You know what the beauty of this game is to me? It's not the joy you get seeing the success screen. It's not the elation when you first nail that Don account. It's not even the pride when you first get CL.

It's the roleplay. I don't do it in the conventional term. I don't sit and write italicised stories as I'm not all that great at it; though I admire those who do. What I do do, however, is play a different character every time around. One week I'll be extolling old time values of omerta and honour; the next week I'll have a different character bemoaning the outdated traditions.

That, for me, is the beauty. The absolute freedom of this game that no other can boast. A game that has produced a jar of preservative, a cheesy monarch, a flying pig and a man who loves sluts as Leaders. Where else can you get that level of diversty? The total lack of shackles that lets you be whatever you want to be? You can't get it anywhere else. That's why, despite my various sabbaticals, I keep coming back.

This time though, I noticed within only hours that something had gone. The edge, the thing I love...The diversity even. I'm not calling anyone out here, it's nobody's 'fault', it's just something the game slips in and out of every few months as it constantly evolves. I can remember times like this before, when UN were in power for instance, there was no diversity. I'm not talking about the leadership, just generally the way the game was played.

Again, in this current climate i'm not talking about a dull leadership, as I honestly haven't been properly playing enough to comment on that. What I have found, and I may be proven wrong obviously, is that everyone seems to be playing to the same tune. We're all mobsters who are very articulate and well spoken, who all hold the same values dear. That's great, but the game needs variation. I don't mean we should all abandon the fundamental concepts of the Mafia as we see fit, but I do think people should be more tolerant.

Obviously the eagle eyed among you will have noticed I'm referencing my own speech in the streets. Arguably I acted in a thoroughly un-mafia way, but that's my pregrogative right? If I want to roleplay a scrotey, foul mouthed twat, that's fine. That's my right to RP in that fashion. That's my choice to differ from the norm and push the boundaries, give myself a richer playing experience.

Obviously, it's also your pregrogative to act as an outraged mobster who is offended by swearing, but I'm guessing most of the time this isn't that case. I'm guessing most people aren't conciously looking to rp in this fashion, they just see a bit of 'strangenes' and pick up the pitchforks straight away.

Nevertheless, it's your freedom to do whatever you want with this game; but still, where's the consistency? If you want to bash me for making a thoroughly un-mafia like post, then why are you not saying the same to people who organise competitions, run community newspapers, have un-mafia like names. It's all the same.

Of course, it would be ridiculous to that. All of these things brighten up our streets, all of these things are people doing things a little differently, the same as me. You may disagree, but fundamentally it's the same. Vicodin isn't the real name of a mobster, nor would it be the nickname as I'm not sure it was even around in the 30's. Despite that, he's created a lovely concept of The Pharmacy, and bravo to him - he's thinking outside the box and staying consistent.

Here I am, doing essentially the same thing; thinking outside the box and doing something differently, and I'm abused. Why? Because I'm swearing? I can't believe that. On an OOC level, if you can handle a game where the main themes are ilegal, you should be able to handle profanity. Is it because I'm abusing anyone in particular on either an IC or OOC basis? Well, no. I obvously wouldn't insult anyone OOC, and my only ripostes in my speech came after I was called out....Much ado about nothing.

Again, I really can't help rambling here, so I'll stop. Basically, I want to RP a gritty, rough around the edges gangster who slowly progresses into a real mobster; ie, what happens in real life. If you aren't a mature enough player to let me do this and expand on my character's back story, without telling me I'm going against anything the mafia is, and even that (I quote) I'm 'everything bad about this game', then really you need to take a step back and think what this game is all about; simplicity and customisation.

Love ya.

PS. I didn't read this through as I'm cheekily writing from work. Apologies for any repetition, punctuation and spelling errors, or any other idiocy.

Very well said Oasis, very well said indeed.

I applaud your 'thinking outside the box' attitude towards this thing of ours, and wish a few more felt the same. Great speech chief.

While I have to say I love the speech, it hurts a little that it had to be made at all.

I have read and reread the original street speech in question and couldn't find any way for me to find a personal disrespect in there. Some people may not like the style or the format of the speech, but I'm not sure if ANYONE could justify a personal attack in there... if they could, they spotted something I obviously missed.

If people want to roleplay in this manner, what comes next? Shooting everyone with a "PP and I'll shoot" (which I actually don't have any problems with personally)?

Bravo for your attempts at something a little bit different. Major sad face at the fact that so many found it something to start personal attacks in PM over. :/

Aww that was beautifully said & presented!!

