Whilst it's never been my business to repeat the words of thos more original than myself, I can't help but notice that a mention of the four pillars would not be amiss. There are those who say that fundamentally, this concept is outdated and inapplicable to the society in which we live. One more than one level, I agree with that. There is one thing, however, that will never be outdated or inapplicabla; that, my friends, is respect. It used to be a given, everyone was granted respect. Fallen foes, no matter what they had done, were afforded a respectful farewell at a funeral, and if that couldn't be afforded for some reason, then nothing would be said at all. Yet today, it's not only disrespect I see at funerals, it's sheer desecration. Tell me, what can one possibly do in a life that deserves spit on one's coffin in front of the eyes of the Lord? Nothing, in my opinion. Were I a leader, I'd be absoloutely ashamed of some of the people wearing my tags. How about another kind of disrespect. I call it "shouting-the-odds-about-all-the-cl's disrespect" For the moment, I won't touch upon the hypocrisy and crass idiocy this often entails just yet. I'll grant that this form of disrespect has always happened, but since when is that a viable excuse? It's always been done in the past so, what the hell, may as well do it now. What happened to learning from our mistakes eh? And rogues...God, it's been beaten to death but since when did you rogue becuase (and I quote) "you know as well as I do that she [Oliver_McTavish] led me on" Boo hoo. You're supposed to be a godamn a mobster, not an emotionally challenged hormonal mess. And that's just one example, none of the rogues in recent memory actually had a valid reason for making what some profess is the ultimate sacrifice. Seems like a good time to tie in something about loyalty too. Roguing specifically against your own Boss? Well, that's just pure scum if y'ask me, doesn't matter what your 'motives' are. |

No need to apologize, you speak truth and common sense, no matter how slurred. Ponders a lawsuit for copyright infringement I don't buy the argument that the four pillars are outdated. Outdated? How can this be? We are trapped in a time warp. We can't seem to get out of the 1930's, so how could anything be outdated? Takes a jump to the left, and then a step to the right Funeral disrespect is a biggie. There's no excuse, and I can't believe my eyes when I see it. It should be an instant death sentence, and usually has been in the past. We are not heathens, after all. Most of us are good Catholics, even if we sin frequently. Business is business, after all. |

Perhaps misplaced would be a better term than outdated. Many feel that in making the transition from the old country to here, it's impossible to take some of our principles with us, that they are not relevant on this side of the pond, as it were. I've never been one for this school of though, the moment we give up omerta, onore, sangue and famiglia is the moment we stop becoming mafiosi and become instead common criminals. The same way as civilisation sets humans from animals, our fundemental beliefs set us apart from the otherwise common hood, at least that's what I've always thought. |

The four pillars are inextricably intertwined in our souls. We live our lives with honour. We leave this life the same way. To call them outdated is in a sense a reflection of a society complacent with chaos. We are better than that. We all aspire to greatness. The Four Pillars are in effect a map showing us how to conduct ourselves in pursuit of our goals. Ours is a tradition of excellence. To settle for a dystopic society when we could achieve so much more is unconciousable. |

While it's true that there's no end to the 30s in sight, let's not forget that it's still a period of tremendous change and adjustment. Not only for us, but for the nation as a whole, now that prohibition has ended. Without bootlegging operations, we've turned to drugs and prostitution -- two things that were forbidden by the old ways. And once you start tugging on that loose thread... This doesn't mean that we would devolve into a frenzied mass of shrieking bandits -- we never evolved past that to begin with. In a business full of covers and facades, Honor is just another front. It's an apology we make to ourselves. We can live with what we do, because we have Honor, but it's extraneous. It isn't real honor. If it was, we wouldn't have to preach it. You either have morals, or you don't. They aren't learned like the multiplication tables. Hopefully, we can move beyond these hangups that have been plaguing us for so long, and learn to truly accept who we are, what we've become. True, the business was founded as a noble society, but we bear hardly any resemblance to that. It's long gone. Personally, I knew and accepted all aspects of the decisions I made. I see no need to apologize. Not to myself, or anyone. |
