So I am thinking of giving Linux a try I've heard various things. I was wondering what in your opinions would be the best Distro to download. Please give reasons, and explanation along with why you don't like other Distros if you can.... So far I think I sized it down to Ubuntu -vs- OpenSUSE Now; If one of the others might be better suited for me and i like your reasoning ill give it a shot.
My uses in this wont be strong use, surfing web, mafia, music, videos, |

Linuxmint is often the best choice for beginners. If you want ubuntu i would suggest you to try them with gnome desktop. Its much better than unity. you can find more info in http://distrowatch.com/ There are thousands of distros, and you can spend years till you try most of them. skype works fine, for photoediting there is GIMP (it is good, but hard to learn how to use it). i have made few videos with openshot, thats is very easy to use. Using GNU/Linux you will have the opportunity to learn more things about how your computer, and the software that runs works. All different distros have support. Usually they have one forum and users who might have questions can find help there. If you have a hardware malfunction problem and you don't know how to solve this, there are some people there who will help you. |

there is an option during installation to get the proprietary drivers. all hardware is auto recognized, and the drivers are installed automatically. Just like in windows. In Gnu/linux they built their own software. The problems are with the graphic cards, and sound cards, because noone besides the people who wrote the software code know how this cards work. So in Linux community people use reverse engineering (translating 10010101010 to source code) to be able to re-write a driver. If you will use Suse, or Debian, or Arch, or Ubuntu its your choice. I suggest you try everything and see what works better for you. Debian works fine in my pc, and in one of my laptops, but in another one laptop it didnt worked, so i had ubuntu. The environment you will work is called desktop manager. Gnome is one of my favorites, unity is the ubuntu desktop manager. KDE is a very nice one, Enlightenment is a desktop manager which makes it look more cool than mac. You can install one of the absolutely free distributions of GNU/Linux. I have tried Trisquel, and it works fine. You'll find them in www.fsf.org . Those distros have no proprietary software at all. I suggest you Lnuxmint because is the most simple, and the install is no more than 15 min give or take. |

I use Fedora on my daily basis, it's pretty easy to set up everything. The only downside is that nvidia drivers tend to damage the system so you need to keep the drives already installed.
Almost every distro it's easy to use, the only thing that changes it's the general flavour. One or two quick console commands and you have everything in order |

Guys, I got a question; I'm using LXDE Lubuntu on my secondary PC, as you probably know 16.04 LTS is out. So I upgraded just a few days ago. However there appears to be some dependency problems, for instance during the installation of a simple media player like VLC I get the error of "Package dependencies cannot be resolved." I tried fixing dpkg by running some simple commands but it didn't work so I just wanted to ask what's the word on that? |