& i believe you bring up an extremely valid point - how i wish i could morph into Lola_Bunny again and hop around, stealing wallets and bartering it for a carrot. hahah nah.

But seriously, id like to thank you for bringing this up. Only after these past events have i personally really noticed the reality of the situation your trying to bring into the light. Being one who tends to refrain from posting too much on the streets due to my own self criticism & lack of 'balls', i also tend to rant and manage to not get my message across that easily- i still thoroughly enjoy reading all the roleplays done in the streets. Ive been feeling it has been lacking something, and your spot on - roleplay diversity and exciting individuality.

Everyone should be forced to read this.

This was a great post and an great thing to read. But like Deimne had said its a shame it had to be said in the 1st place. I believe after reading this some people shouting for blood in the streets will be eating their words after they read this.

It was crystal clear that you were role-playing your character, and I encourage you in continuing with that. However, what most seem to fail to see is that no one really said anything about your profanity, at all, I myself even said you can swear if you so wish. And clearly they don't see that you say; This means, when I lace my everyday speech with every cunting expletive known to horse wanking mankind, I don't expect you to preach honour to me. - That was actually your first speech ever, a speech where you came out calling a member of the mafia in general a twat, told the "fannies" to get a grip, and told them to "act" like they're in the mafia. The latter is to me a little hypocritical as you're telling people to act like mafioso but as you said yourself, you want to act un-mafia like, how can you then tell people that they have to act mafia like? No one moaned about the context of the speech, the speech itself was more a bitching session than anything, at people whom you had contact with and didn't like your profanity...but that was in private.

This all came from a conversation you had with one or more people if I'm not mistaken by your last line anyway, because it's clear that it didn't come from a speech that you had made as that speech was your first one. And my point was; Rather than coming out there and aiming your name calling / profanity at a "mafioso" who could be basically anyone, and having people misunderstand the whole point behind the speech itself, you could have made it clearer without aiming anything at anyone, and just used your profanity in a manner that could not have been twisted into something else.

I don't know what you said for people to take offense to the profanity used in your mails, but tell me this, who out here would like to be randomly mailed by someone they don't know, and said person is using profanity in their first contact with you? I'm pretty sure 99% of the players would be saying "What...the...fuck."

I did enjoy the speech as I also, like you, actually enjoy using a little bit (sometimes a lot) of profanity now and then, that's without aiming it at anyone in particular, unless confronted. Your thread here should clear up anything that might have been missed by people who read your street thread, and hopefully my reply also makes those who agreed with you see that some of the things you said could and probably were perceived as something it wasn't meant to.

This was very well said. I enjoy a good roleplay from time to time, adn engaged in the debate in the streets as part of my character - roleplaying the other side of the debate - which I will continue to do because I enjoy the lively discussion.

As for eating my words, waylander? No, not at all. This is OOC. So, my character - over in the streets - will absolutely stand by his words, and will tell Oasis - the character - that his first impression was stupid, and could have been done much better. Clearly, understanding the man behind Oasis from this speech, a very intelligent man. But he's chosen to play a particular character, and therefore my character will continue to interact in the way he has done so thus far.

Though I would say - I agree with those who said this was unnecessary. Don't ever explain. You play your character how you want to play your character. It is your prerogative.

Thanks for posting friends! I will grace you with my presence sometime this weekend; but presently this ne'er do well and general raconteur is finding it difficult to make time for mafie.

I think the main problem you have been facing regards the fact that 98% of people are just idiots. People take things far too personally. I think some individuals should be looking in the mirror, perhaps giving themselves a vigorous shake in the process.

I was unfortunately occupied by business during the exchange that this is referring to, but I'd like to second (or third, or fourth) the notion that if you are playing this game you should expect profanity and violence, as it often goes hand in hand with our business. However, I also think it's important to note that the First Amendment does not apply... if someone more powerful than you is insulted, you might be paying the price.

I have no problem with swearing. It just seems that you were swearing just for the sake of swearing, like 3 times a sentence. Nobody speaks like that it doesnt matter who they are unless they have tourettes. To have someone make a point of putting 'fuck' as much as possible into everything they say just makes it seem like its a 15 year old speaking who has only just discovered the word.

very good read, this gives an insight into the person you are and the person you are trying to create.

Personally, in a game like this, it doesn't matter what type of character you try and portray, you are going to rub at least a few people the wrong way.
