EddieOHare was walking along a side street in the Bronx when he saw an easy mark. The guy was clearly mob, but nobody important. He could tell this by the slightly ill-fitting suit and the clear wear marks. It was a good suit at one point in its life, but that was clearly many hundreds of wearings ago. The mark was walking rather slowly, and seemed to be a bit tipsy. Not stumbling drunk, but tipsy. Eddie didn’t like trying to roll the really drunk ones; people notice when someone is stumbling into trash cans and making noise. No, Eddie preferred the slightly drunk mark. He was easier to tail without being noticed, but was still drunk enough that most of the time they wouldn’t notice anything had gone missing from their person until it was way too late. The sucker (Eddie had started calling him Rotty in his head due to the rather pungent smell he was giving off) turned down an alley. He obviously knew the area pretty well. Perhaps he lived nearby. Eddie knew he wasn’t part of his own crew; he did the books and knew everyone by name and sight. So this guy might be from New York, but Eddie was sure he wasn’t that well connected yet. Once Rotty was far enough down the alley that people from the street couldn’t see him through the shadows, Eddie made his move. He walked briskly up behind his mark and brushed up against him, lifting his wallet from his person with a practiced and efficient motion. Excuse me, sir. Eddie used a fake voice that was lower than his normal one just in case. He then turned a corner, ducked into another alley, and backtracked his previous path knowing most people would never look at the same place where the crime had happened. Eddie didn’t think Rotty would even notice, but he was always careful. Eddie made his way to his office and checked the wallet. The first thing he noticed was a note taped to the inside. It said: Please don’t take my money. My address is listed on the back. I would prefer if you would just return my wallet please, with all money still inside. Thank you. Sure enough, there was an address on the back of the note! Eddie couldn’t believe the stones this guy had! Did he really think that if someone lifted his wad of cash that they would just give it back if they read the nice note? Wow. Shaking his head, Eddie stashed the $5,000 he found inside the wallet and left his office. He threw the wallet into the river on his way to Brooklyn. The next evening, Eddie came out of a nice, mob friendly restaurant at about 11:30pm. He turned and started walking down the empty sidewalk. All of a sudden, he was hit on the back of the head. Hard. He was knocked out. When he came to, he found a note taped to his forehead. It said: You should have read the note. You are lucky you stashed my money, asshole. |
