren't supposed to be getting moonshine? Oh shit." Duke looked around the fully loaded car. "What were we getting?" he asked. Marc felt sick to his stomach. "I was told by Brick we were supposed to be picking up a load of goods, he gave me directions on where to find it...these were the only things I saw." He cast a frightened glance at the seething driver. "First off," Pickles ground out between clenched teeth. "NOBODY SMOKE." She watched as Marc flicked his cigarette out the window and as Duke tucked his lighter back in one of his vest pockets. "Secondly," she said, her voice still icy. "If you are religious, START PRAYING WE DON'T CRASH!" Marc pulled his onyx rosary from under his shirt and began furiously saying 'Hail Marys.' "And thirdly, you had better hope this is what we were supposed to get." She looked over at Duke, who was looking uncomfortable. "What did you get Pickles?" Duke asked. "I got shot at!" she shouted. She glowered. Duke held out his hat. "We all did for your info. And stop yelling." At the demon fury glance from Pickles he sunk lower in his seat and muttered something about respect. Pickles sighed. "Sorry." She muttered almost imperceptibly "Ok, keep a good lookout guys. We have a while before we're safe. Probably another twenty minutes until we're out of KCS territory." Duke continued to look at the blue prints in his lap, nodding as his index finger traced the pale white lines of a floorpan. Marc turned around from his post in the back seat and peered over Duke's shoulder. "Whatcha got there Duke?" "I think I over heard the guards talking about a factory of some kind. It's used as a cover for bootlegging. They were even talking about drugs too." "This is the best of the best right?" "They said it was packed with top notch goods. What we got were just samples. I guess the KCS needed proof that what they were buying was worth the money" Duke looked out his window trying to see anything out of the ordinary while Marc got on his knees in the back seat to look out the back window. He gasped. A black sedan was following the loaded chevy and gaining speed. Duke turned around to see why Marc was gasping and jerked out of his seat, grabbing the Tommy gun, letting the blue prints fall to the floor. "Oh boy." Marc checked the ammo in his gun and reached for the bigger weapons. Duke positioned himself in the back, using one of the boxes to steady himself. "Lets lay down some cover fire." With Pickles going top speed, both men waited until the car was close enough to aim for and let loose. Duke opened his door and it flew backwards. He stepped out onto the running board and opened fire with his tommy gun as Pickles slowed to make sure she didn't rip the door, or Duke, off of the car. The other vehicle swerved and flipped, landing in a ditch. A few screams were heard from the remaining men as they leapt from the burning car. Duke sighed in relief, pulling himself back into the car and slamming the door. "Whew that was close!" Marc nodded, his face pale and glistening with sweat. "N-no kidding." Duke went check his watch but it was missing, he swore and looked over at the jittery Marc. "Good thing you said those Hail Marys eh?" Marc nodded, his fingers slipping over the beads. "Duke, I'm not sure if they helped as much as I wanted. I'm dead either way. If this isn't the right stuff, Brick will kill me. If it is...Adrian will kill me." Duke laughed. "Brick wont kill you. And either way, we are getting stuff to sell... or drink." Duke gave Marc a reassuring smile. "Besides we will blame it on Pickles if it goes south. She was leading this expedition." Duke laughed at the weak smile Marc was trying to flash. The younger gangster let out a hiccuping laugh then began to snicker hysterically until Duke smacked him with his fedora. "Ease up kid." He ruffled Marc's hair "Crazy SOB. But that's why you are on the team." *** The worn out Chevy sputtered to a stop outside of one of Elegido's many hideouts where Brick was gulping down the last of a frosty Dr Pepper as he sat on the crumbing front steps. When the car pulled up he stood and strolled over to the motley crew. Thirsty for another soda he reached past Duke into the car and pulled out a bottle that was peeking out of one of the wooden crates. Duke uselessly tried to grab the bottle back from his boss. "Umm Brick, I don't think you want to..." Brick popped the top and cursed when the moonshine sprayed out, drenching him in the foul smelling liquid. "Told ya" muttered Duke. Duke began to unload crates from the Chevy and stack them on the porch of the hideout. Marc gathered loose bottles and carefully put them in one of the crates that had spilled open during the drive. Pickles sat in the driver's seat, fingers still curled tightly around the steering wheel. "Oh Brick, I wouldn't go near an open flame for a while if I were you." Duke called as he set down another box. Marc looked at Brick who was clearly fuming. "Um Duke...something tells me we screwed up" Duke walked back to the Chevy and pulled out the last crate of 'Dr Pepper.' "What makes you say that Marc?" Marc set down his case of moonshine and stares at Brick whose anger alone could ignite the alcohol on his $4000 suit. Brick was standing by the car, red faced and drenched in moonshine, not saying a word. But his look said it all. "Uh boss?" Marc said looking like he might pee his pants. "Is there...uh...something wrong?" "Is there something wrong?" Brick snapped back. "We got the Dr. Pepper like you asked." Marc fidgeted, twiddling his thumbs. Duke looked down and his shoes and kicked some dirt. Pickles shook her head and sat in the cab, chain smoking now that the volatile alcohol was far away from her and the fumes had dissipated. She knew they had screwed up as soon as Duke had told her they had alcohol instead of what