Wouldn't it be cool to have different guns? instead of the generic pistol you could get a Tommy Gun. And you could earn these by either buying them, or as you climb the ranks. 

Who says you have a generic pistol? Where in the game does it say you have a pistol? You have a gun, that's all the game says. What that gun is, is entirely up to you and your character.
