I have been up for several days.

As a lowly earner I cannot afford the big cargo trucks that regularly come into chicago, unmolested by the any of the smug police patrolling the streets often wearing shiny new shoes. Getting paid not to do your job has got to be a good deal. Sometimes I think I am choosing the wrong career path but this is not something one can talk about with ones friends.

Yes, I admit it, I look at these policemen with jealousy

but not so much that I can't see the real winners - the owners of the trucks. They must be shifting a lot of merchandise with little risk. Me on the other hand, I do not own a vehicle of any shape and size. Whenever I go to visit my friends in New Orleans or Vegas I can only go in the suit I stand up in and my travelling bag. If I wish to take anything back it goes in the bag. If I want to take more than will fit I have to put up with much unpleasantness that is not necessary to go into.

For this reason I sleep little and travel much. There are not enough hours in the day for me to take the bus out of the city and then back in again, back and forth. Last week I went all the way to Philly. I have no contacts in Philly, I don't know what I was doing there but I thought "hey whatever. I have some cheap drugs they will love me there!" Unfortunately they were cheaper in Philly. So wasted effort on my part.

Today it is a similar situation. After kicking up to my boss I found I had a hundred and thirty thousand dollars left. A lot of money you might think. No it is not really because I don't really own it - I am an earner and this is earning money. After I stopped by a friend's house (he is not really a friend I believe he is quite psychotic)I found I had 30 000 left. "ha ha!" I thought "maybe it is time to be buying a shiny new car, and a new suit whilst I am at it." (let me tell you something about the ladies quickly - they love it when you put the brylcreem in you're hair and slick it back but unfortunately the effect is ruined if you are wearing a second hand suit that does not fit.)

So anyway I start to ring my long distance friends in the other cities to see if anyone is desperately in need of the merchandise that I recieved from the shady individual who makes me nervous every time I look at him. Unfortunately these calls are useless as nobody picks up or returns them. I am thinking that I am even losing my friends because I have no new suit and because whenever I see them, like today, I have not slept and look a little dirty, much like my friend from earlier. Even with my brylcreemed hair I have to admit that I am looking like a tramp.

Finally I decide to use my last resort. I will have to go to the FBN agent's office. The FBN agent does not care if you walk in looking perked up on caffeine in an ill fitting suit and smelling slightly musty. After all he is the same (Ah once again I am thinking I have chosen the wrong profession.) All the FBN agent wants is the money. My money. At least I will hopefully have enough left over to buy the car.

At his office I am forced to wait in line with the others which upsets me a little. I mean I might look bad but these people are really the lowest of the low. One person asks me for some change, I recoil slightly and make a face. He glowers menacingly but by this time I am not looking at him anymore. If I do not look at him he cannot hurt me.

Finally I am shown in. I will be able to get on the last bus after all. The agent I am talking to looks at me from behind his desk with wide eyes. He has a mustard stain on his shirt and some caked whiteness around his nostrils but also, and this is more disconcerting, around his mouth. Is this toothpaste or some sort of build up of dead skin?

I say hello and ask him if anybody he knows is in need of anything, giving a nod and a wink. It takes a little while from there until the moment when he understands what I am talking about, at one point I am thinking I might be arrested but finally I believe he understands. He tells me of a friend who lives out of town who needs this favor very much. For this tiny titbit of information he asks me for ten thousand dollars. I sigh as I hand over the money. In my head waving goodbye to my new suit.

As I walk past the others in the waiting room keeping my eyes averted from the homeless man in the corner (why is he wanting to speak to the FBN anyway? maybe he believes they are monitoring him) I go over the name of the man I am to meet. Except I cannot recall the name of this man or the city that he lives in. My mind is a blank. I hesitate for a moment before taking my position again at the back of the queue. The bus can wait for tomorrow.

When I am finally shown back into an office I am greeted by a different FBN man with a different mustard stain on his shirt. Like with the crazy man outside I try to avoid looking at his face as I explain my situation. He charges me 15000 to tell me the same name and address I was given an hour ago. I sigh, taking out a pen and paper. He looks at me suspiciously.

-you can't write that down. you'll get me fired.

-well what else am I supposed to do then?

-just remember it.

-but remembering it just cost me 15000. I haven't slept you know, this is difficult for me.

-well your not writing it down in here. At least leave the Federal Bureau of Narcotic's offices before you start writing down the names of drug suppliers. Drugs are the same thing as Narcotics you know.

-don't patronize me buddy.

As I say this I get up, annoyed at this new agent's rudeness. Pushing open the door to the waiting room. 'Fuck You' I say to the homeless guy. I do not like the people here at all.

+ + +

When I wake up a little later my nose hurts a lot. The 5000 dollars I had left in my wallet is gone along with the name and address I was supposed to be holding in my head. I get up, dusting myself off before making my way back to my house, a handkerchied over my face. I think perhaps I will just take my bag and get on a bus to Philly. Hey whatever. I have some cheap drugs they will love me there.