Brick had ACTUALLY asked for. Brick grabbed one of the bottles, and threw it against a large rock. The bottle exploded both from the force of the impact and from the pressure of the woodgrain alcohol. "This is NOT Dr Pepper, this is Moonshine." His voice was clear and deadly. Duke Stepped forward to take responsibility for the mix up "I thought moonshine would bring in more money than Dr. Pepper." Pickles could hear the strange strangled sound coming from Brick as his face turned red, then a blotchy purple. The boss was pissed. Pickles lit another cigarette, glad they hadn't all gotten blown up during the pell mell drive back to meet up with Brick. Although by the looks of it, that would have been a better fate. Marc went to Duke's side to explain his part in the mix up. "Ok ok. Brick. I didn't know what it was until we got it loaded and were taking off! This was the only stuff at the coordinates you left us! Pickles said she found a few things inside the shack but you'll have to ask her what." At this, Pickles got out of the car, carefully stubbing out her smoke on the dashboard. "I found a bunch of receipts, a hundred k in gold certificates and a notebook filled with bad sketches of boobies, lock combinations and recipes." Pickles said. Marc furrowed his brow and gulped what would surely be his last breath as Brick's hand twitched towards his gun. His saving grace came with Brick's next question. "Recipes? Do you have that book?" Duke looked at Marc, Marc looked at Pickles. Pickles glared back at Marc. "Rabbit." Pickles snarled. "I threw it in the back when I got in the car. Weren't you reading it? I mean, when you weren't shooting crooked?" Marc rubbed his head. "Uh...yeah there was a great recipe for cacciatore in it that I wanted to try." Marc jumped as Brick fired his pistol at the young man's feet. "Oh for Fuck's Sake!" Pickles shouted. She turned and jerked open the back door, rummaging around until she found the battered notebook. She tossed the book to Marc and stayed where she was, leaning against the car like it was a giant talisman against Brick's anger. "Th-thanks" Marc's voice cracked like a little girl's as he handed the book to Brick. Brick watched the book go from Pickles to Marc, then reached for it. "This was at the Dr Pepper plant?" There was a heavy silence. It filled the air like the moonshine fumes had earlier and clung to everything. Pickles felt her eye twitch involuntarily. She knew she was bad at directions, but really? This bad? Marc cleared his throat. "No this was at a little shack off the premises. Nobody could tell us where the Dr Pepper bottling plant was." Duke pulled out the blue prints he had been reading. "But we got these." Pickles had been turning various shades of white and finally pushed herself away from the car. "PLANT!? What PLANT? We went to a shack in the middle of god damned nowhere!! We shot half a dozen guys getting in and out, we got chased by cars, we dodged bullets and and and..." She sits down with a plop and looks up at her boss in furious amazement. Brick grabbed the book out of Marc's hand and greedily flipped through it. "Yes a PLANT. A bottling plant. You were supposed to get Dr Pepper." He looked up at Marc. "You have a question for me?" "So, they have a huge plant, where they manufacture Dr. Pepper by the gallon, and they have their secret recipe written in a crummy old hand written ledger in an unguarded shack in the middle of nowhere?" Duke sat down next to Pickles and bummed a cigarette. Pickles shook her head and gestured at Marc and Brick. "I have a headache. You men kill me." Duke nodded. "We kill us too. But as for hiding a secret recipe in the middle of nowhere, that would have been the last place I would have looked." Marc flopped down and lit a cigarette off the end of Pickles'. Duke looked at Brick, who kept feverishly flipping through the notebook and muttering. "Wait, this book may save this little failed mission." Duke let out a sigh while Marc looked like he was on the verge of passing out. Brick pointed to a page in the old book. "This might actually be the recipe to Dr Pepper " |

And there it was, the birthday heist that went so wrong that it turned out right. Brick could laugh about it now. He wasn't laughing much that night. Drenched in moonshine and close to going up in smoke, the luck of his bumbling crewmembers was astounding. It just goes to show you, sometimes it's better to be lucky than good. glares at Duke, Pickles and Marc and if I have any advice for those involved in the heist, it would be "You should go play some poker, because damn are you lucky?!" So, what began as rumors of a case of rare Dr Pepper for the taking, turned into a a gaffed heist, a secret recipe, and a bottle of home made Cherry Dr Pepper, a gift for Pepper on her birthday. So, well done guys. You may have fumbled your way through this one, but you made it through, followed the recipe, and were the first to create Cherry Dr Pepper. You'll all get raises for this. |

Marc gaped at the smudged writing in he book as pepper shook her head "no that's coke" she grumbled. "Coke...I hate coke" said Brick and flicked through the book. Marc watched, his impatience mounting as Brick leafed through the pages shaking his head. Finally in a risky move, Marc grabbed the book from Brick's hands. He knew he would be dead in a few minutes as Brick's hand twitched angrily towards his holstered gun. As he looked at the last page he noticed that the back cover was thicker than the front. The cacciatore recipe as taped to the cover so he flicked out his knife and gently loosened it from the cover. from behind it fell a small lump of folded papers that, when opened, contained 23 distinct ingredients plus the soda water. He shakily held out the paper to Brick and said "This is the recipe to Dr. Pepper." |
